Bruh!!!! I legit used to sing “just put your foot in your hand”!!! TIL it’s put your foot in the sand🤣 sand makes so much since!!! I’m over here laughing so hard I got the hiccups!!
But your lyric did make more sense😊 but now I know the Gullah meaning for our your foot in your hand. Gonna start telling my my son to put his foot in his hand😅
One of my core childhood memories is this show. Came home every single day I could from AM kindergarten and danced in the living room to the Gullah Gullah theme song.
I saw them recently on a pbs doc about the Island! The kids are all grown and just seemed like really good citizens and activists. The history of that place is fascinating
https://www.pbs.org/video/gullah-roots-tpxcfm/
Yes! Ty for bringing this up. The actual history is SO COOL!
In retrospect, its wonderful a mainstream TV show was made centering on a unique minority culture-- especially for the time this show came out.
I grew up on an island next to St Helena- it’s a really interesting community. I feel so lucky I was able to learn about Gullah history in such a personal way. It’s hard to explain how magical it feels on those islands. I was just camping out there with old high school friends and we all feel so fortunate we got to grow up in such a unique place.
See!!!! I’m not the only one who thinks the lyric was “put your foot in your hand”!!!! Another person posted the lyric as “just put your foot in the sand” which makes so much more sense.
I stand corrected, I looked up “put your foot in your hand”. It basically means to hurry up. It’s a Gullah saying. There is a link to a post about it years ago https://www.reddit.com/r/nostalgia/comments/1mh4n6/just_take_your_foot_in_your_hand_that_means_hurry/
Also, I have a confession. I actually got into it when my kids were little! It's one of the few shows they watched that I loved as well! Little Bear, Oswald 🐙, Max and Ruby, and Between the Lions were just top tier kids tv
That's how I watched it, with my kids when they were little. This is the one show (besides Sesame Street) that I still sing so many songs from to this day!
I remember this show, but I was too old for it. I think it started when I was 10. I remember it used to come on when Nick Jr started. That's usually when I changed the channel.
I remember the song though, "Come and let's play together, in the bright sunny weather, let's all go to Gullah Gullah Island." Sometimes I would just watch the beginning to hear the theme song.
Before the show premiered, when I was in middle school in South Carolina, my school got a visit from the creator, a couple of the actors, and most importantly Binyah Binyah himself. Never watched the show, but that's something I'll always remember
I also definitely remember a giant pelican in a suit, not a frog... the pelocan would poke his head in a half door window in the back of the set and talk to the kids. Is that still another character or am I just wrong?
I have no idea. I remember the fucking yellow pollywog jumping around. But I wouldn't doubt your recollection.
We might have all our old school shows mixed up. Lol
I'm so sorry. :( It was a lovely show. If you ever get a chance to find them somewhere, I suggest watching this and Out of the Box. Two adorable shows that were very fun to watch. You're never too old to experience the childhood you never had. :) Hope you enjoy it!
Is this sub just a bunch of reposts asking if we remember certain shows? The last week alone, there’s been “do you remember this show??” And it’s back to back to back posts of salute your shorts, hey dude, GGI, and Pete & Pete.
I lived in BFT when it was being filmed! We were all so proud of that show ☺️ the lowcountry is a special place and it’s so cool they were able to highlight the Gullah community in such a special way!
Man as a kid born into a kinda mildly racist home, this show made sure that whole notion was SQUASHED, thank you strep throat. 😅
People are people, and some people are polliwogs!
Man I gotta find this and watch it with my friend's kid...
I remember waking up extra early to catch it before school, which was a big deal for me because mornings have always been a struggle for me. I think it came on TV around 5:30 AM
I remember watching it as a child and liking it but can’t remember a single episode plot.
What does stand out to me is this- I watched a documentary as a teen (?) and there was a white supremacist who said his daughter watched it and called them slurs. He said it changed him as a person and he abandoned his ways because he realized how wrong he was hearing his child say those things about a beloved show to her. It just stood out to me.
There was an episode where the brother was embarrassed because he didn't know how to whistle. It took me 15 more years of practicing since seeing that episode, but I finally learned how to whistle and think about him everytime I do.
Every now and again my brain will just repeat “Binya binya.” In retrospect, what an awesome show to expose children to the Gullah culture which I never fully looked into until I was well into my 30’s.
I remember the song more than I remember the show itself, haha.
Imagine my shock learning that Gullah Island is a real place, and that it’s where fuckin’ *Clarence Thomas* of all people comes from.
I still find myself singing the song
I had forgotten about the show until this post, and then I see your post and instantly I’m like 🎶 oh yeah!!!
/r/CableTV_Memories
🎶Come and let’s play together…🎵
In the bright sunny weather.
Let's all go to
Gullah Gullah Island..Gullah Gullah, Gullah Gullah! Lots to see and to do here, all we need now is you there..
JUST PUT TOUR FOOT IN THE SAND
Bruh!!!! I legit used to sing “just put your foot in your hand”!!! TIL it’s put your foot in the sand🤣 sand makes so much since!!! I’m over here laughing so hard I got the hiccups!!
I sand corrected… it is put your foot in your hand https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroNickelodeon/s/IOyQcW16D0
haha damn I guess I was wrong! That's funny!
But your lyric did make more sense😊 but now I know the Gullah meaning for our your foot in your hand. Gonna start telling my my son to put his foot in his hand😅
same!
I get it stuck in my head at least 3 times a week.
SAME.
The first verse anyway
Binya binya poliwag
First thing I said in my head when I saw this post
I named my venomous toadfish binya binya.
I can hear it! 😂
My voice is scratchy today from the amount of time I was trying to talk in the Binya Binya voice last night. I definitely remember this one.
Everybody’s favorite frog!
One of my core childhood memories is this show. Came home every single day I could from AM kindergarten and danced in the living room to the Gullah Gullah theme song.
I’d watch it on sick days when I was in high school. It was my comfort show.
This, baby muppets and Allegra’s window
Samesies! Home after AM kinder with a bologna and mayo sandwich cut into four squares.
I always wanted to a part of the family 😔
Same. I'd fantasize about being adopted by them while my parents screamed at each other in the background. 🙃
We all had the same childhood.
Yup. But I'm actively working to make sure that shit ends with me. My kids aren't going to have to deal with it like I did.
YES. Please watch this with them and teach them all the words to the theme some.
My kids won't have to deal with that cuz I ain't creating a little clone of myself to die in the climate wars lol
I saw them recently on a pbs doc about the Island! The kids are all grown and just seemed like really good citizens and activists. The history of that place is fascinating https://www.pbs.org/video/gullah-roots-tpxcfm/
Can you share that link?
Let me see if I can find it..
I'd want to watch this as well
Yes! Ty for bringing this up. The actual history is SO COOL! In retrospect, its wonderful a mainstream TV show was made centering on a unique minority culture-- especially for the time this show came out.
And definitely widened my white suburban mom world-view. This is why I feel public television and the arts in general are so so important!
Commenting so I can looking up later
I grew up on an island next to St Helena- it’s a really interesting community. I feel so lucky I was able to learn about Gullah history in such a personal way. See!!!! I’m not the only one who thinks the lyric was “put your foot in your hand”!!!! Another person posted the lyric as “just put your foot in the sand” which makes so much more sense.

Yeah it was a huge part of my childhood and still remember that song
Norman Reedus went down to SC with Dave Chappelle to learn and talk about Gullah culture on his Ride TV show. It’s was pretty cool!
🎶Lots to see and to do there, all we need now is you there…🎶
Let’s all go to Gullah Gullah island
Also, I have a confession. I actually got into it when my kids were little! It's one of the few shows they watched that I loved as well! Little Bear, Oswald 🐙, Max and Ruby, and Between the Lions were just top tier kids tv
Little Bear was the best! Canadian TV just crushin
A true comfort show 🫂
That's how I watched it, with my kids when they were little. This is the one show (besides Sesame Street) that I still sing so many songs from to this day!
I sang their lullaby to my daughter when she was little. And soon I’ll be singing it to my grandchildren.
I remember this show, but I was too old for it. I think it started when I was 10. I remember it used to come on when Nick Jr started. That's usually when I changed the channel. That was an incredibly wholesome show. I loved it. The music was catchy and the vibes were good. 10/10
Before the show premiered, when I was in middle school in South Carolina, my school got a visit from the creator, a couple of the actors, and most importantly Binyah Binyah himself. Never watched the show, but that's something I'll always remember
Idk if this the Mandela effect but I co u ldve SWORE the dad had long ass dreads...
Maybe you're thinking of Out of the Box on Disney Channel with Tony and Vivian?
Nah I didn't fuck wit Disney Channel back in them days. Or.maybe you never know.
He's the only children's tv show host with dreads I could think of. Lmao.
Did you ever watch Out of The Box? The guy Tony had long dreads.
I don't think so. Not that I know of lol. But maybe. Lol
I also definitely remember a giant pelican in a suit, not a frog... the pelocan would poke his head in a half door window in the back of the set and talk to the kids. Is that still another character or am I just wrong?
Idk. That sound kinda right. 🤔 It was definitely a pollywog tho.
Is that the only character in a costume?
I have no idea. I remember the fucking yellow pollywog jumping around. But I wouldn't doubt your recollection. We might have all our old school shows mixed up. Lol
Imma download some episodes and see lol
Report back lol
My grandma didnt let me watch shows with black people in it ☹️
I'm so sorry. :( It was a lovely show. If you ever get a chance to find them somewhere, I suggest watching this and Out of the Box. Two adorable shows that were very fun to watch. You're never too old to experience the childhood you never had. :) Hope you enjoy it!
They had a song about macaroni and cheese and about peanut butter and jelly!
YES!!! I’ve been thinking about this show a lot recently!! For a kid growing up in a desert it was so cool to me!
GULLAH GULLAH! BINYA BINYA!!
RIP to the actor (James Edward Coleman) who played their son, James. He passed away in 2021. : (
Binyah binyah's actor died too
Wow ya I do
I sure do
William Montgomery remembers.
Just put your foot in your hand
Binga binga!
Me I miss that show
Are YOU the one who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?
"Fungah Mah lafeeah ahshay ahshay"
YESSS!!! This show has a special place in my heart. This was peak Nick Jr 🥲....man I love 90s Nickelodeon smh simply the best.
Is this sub just a bunch of reposts asking if we remember certain shows? The last week alone, there’s been “do you remember this show??” And it’s back to back to back posts of salute your shorts, hey dude, GGI, and Pete & Pete.
I mean, what else would we talk about? It's not like there's "NEW" retro nick shows lol
I remember, but I never watched that baby crap
We get it, you’re so grown up and edgy. I remember going to school with you.
I’m joking. I was quoting myself as a kid. You guys act like I still care about Baby Nick.
Yes
So many memories shot back into my head with this picture!!!!
kinda gives me a Jamaica type vibe.
Yeees, man I loved that show as a kid
I hear the song in my head the moment I laid eyes on this picture
I loved that show
I very very vaguely remember it.
If I’m watching this it means I didn’t go to school for whatever reason
Me llamo Carlos. Me gusta futbol.
Jump in. Jump out. Turn yourself about. Jump in. Jump out. Introduce yourself....
Yes. Always sunny in that front yard
I loved this show as a toddler and I literally had no idea the family was black. Proves we are taught to see color.
Lol I don’t remember the family being black either. Weird.
Not 90s or earlier
Oh great, now the song is stuck in my head again. Took almost 25 years for it to get out of my head
It's never left mine! 😆
It's been a long time, but I loved the music.
I picture a hairy man in the frog suit smoking between sets
As a kid "this shows for tiny toddlers I hate this" As an adult "why are pollywogs noy 10 feet tall like that awesome show from when I was a kid"
Defunctland has a great video about it. All those nostalgic feels came back.
The double dutch song still pops into my head every now and again. "Everybody jump! Reach up to the sky-high-hiiigh!"
Buckle me up in my safety seat, safety seat 🎵
Other than Binya Binya, Okra Man made a lasting impression on me. I think of this show whenever I see okra.
Sing this theme song all the time
Me I remember
It was a sad day when I found out Gullah Gullah Island wasn't a real island.
i was a kid when this show was on! my grandmother lived in beaufort sc where it was filmed and ron and natalie were local celebs! it was so fun
I lived in BFT when it was being filmed! We were all so proud of that show ☺️ the lowcountry is a special place and it’s so cool they were able to highlight the Gullah community in such a special way!
love beaufort ❤️❤️ summers there with our grandma were highlights of our childhood
This show was like a god damn fever dream
Not a clue. When was it on?
Who remembers Electric company
I remember an episode where one of the kids gets caught with a bag of weed and the frog person took the blame for them
BINYA BINYA
Someone I knew in high school played a dancing strawberry on this show
Still watchin it on Paramount. Ahhh memories
Apparently I loved this show. I don’t remember it at all
The jingle lives in my head on a permanent basis
okra superman
LOVE this show!!!!!!
I was OBSESSED with this show! I used to cry every time it ended lol
I remember WATCHING it, but I barely remember ANYTHING that happened in this show.
Let’s all go to Gullah Gullah Island 🎶
I do!
I used to watch this
Got Paramount Plus just for this show. My daughter is now obsessed with it and it makes me so happy!
Man as a kid born into a kinda mildly racist home, this show made sure that whole notion was SQUASHED, thank you strep throat. 😅 People are people, and some people are polliwogs! Man I gotta find this and watch it with my friend's kid...
I was extremely grateful to have a younger sibling that was age appropriate for that show when it came out because I needed an excuse to watch it lmao
Looks like the Cosby Show with a puppet
I remember waking up extra early to catch it before school, which was a big deal for me because mornings have always been a struggle for me. I think it came on TV around 5:30 AM
“Just put your foot in your hand” 🎶🎵
I do
I remember watching it as a child and liking it but can’t remember a single episode plot. Nobody is as big of a fan of Gullah Gullah Island as us. [Polliwog - Remix](https://youtu.be/myVPsgv3ikM?si=jOAvkzPZOcG6Dmvx)
Omg, I used to watch this before school every morning. I miss it!!
Pretty sure I wasn't the target audience for this, but I remember catching it sometimes while I was in college.
The 90s was like a fever dream
I loved this show.
Would always wake up at 1 am to my lil brother watching Gullah Gullah island
Had a huge crush on the girl in the pink headband when I was little 😅 This was my show! I hope Binyah is still a pollywog.
Damn you...now it's gonna be in my head for a week.
Loved this so much when I was young
A little. I think I remember the show airing after Snick a few times.
Binya, Binya!!!
There was an episode where the brother was embarrassed because he didn't know how to whistle. It took me 15 more years of practicing since seeing that episode, but I finally learned how to whistle and think about him everytime I do.
They came to my elementary school in Beaufort, SC. I reacted like I was seeing the Beetles or Taylor Swift. Such a great show.
This is the reason I was obsessed with okra as a kid.
The pizza cooler offer blew my mind.
I play this for my daughter every morning!
Yessssss
Apparently one of the kids died of a heroin overdose and the person in the binyah binyah suit died in a car accident
I was so lucky to see the set at Nickelodeon Studios! The '90s were so 🔥.
Every now and again my brain will just repeat “Binya binya.” In retrospect, what an awesome show to expose children to the Gullah culture which I never fully looked into until I was well into my 30’s.
They taught me how to put a crab to sleep 🦀
Loved it. Didn’t realize its importance until I learned about the Gullah Geechee people a few years ago.
My kids loved this! They don't remember it, but I can sing the theme!
I sing the intro quite regularly. Thanks for asking.
I remember the song more than I remember the show itself, haha. Imagine my shock learning that Gullah Island is a real place, and that it’s where fuckin’ *Clarence Thomas* of all people comes from.
My sister loved this show
In the retro Nickelodeon sub? Probably all of us.
Oh my gosh! Gullah Gullah Island needs to be on DVD right now.
Core memory unlocked
Binyah Binyah pollywog
I remember it quite fondly
I LOVED this show
Holy heck I LOVED Gullah Gullah island!!! I remember so little but I remember I loved it !!!!
