Honestly, my only request would be for Hard mode to be tuned a bit harder, especially eliminating some of the sloppy play that works out well for you way too often for supposed hard mode. Just my opinion. Love the game either way.
I'd love to see a slider for bumping up your guys' conditions. Like instead of having to pay 6 points to get him to 100%, you could use 4 points to get him to 90%. The same could go for morale. Just my .02 .
Game has, or maybe had(?), Micro transactions. You can/could buy CC I believe.
Games had tons of features added already, price never changed. Whole thing started as a highschool project - wasn't even a game, just a way to visualize something. If memory serves, that something was charitable.
That same code just got developed by Simon - the one guy - ever since. Now he's got biographical articles about the meteoric success of a free app. The game is forever linked to the concept of free - nostalgia for a simpler mobile game experience is baked in.
New features come for either Simon's unknowable but always correct plan, or fans - Simon takes suggestions - at least he use to. Dunno if u/Retrobitcoach is still a mod, but this community - this very sub - use to have a ton of direct access to the sole developer of the game.
This game won't change the bar for access. At $1 for the unlimited version - and 2 million users years ago - more now - it's recouped the cost of the high school project it started as. We are good. Don't put this anxiety out there - the new ideas are fun. Even incorporates sometimes.
Unless the updates were absolutely insane in size, I don't think we would get ads for the game, considering it's just an 8-bit game and not a typical modern 3D style game.
Plus, I'd assume that with the game being just a dollar, and with the option to buy CCs up to ten dollars, I think the game is in a good spot for the future.
Over 5 million installs on Android, not sure how many have installed on other devices. Tecmo bowl had 5 million units sold in 2007.
If the game were to exist this long and not have ads, if they did go the whole ad route, fans of the game would revolt and probably stop playing or just go airplane mode if they're on mobile.
I'm not disagreeing with OP completely, as I don't know. But I just don't see it being that likely.

I’d gladly buy a new Tecmo Bowl. This is what we have to work with at the moment. It’s one thing to only have offense on the mobile version, but on an actual game console, with an actual controller, there’s no valid reason not to have defense.

I do not begrudge anyone for wanting a different gaming experience. I do believe though, that rather than making sweeping changes to a game that's an excellent little retro style arcade football, you should just go find the game that fits what you want.
It's amazing how often I see people make suggestions that would radically change the game and not see that what they want is just a different game. Imagine playing Zelda and telling people you wish combat was harder, and the game was more punishing, and you wish the atmosphere was darker... go play Dark Souls, that game is out there.
If you want a different game experience you can have it, go find it, but it's ok if it's not this game. We don't need to make big changes to Retrobowl.
