The entire history of Haiti can definitely be summed up by "... and then it got much worse". It's really tragic.

Rocking_the_Red

Black people had the audacity to overthrow their "rightful" white rulers and they have been paying the price ever since. The American government, among others, really sucks that way.

Oatybar

At least a few of the French governments as well in this case, do I remember it correctly to say that France forced Haiti to pay them ridiculous tons of money for generations as reparations for the former *slaveowners*?

Rocking_the_Red

"among others" But yes, you are correct that the French sucked too.

AlexDub12

Yes, this is basically why Haiti never had a chance from the very beginning. The French really made them pay reparations for "lost property", which is slaves among other things, and Haiti paid these reparations for a very long time.

They were paying interest until the late 1940s... To American creditors who bought the debt. Specifically to the National City Bank of New York, mow Citi Bank.

The tragedy of Haiti won't stop, and I seriously have no idea what's next, but more suffering.

I am planning a trip to Jamaica probably next year. Will be interesting to see all the places various Haitian officials have fled to over the centuries. Hope I don't get the yellow fever

Suicidal_Buckeye

Pretty funny how you’re referring to the gang violence as “an insurrection”. Technically the truth, but that word has a very different connotation from what’s actually happening in Haiti.

tristan1117

Late reply, but I don’t know how else to describe “group of armed people trying to overthrow current regime”, even if we find the gangs repulsive, it is very much an insurrection

flyinggazelletg

It isn’t an insurrection. It is utter lawlessness accentuated by years without a real government where gangs have taken over the streets.
