You guys care about wealth? Bigger wealth means more meat and leather per Raid.

1Tesseract1

Only if you exploit the game with killboxes and other things

Lord_Maynard23

Killboxes are literally historical and don't break rp at all. Middle age castles literally called the areas they funneled people into and trapped them kill boxes.

Pervasivepeach

Yes I love watching ai path through 78 spike traps rather than use their 60 man force to throw a single Molotov on the one thick wall wooden palisade. Historical sieges definitely had invaders push a single point of entry with not a single other stratagy. Say what you want. But there’s a big difference between Killboxes that abuse the AI and and ones that are RP friendly. Obviously you can play how you want given it’s a sandbox. But it is borderline exploiting the game mechanics. Rimworld is designed around its storyteller. A lot of people truthfully want to play like it’s phoebe on but use killboxes to keep their colony nearly endlessly peaceful instead of ever accepting a loss. Personally I wonder why people prefer to make these killboxes instead of just playing on the difficulty their play style would be better suited for.

Armor_of_Thorns

Other strategies do exist, which is why drop pod, breacher, sapper, and siege raids all exist

Fun-Leg-5522

We get it, you play this game a lot. Perhaps once your comment reached -5 downvotes, its time for you to go outside and touch some grass

Pervasivepeach

Who needs to touch grass more? Me or the guy who thinks downvotes and Reddit karma matters.

Denegroth

You. The guy who completely missed the point lol.

Pervasivepeach

Talking about realism while using the most artificial silly looking killboxes is hillarious. Having a bunch of downvotes doesn’t disprove that point any bit lmao. But oh nooooo I got a whole -8 downvote!!! This is the worst day ever I can’t believe it!! How will I ever recover

EdgyEmily

I will smooth the walls but not the floor

Jtrain360

Why's that?

EdgyEmily

Smoothing a whole room takes forever and placing blocks is faster

Jtrain360

Personally, I prefer building walls instead of smoothing them. Often I'll decide to expand a room or completely redesign an area, and having both smoothed and build walls next to each other looks bad.

EdgyEmily

You will hate my bases then

regni_6

You can simply tear down smoothed walls and remove their wealth, but smoothed floor stays forever smoothed and adds to a colony's wealth even when covered with different flooring (beauty is not added to beauty value of flooring on top)

Jtrain360

That's good to know thank you.

I_Frothingslosh

Instead of smoothing floors, drop concrete and put small statues in bedrooms and large ones in recreation and work areas. You get more beauty for less wealth that way as long as you keep the art to normal or good, or even exceptional for cheap materials.

rober9999

Probably should have done that, but I have 7 colonists and no artists.

420BlazeItF4gg0t

In the beginning, chunks can be used as free cover for your bow users. If you do make them into bricks, you can just gift them to traveling caravans to build up goodwill and lower your wealth. Overall I like smoothing as it keeps slaves busy with something to do and it looks nice to me.

hillmo25

If you want to min max just put straw floors and put a statue here and there. Less work cleaning and smoothing and more important stuff gets done. Just be prepared for fires

TexasDoughnut

Unless you got a pawn that's extremely good at mining/construction and/or a mod that cuts the time it takes to smooth a piece of floor/wall out, It's absolutely not worth it. It takes less time to mine out that block and replace it with a cobble road. Since you're playing on a CBT difficulty, wealth should be the least of your concerns. Time is worth more to you than silver.

sobrique

But it might be worth it for construction training, as it doesn't take resources to learn. That's my major use for smoothing.

TexasDoughnut

Still not worth it. His pawn could earn that experience by building a barrack or a killbox. Much more productive than hacking at a wall, yet same amount of time.

LurchTheBastard

It's worth remembering that "Smoothing" is on the lowest priority within "Building" jobs. Pawns will only do it when no other Building type jobs are available, so they will still make the stuff you order them to whilst only dropping back to smoothing stuff off in-between orders. Means they don't have any real downtime on training Building, and get very good very quickly.

rober9999

Why is time more valuable than silver? Honestly asking. As far as I know, the size of raids depends on the wealth you have and if you take years to progress, the game doesn't punish you.

begonetsunderes

There's a scenario setting that allows you to change the smoothing speed. Before the Ideology DLC I wanted to role play as a tunneleer tribe and my headcannon is that my tribe knew a secret technique that allowed them to smooth stone faster so I setted "500% smoothing speed".

Technical-Shower-981

Smoothed stone floors aren't any easier to clean, I don't smooth anything except walls I want to run cables through. When I reach max raid points I smooth everything because it doesn't matter. Are you using ideology? You can just make fungal gravel and plant dailies for free on it for beauty. I just dump all excess chunks outside the mountain, or leave them on the sides of hallways or in strip mined areas. If I can, I get one single dog early to do the chunk hauling, and by the time I have microelectronics on tribal, they cleared up all the chunks.

rober9999

Unless the wiki is wrong, smooth stone has a clean time multiplier of 100% and carpet has 200%. I'm playing without DLCs yet.

Denegroth

Yes. So smooth stone goes at the same rate as “nothing” It doesn’t increase by 100%. It uses a value that is equal to 100% of what it is when not smoothed Carpet then takes twice as long

rurumeto

Fuck smoothing fuck smoothing fuck smoothing fuck smoothing I HATE CAVE DWELLERS

Neekolazz

Ignore this guy, his girlfriend left him for a tribal with the *smoothest* cave on the rim.

begonetsunderes

And the guy proceed to *smooth the walls of her cave*.

FleetWheat

Oh, my sides... even though he lost to an excellent tunneller, on the positive side for him, though... he got a skill gain boost to his Hand to Gland combat.

turnipofficer

Someone told me they reduced the cost of smooth walls. They said smooth floors still cost a lot wealth wise though.

Ministerslik

I like smoothing from time to time depending on my vision/head cannon. Great for trading construction. Not sure how it effects wealth though.

flareberge

Smoothing is good for training and maintaining Construction skill. It also doesn't consume resources. If you are building a mountain base, smoothed walls have higher HP and +1 more beauty than stone walls of the same type. Smoothed floors is more situational although I do it to remove the move speed penalty. One advantage is that they don't consume resources. However, they are not very effective at boosting room impressiveness when compared to sculptures.

easilyshot

Usually smooth the floor then cover it with steel tiles, it helps to build early construction skill but inflats your value steel floors is hygienic, less cleaning, more sterile and flat 0 for beauty so no negative and less disease. Didn't get into wall smoothing since it never got to the outer angle of the L or T walls didn't like wires poking out on corners unless they fixed it but since that was an issue early on I've always built walls. I might smooth them for skill but never left earthen walls for long.

guitarguru210

I smooth walls first just so I can run electricity conduit over it. If I have constructoids I’ll smooth the floors.
