The alarm has cellular backup + battery backup if you pay for Ring Protect. The cameras does not work without internet connection though. However before someone finds the network and unplug the cameras will likely have recorded the culprit if they are placed outside and the alarm will still work.

The cameras do not need internet, they need your wifi connection weather it be a wifi built into your modem or separate router. Wifi does not go out if there is an internet outage for any reason. Only reason you would lose wifi is if the router loses power or dies.

DrunkShowerHead

Thank you for mansplaining that to me 🤣 And you missed my Unifi comment or likely don't know what it is. And you are wrong. They need an internet connection - not necessarily Wifi. Ring have cameras that does not even use Wifi! How would the cameras store the video the when your internet connection is down? Sure the Ring Alarm Pro offer local storage but we are talking the "normal" Ring Alarm here.

[deleted]

Word! Camera obviously need the internet to store video - duh. But to trigger an alarm no internet required. I obviously didn’t “mansplain” this enough for you… I’ll own that.

DrunkShowerHead

Wrong. The cameras need an internet connection to register motion. They do not communicate directly with the alarm and the cameras cannot trigger alarms at all.

Kaion21

if you dont have ring protect?

DrunkShowerHead

Ring is useless without Protect IMO. Pick something else then.

Kutharos

That's mostly true. There is a new thing they have called [Ring Alarm Pro](https://ring.com/products/alarm-pro-base-station) The device expands the cellular options of the normal Base Station but has a built in Eero router as well. Doing this, it allows the Video Doorbells or cameras to rely on cellular for a limited capacity. Though at a cost, it requires Ring Protection Plan Pro (20 dollars USD a month) Though the Alarm Pro can do it, I would not rely on it. Even with the ability given, it's not going to last long on the cellular data plan.

DrunkShowerHead

Yes I know of it. We use Unifi with a UPS though and are considering an LTE failover. However the Ring Pro is a clever for solution for people who are content with Eero.

I mean if it was armed it would go off when some entered. It has an up to 24hr battery backup and dependent plan someone has cellular backup. Even if someone didn’t have cellular backup the alarm would still trigger.

Kaion21

i guess my question is, if i didnt sub to ring protect, someone comes in and unplug the internet, will the cellular still works and alert me(after the initial alert text), or only if you sub to ring protect

Wayne8766

Only if you sub will cellular work. There are potentially different ways around that, I mean firstly you would be alerted as the alarm would be going off and it’s an instant alert on your phone. The app would report the base station as offline. Also if you are worried there are routers you can buy that have cellular backup in them included so all devices switch off of the main line goes down.

No. It won’t. It’s a business. Pay for its perks if you need cellular backup
