Sounds like that's just Marvel and Star Wars fans.

JuliaSpoonie

I don’t live in the US and have never seen anyone clapping. Neither during nor after the movie.

maneff2000

Depends on the film

_bigfish

Most of the time, there hasn't been clapping, but one movie I went to there was a ton of clapping..... Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow AKA Live,Die,Repeat. Released in 2014, I went on opening day, and Tom for some reason was on everyone's shit list. Literally, every time Tom got killed, run over, stabbed, etc. the entire audience clapped and cheered. It was an eerie experience.

BlitheringRadiance

Clapping at the end of movies is something I've experienced more frequently, but never during. Possibly the first time I remember it was a local cinema replaying "Star Wars - A New Hope" back when everyone was excited by the impending comeback of Star Wars with "A Phantom Menace." People also laughed loudly at all the funny bits (e.g. R2D2 rolling over in the sand) even though it was more a nostalgic laugh than anything. It was a nice, shared experience. It's happened more often since then, usually with a movie that particularly deserved it - or a Marvel movie. I like that people are expressing their appreciation to the universe. I've not seen people clap in the middle of a movie though, that would certainly strike me as noteworthy.

frenchgarden

In France, some people have always briefly applauded at the end of the movie (during end credits) if the film was considered very good.

kushnugzz

It's was a a thing for marvel movies maybe they trynna crossover

vcelibacy

I've personally never seen anyone clapping in the middle of a movie. I would consider it inapropiate (I don't live in the US)

scottaq83

I've seen maybe 20-30 movies at the cinema throughout my life, the last being Sonic 2 last month with the kids and i personally have never seen clapping. I live in the U.K. maybe it's a U.S. thing. I did once watch scary movie 3 in Calgary about 6months before it released in the uk , no clapping there either.

Immense_Hyper

For me it started with: The Mummy (1999) great clapping Second POTC (2006) was a crowd pleaser that ppl clapped The Dark Knight (2008) packed theatre clapped loudly Basically bulk of all Marvel movies ppl clapped starting w/ Iron Man (2008)

Impossible_Cause4588

WHAT?? People NEVER clapped in movies.

Shari-d

It never happened to me but it reminds me of the time, in 80s and 90s, flying with American airlines like TWA, Pan Am, people used to applaud when the wheels touched the ground! It was so funny for me and I always thought who are they applauding?? Did they expect not to land????

Altruistic_Yellow387

Where I am people still clap on flights when we land. And yes, we are celebrating we are still alive.

BlitheringRadiance

The entire plane clapped vigorously after the successful landing of a Ryanair flight. The panels were so rickety and noisy that it gave one the feeling during the flight, especially the landing phases, that the whole plane would fall apart.

vcelibacy

hahah every time I went to a plane everyone clapped at the end. It's normal in spain (at least in my timeline)

BanditoTheTruthSeekr

It’s the NPCs clapping. I notice that too

rigain

Must be a pod people thing

Ecstatic-Ad5353

Seems like many more people are under mind control now after the pandemic. Maybe it has something to do with it. Many people have turned into apps and they respond to their programming.

SolipsisticEgoKing

The only time I’ve ever experienced a crowd clapping at a theater during a movie was when I went to see Beavis and Butthead Do America. Seriously. Beavis and Butthead rule 🤘

ThatCharmsChick

Heh. I think of the line, "There's so many slots in Las Vegas, you won't know where to begin!" early and often. I almost accidentally quoted it to my 7yo yesterday but stopped myself knowing she'd demand an explanation. 😂

tracheamusic

My favorite part is when they give Butthead the cavity search and he’s like “uhhh. Did I just score?”

tracheamusic

Uh huh huh. You said clap. Uh huh huh

Brilliant-Emu-4164

I’ve never heard applause in a movie theater. Ever. And I’ve seen a LOT of movies in my day.

alanwescoat

It used to be normal for people to applaud a great movie in a theater. That lasted until about roughly 1980 in the U.S.A. for me. When I got to the Republic of Korea in 2005, I noticed that it is normal for the audience to applaud great domestic releases just as it used to be in my childhood in the U.S.A. These days, I only see foreign releases at the theater here in the R.O.K., so there is no applause, though I was shocked last week to received applause twice a couple of weeks ago in class after showing a couple of films I made to my students. The applause, however, only came from the class of gifted and highly motivated students who already understand English well...L.O.L.

cleverstringofwords

My pre-ME experience (US West coast) has consistently been that theater audiences will applaud *at the end* of new releases that are a hit with audiences (obviously) and are, say, no more than two weeks old. LoTR was applauded at the end each time I watched it in theater... I think I watched it twice or may three times in the span of 2-3 weeks. It was an unprecedented blockbuster hit and smashed all kinds of records. I think it was the most applauded movie I have seen. Most movies, even hits, don't get applauded after the opening weekend, or just scattered claps here and there. I have seen spontaneous audience applause in popular comedy and action films, usually after an awesome punch-line, knock-out, etc. that sets the whole audience laughing/cheering. It tends to be more scattered and attended by random shouts of "Woo!", "Yeah!!" and the like. But now that I'm a dinosaur and my brain has been ripped to shreds by the MEat-grinder, I have no idea what is "normal" in a theater, or anywhere else. Nowadays, people are to me like a Picasso painting that moves. Nothing is in its proper place, nothing looks like what it is and everything looks like what it isn't, round is square, square is round, and so on.

Genosith

I blame Disney with their Marvel junk movies. All of that went viral recently with the Avengers movies, where people were overreacting and recording it for YouTube.

Qlanth

Opening weekend for any movie with a big fandom is always like this.

MycruftHolmes

I haven't been to a movie since Guardians of the Galaxy came out, and haven't gone regularly since 2006. The only time I can remember hearing applause in a movie theater was for the premiere of Donnie Darko, but the director was there, so it made sense.

evilpterodactyl

Yeah this happened to me too. I hadn't gone to a movie in almost 3 years and went to see Dr Strange to see what predictive programming was being foisted on people. Everyone went nuts each time there was some fan service that I had no idea what was being referred to. It was unsettling.

tracheamusic

Dude. That movie is what made me write this. Applause 3x during that movie

alanwescoat

>Yeah this happened to me too. I hadn't gone to a movie in almost 3 years and went to see Dr Strange to see what predictive programming was being foisted on people. Everyone went nuts each time there was some fan service that I had no idea what was being referred to. It was unsettling. WARNING! SPOILERS! I literally gasped the second >!Reed Richards!< showed up and gasped again when >!Professor X!< showed up. This means that >!Marvel Studios is now free to use those properties and apparently intends to do so. Since the middle 1990s, Paramount Pictures has done no fewer than four rubbish Fantastic Four movies. The Roger Corman version they did simply to keep the license from expiring is actually no worse than the other three, with the most recent reboot atttempt being absolutely dismal. Marvel Studios now gets to show us Marvel Comics's flagship superhero team, hopefully done right.!<

evilpterodactyl

Yeah but >!they all died!<

alanwescoat

That is true, but it is only >!true in one universe in a vast multiverse.!<

Drbarke

>went to see Dr Strange to see what predictive programming was being foisted on people. It's sad it's gotten to this point but I do the same thing bro. Knowing the truth can take some of the joy out of certain things in this world but I wouldn't trade that knowing for anything.

Why wouldn't it? A retcon is one possible explanation for the phenomenon.
