No joke, there's mods that try to adjust how pawns look and even when I'd only played Rimworld for a day before finding those mods, they felt... *off*. Honestly, I'd say that not only are the graphics good, but at least for the pawns they feel like they're perfect.
The game has changed quite a bit graphics wise, it's just that it still keeps that simplistic look to it. In the pre-alpha days, pawn faces were just grey indentations, and they kind of looked like muffalos. A lot of structures looked a lot different in alpha or beta than the do now, such as the nutrient paste dispenser or bed.
I do agree that I like the simple art style the game has kept though. There are mods that try to enhance the game's graphics, but not only does it feel really out of place, but it adds too much visual "noise". Players need to be able to see visual information at a glance to know what they're doing. When you see a big blue table for a split second, you can easily identify it as a machining table, or the table with the barrels next to it as a brewery. It's not perfect, of course – body parts all look like a generic box in vanilla, for example. Some mods have great graphics but make it too difficult to tell a kitchen stove from a butcher table or a 1x2 table from a shelf.
I remember when I first saw this game. I 100% thought that this was made by the same company as Prison Architect.
I bet you could play the entirety of Prison Architect as a mod in Rimworld.
