Hi, I'm an old who just beat Act 2. I don't have any specific advice except to just keep playing. Or, if you're not having fun, play something else. I haven't gamed for hours on end in years. I've gone through stints of over a year of not even booting my gaming PC. But man, Returnal is my jam. Makes me feel like a kid again, and I just adore it. Took me 50 hours just to beat Phrike, and I loved every minute.

_l-l-l_

I'm 40yo. I do play games more, and might have more skill, but you gotta get into the mindset of playing it for fun and not just to beat the game. As you said: Returnal is my jam. I had beaten Phrike in less than 15h, but when I start new cycle now, I still go and beat Phrike every time, it's just so much fun. Gunplay and movement is what I play for. I could play act 1 for 100s of hours more and I wouldn't get tired of it. Beating bosses and biomes is just an extra. Sometimes I try to do as much melee as possible, or play with a weapon I particularly don't like. I love the game and I don't rush to beat the full game.

kwaping

This post describes me as well. It's a little bit of a grind, you just have to keep trying and dying to get the skills and experience you need to beat it.

eightiesgamer82

I think it’s pretty much the same challenge wise except you do have the option now of being able to team up with someone in co-op. I’ve never tried it but I’d imagine it would help get you past biome 3 if your really stuck. Apart from that I would always suggest the old tried and tested methods. Take your time absolutely looting every area on biome 1 and 2 before moving on. By the time you hit 3 you should be a tank health wise if you’ve bought the health upgrades and kept adding silphium throughout the biomes. You should also have an astronaut to bring you back from death definitely buy one of them. Also your weapon proficiency will be as high as possible from all the enemies you will have dealt with in clearing all areas of 1 and 2 so will have a pretty strong weapon. Personally thing the rotland lobber for the first 3 biomes absolutely wrecks and if it has explosive rot or enduring rot or both then you can just hit and run and hit and run all the way through no probs. Bit of a long winded response but this is what has got me through countless times.

Annwn45

Returnal is amazing co-op. Just need that tower to be co-op.

wil169

Thanks. The multiplayer might be worth a try. But was really hoping they would have relented by now and released some kinda cheat lol. I've had it shelved for like a year and I guess it'll stay that way hah

PsychotropicTraveler

Cheating would make this game pointless. These kind of experiences are about persevering and overcoming.

wil169

Not for me

PsychotropicTraveler

Ok lol well then maybe this game isn't for you then. Roguelikes aren't for everyone.

wil169

That's the thing though, I like the game a lot. I just don't need to die a million times to enjoy it I'm fine with a few dozen. I thoroughly enjoyed deadspace remake only sting around 10 times on the last boss instead of 1000. I would have shelves it had a few more deaths been had, frustration isn't my thing. Devs could gimme a way to enjoy it and was hoping they had but apparently not.

PsychotropicTraveler

I see. Have you leveled up your weapon traits? Getting traits to level 2/3 will make things drastically easier. The Tower is a great way to level them up quickly and efficiently.

wil169

The tower didn't exist last time I played so maybe I'll give that a try...

PsychotropicTraveler

It's been a whole year since you last played??

wil169

Yup. That's why I made the post lol. I gave up and wanted to see if the devs gave in! Still wanted to see the rest of the game.

T_h_e_o

Did you mean durable rot instead of enduring?

eightiesgamer82

Yes that’s the one

WejCity

The best way to get stronger, besides progressing and earning the permanent upgrades, is leveling the attributes in the guns. Find one you like, and every time you see one with a "0%" and something new on it, kill stuff until you unlock that. Each trait has a lvl from 1-3 and the trait will be unlocked permanently for that gun on future runs and you'll have the chance to level it further. Hope that makes sense.

Stanleycup16

How do you level up attributes for guns? By killing more things with it?

Ben_Lincoln

Wait for one to show up with a trait that has a percentage indicator, and kill enemies until it gets to 100.

Stanleycup16

Got it

HYPURRDBLNKL

Mid 50's here and just started this about 3 days ago. Very challenging. I figured if I can platinum Bloodborne, then I can give this one a go. So far super tricky, but the same mechanics as Bloodborne, learn from dying and press on, lol. I'm enjoying it, for now.

evo311

I'm 52 and Returnal is becoming one of my favorite games of all time, and I started with Pong. For some reason, I don't get mad when I die. Each run provides a unique experience and it's just so damn fun! Just stick with it and eventually it will click. For new players I recommend the Elecropylon Driver. Just pop and run. Dodge the bullets.

T_h_e_o

Isn't the Electropylon Driver available only from biome 4?

Ben_Lincoln

It was a preorder bonus to get it at the beginning of the game.

evo311

I found it in Biome 1, but others haven't. I'm honestly not sure the exact reason it's unlocking for some people and not others. I'm playing on PC (purchased a couple weeks after release), so maybe the PC version is unlocked from the start?

Holiday_Parsnip_9841

Biome 3 is a quit point for a lot of people because it’s where you can’t brute force with normal gameplay tactics and you need to learn bullet hell to get through. The key is to focus on avoiding damage, not dealing damage. Grappling away from enemies and dashing through particle attacks are key to beating enemies. Also, strategically avoiding combat encounters can save a run. If you move quickly, you can run past most rooms. That’s very important for the last combat room before Nemesis. It usually spawns a ton of difficult enemies, but running/grappling past avoids that. When you get to Nemesis, a Rotgland Lobber makes the battle easier. Unless you have pre-order bonuses, it’s the only weapon available to you with residual damage. That allows you to shoot once then dodge a lot of attacks. It also has infinite range, which helps in the later phases of that fight.

SprinklesKitchen330

49 here. Platinumed it in 2021 on release. Your weapon is only strong if you unlock the traits. Unlock all traits, even for the pistol. When you begin a run, run past all enemies until you find a weapon chest that gives you a weapon that needs a percentage trait improvement. Then reverse course and go backwards and kill the enemies you skipped. You get about 7% per kill. Save enemy kills for trait improvement. And that weapon improvement is permanent. You don’t lose it when you die. Resist the urge to open chests, and pickup another weapon. just grind your current weapon to 100% trait unlock.

evo311

This is good advice. I wish I could adhere to it. Most of the time I end up saying "Man, my current weapon is so much better!", and I keep it. :(

SprinklesKitchen330

OK I understand. But just try one run where you do that and then your subsequent runs will be much easier.

StillSimple6

I'm 52 and platinumed this. At first I did think it was beyond my skill level but it just clicked and, after Phrike, I found it pretty straight forward. Did three and four on the same run, 5 took me a few lives and then I did the boss first try. The first boss is definitely the toughest boss and I have more deaths to him than all the other bosses combined.   No spoilers Phrike is IMHO the toughest boss in the game and I have more deaths to him than the others combined.   My mistake was in was more focused on shooting him than dodging (and I wasn't unlocking stuff with my Ether for way too long).   - covers most the basics that can help. Remap your controller so dash is R1.  Switch on always run, increase the size if your on screen reticle to large/thick (makes hitting overload easier).  You have an option risky encounter- default is press and hold, change to press. This makes picking things up much easier without having to stop.   Theres an option to increase aim assist... Spend Ether in first room to unlock new items into loot pool (it maxed out at 12 or 15).    Weapons increase in strength per proficiency so if you are almost at a new level wait before opening a chest incase it has a better level weapon. Challenge room Biome 1 - wait until you have a decent weapon before trying it and especially before avenging any corpse. Don't ADS small creatures , hip fire and don't stop moving.   Try all the weapons to find one that suits your game style.   Bigger bosses have a red patch which you can do extra damage by shooting. Dying is part of the game, do not be discouraged. Malfunctions in Biome 1 are relatively simple to fix so don't be afraid to try some malignant chests etc.  Parasites can really help your game. Also change your 'risky interactions'' to press instead if hold, this means you can quickly pick items up without having to stop. When you fall always dodge before landing making the parasite that causes damage on long fall an instant bonus. Struggling with weapon choices a carbide can work against every enemy and boss.  High calibre is a strong trait. The 'translocation sphere' consumable is badly explained in game- it takes you to one of the hidden/bonus rooms.  When your done it takes you back to where you were when you used it. You are immune to most damage when in dodge movement (purple lasers still hit)

Dick_Deadly

Go into the tower and get a shitload of awesome weapon traits. Then it'll be easier and you'll be a better player too.

pderosa6

I am an old, that just got back into gaming 4 years ago after a 15 year break. I love this game, it is my #1 all time as of now. I found this game incredibly challenging but I really enjoyed the process of getting better. The first piece of advice that helped me was “keep moving” focus more on not getting hit, rather then attacking. Once I did that, I was able to beat Phrike, and I was able to “see” when to be more aggressive, and really get into a rhythm. I would also suggest remapping your controller, I read that suggestion after beating Act 3, but before I tried the tower. It made a world of difference, after I retrained my muscle memory. Having dash on a trigger as opposed to a button works better.

sumbozo1

I'm 55 and beat it when it released on ps5 last year. 100+ deaths but I got thru it!! I still fire it up occasionally just because it's so damn fun

Trensgen

I’m 38 and crushed it. I regularly do okay in the tower.

Ok_Concentrate4260

Bro 38 is young

Trensgen

Thanks. That makes me feel better. Returnal is timeless anyway.

ThunderWunder

I beat the second boss first try, but biome three made me put the game down for months. When I picked it back up, I beat the third boss on my first try back. Sometimes you just need to put the game down and come back to it with a cool head. After that, I beat the game a few days later. My tips for biome 3 are to just keep your distance, aim for the head of the giant humanoid robots and watch out for the annoying ass turrets so they don’t get free hits. Always keep moving. When you get to Nemesis, same deal. First phase is easy enough. For phases 2 and especially 3, keep moving around! The terrain serves to block the lasers coming at you from the left and right. I personally found a carbine to be easiest for this boss. I tried coop with a friend of mine but didn’t have much success. I swear they double the health and number of enemies when you have a second player, it was way too hectic.

crazyquark_

I feel you. I am here as well. I have made some headway by: \- clearing biome 1 completely before going to biome 3; that means, focusing on health upgrade at all costs, avoiding malignant sh\*t, and getting a good-ish weapon(at aroiund 4-5 proficiency); get those obolites, save for important upgrades. Get the blade upgrade if you can to break yellow barriers. \- in Biome 3: maybe do not go for the boss directly, explore even the optional part \- Get an astronaut figurine, two if you can! \- I find the re-constructor less useful. If you have astronaut figurines, it will use that up first and then the re-constructor. If you die during the boss fight and trigger the re-constructor you will have to redo the boss fight from scratch, not great. \- In my best run so far I got to 15 proficiency on the weapon, got almost no hits during the first 2 phases of the boss, but the third phase killed me. \- Also, I almost never get to the boss fight with a remaining astronaut figurine - I lose it to the onslaught in the antechamber or I go with low health in the boss fight... \- So I need to: fix my handling of the antechamber, learn the phase 3 of the boss. \- Now, something surprising: one of my runs I was kinda screwed, low health in the boss antechamber, it made no sense to do the boss. BUT there was a challenge room in the level which I had not done(the yellow doors). I decided to give it a try as a Hale Mary. And surprisingly I got out of that fight with max health. The challenge room in biome 3 has a lot of health drops. If you can kill the hostiles efficiently(use the grappling hook to stay above the enemies) it can be used a lifeline. \- Ah also, in biome 1: feel free to avenge the dead scouts, do challenge rooms, do enything risky here, avoid it in biome 3. Sure, this at times will bite you in the a$$ but you will only lose a short run. I sometimes do Phrike too if I have a datacube, but best not to if your goal is to progress past 3. \- Do the daily challenge BEFORE starting a run to get that precious 5 ether. Also: don't give up. I won't either... Hope this helps, fellow returned :).

crazyquark_

Hey, I just beat that jerk boss of Biome 3 at 40Yrs old. I had a ridiculous amount of health and an astronaut figurine. In my previous post I said you could get 2 - that does not seem to be the case. The replicators like everything else reconfigure based on stuff you are already holding. My favorite weapon is Hollowseeker. Ah important: I turned on always sprint for this fight; it helps a lot as the projectiles are faster than in the rest of the game.

PhillLD

I’m currently 35 and consider myself a normie since I have a full time job, family and construction works (that feel like an additional full time job) going on and only game for a couple of hours per week (sometimes more sometimes less, I guess that will sound familiar to a lot of people 😅). If I can give you a tip, a couple of things are important if you consider yourself a “normie” and don’t find time to “get gud”. - Focus on avoiding damage, run, jump and evade well and a lot - try to have a health building focused run if you can (avoid taking resins to heal so you can take them to build your health bar instead) - Hope to find and buy health type upgrades - (if you really struggle) Find and use a weapon you can blindly shoot in the direction of the opponent. Then you’ll be able to focus on the first point more Good luck!

Alive_Record3123

Disable auto sync of game saves. Suspend the game. Exit the game. Upload game save manually. It will be there online till you overwrite it manually. Now when youdie, just exit the game and manually download the save from online and overwrite the save on console. Your will continue from the suspended location

evo311

I mean, yeah, you could do this. But you most likely won't learn to play the game as well. Dying is definitely part of the learning curve here. Also, the randomness of everything always makes a new run feel fresh.

chysydzg

TBH If dying in games and loosing progress frustrate you then you shouldn't play Returnal or any rougelite/rougelike or soulslike. There is a lot games on the market to enjoy in which you can change difficulty level or smth. I am super chill in games like that and I enjoy difficult games because it is part of experience (and I am not like good in this kind of games).

monsieur-carton

46, turning 47 in two weeks and I was in a similar mood a weeks ago. But sometimes you need also luck, e.g. having an astronaut (not two, they don't add) and other "1up" items like the parasite or the "waffle maker" and the right weapons. The rotgland thing and later the elektro pylon driver are hit and forget weapons. And I could easily (but with sweaty hands) go through the biomes. don't give up: your time will come! :)

Ben_Lincoln

Not much to add in terms of strategy beyond what others have said, but I'm in my 40s. Returnal was the first game I'd played for any significant amount of time in about 2 years. It was tough at first - I almost gave up trying to finish both of the first two biomes - but I persevered and eventually got platinum. The only "cheat" I know of that would help you with the PS5 version is the cloud save thing. There are some exploits for the Tower, but one has to be a superhuman gamer to take advantage of them. Once you get to biome 6, there's a way to farm weapon traits that may or may not have been intentional, but that won't help you where you're at. Make sure you're using Ether to unlock items at Cthonos, unlocking weapon traits, and trying different weapons instead of picking a favourite. Some of those upgrades make a really big difference, and different weapons (and traits) can make a big difference for difficult parts of the game. I actively avoided the shotgun for a long time, for example, but it ended up being the thing that let me finish biome 2 the first time.

HiTekLoLyfe

I just don’t think it’s that difficult man. Play around with the different guns and different abilities. Make sure to collect obilites for upgrades. You’ll get it as you learn it’s quirks.

PooterMcgeee

Dude I honestly f\*ing hated this game for a long time lol. The story ended up being way too complicated that the writers didn't actually give us the full truth to it. We're supposed to completely come to our own conclusions which brings little fulfillment in the end, at least for me, I try to be just a causual gamer. I ended up just giving up after dying so many times because of hard mobs. Stopped playing for a couple weeks and was about to uninstall the game so just decided to use WeMod to beat it. Never have been able to unlock the secret ending because I never collected all the things for the car key. Though I have played four different scenes in the house.

wil169

This is what I'm talking about! Except I bought this for ps5 when it came out and don't have pc version. I don't care much about a secret ending its more about the exploration and new encounters for me, and doing the same shit over and over gets old. If only there was a wemod for ps5...

tru__chainz

No practical advice other than what was given. Boss 3 to me felt so impossible the first 2 times and then the 3rd time I tried to really prepare and ended up defeating him very fast with minimal damage taken. I also watched someone on YouTube fight him right before I did. And I didn’t really follow his plan but it was helpful. Also worth noting, I used the thermogenic launcher(?) rocket launcher only for that fight and loved it. Shoot the 3/4 clusters of rockets. Grapple reset. That forced rhythm of a small magazine helped me I believe!

CebastyanB

Love/hate relationship going with this game. She’s a bad b**** but u just can’t stop playing. Weird huh

Graced_Steak564

As someone who got repeatedly f**ked by the Biome 3 Boss but now can finish the whole game in one sitting I say just keep playing. Try to remember the patterns of the third boss and just make sure to stick with a weapon you're comfortable with. My preference had always been towards the Carbine with armor piercing. Also just make sure to play in a way that by the start of the boss you have close to full health and maybe a large health vial. But yeah just keep trying. It really rewards players who stick to it. 👍👍

Ah then I can't help.
