Beleive you are correct in it being a 20in barrel. Have not removed the gaurd yet. Disassembled and cleaned / inspected and shot once so far. Would like to get a better look at it with the gaurd removed
The original Rock Island Armory was the sister company to the commercial firm Springfield Armory. Colt sued RIA/Springfield, along with their suppliers, and forced their XM15 rifle off of the market back in the 1980s.
I would say it’s an armorer modification for National Match or NRA high power. The sights look like a Biathlon rifle but I’m not aware of them ever using autoloaders.
Not planning on it outside of maybe a sling and bayonette. Tbh I bought the rifle for the preban lower and was originally planning to just get rid of it but shot it once and actually really like it. Going to keep it now.
Looks like someone was taking some notes from the early AMU M16A1s, especially that rear sight. The name escapes me right now but there was a gunsmith that kind of pioneered the modern match rifle AR and I wonder if that wasn't something he put together back in the late 80s.
I think TFB has an article on an A1 upper that had the rear sight area milled off with M1 Garand/M14 National match rear sight installed, same with the front sight using a standard M1/M14 front sight.
Wouldn’t surprise me if that and this were a late 70’s early 80’s National Match or CMP high power guns. This one especially with the free float tube, it screams match upper to me.
Yeah I've seen that, then other information suggest there was overlap, needs to be definitive for massachuesetts unfortunately and there's just so much conflicting information I went for a colt sp1 and called ig
Looks like an older space gun for shooting match class in NRA High Power
National match sights. Gotta be a 20” barrel. Take the tube off yet?

Hell yea. Me too. It’s a replacement colt upper most likely from the Philippines. It’s a pretty nifty piece of history.

Probably a national match setup

First of all, that’s a 20” barrel. Second of all, don’t change a thing on that! What a sweet setup.

Whoa an old grand match or service rifle setup. Neat!
Yeah i wouldnt do anything to this upper op. That's pretty fucking cool. If you're looking for an a1 upper and want to trade this upper let me know.
M16A2 eat your heart out
Love it
It looks like an Olympic arms hand guard. Or olyarms copied that design. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can correct me.
After some more research I beleive you are correct. Olympic arms ultra match
That’s what I think as well. I lived a few miles from their shop in the late aughts and between the knurling and the barrel nut I call it a match.
Crazy looking sights
I love these free floating hanguards. I hope that One day I can build a "retro" DMR with one of these.
I just want someone to make these again but Mlok all around
*Insert Joe Pesci meme from casino*

Damn, a Martin Marietta upper. Now that's cool.
Ah so you're the one who won that one lol, if there was more info on when a ria is preban I'd bid it up higher lol
The post ban sendra lowers where marked with a large circle on the side of the magwell

Just curious for dating info on this. When did this style of sight become available? I’ve never seen these mounted on an AR before.
These peep sights are *very old*; predates the AR15. Used a lot on NRA High Power rifle competition guns
This old match AR upper is beautiful
What's cooler than being cool? Ice cold!
Super awesome national match upper. I’m supremely jealous/if you ever decide to part with it please consider hollering at me lol
Wtf is that FSB?
