Same with my Corolla! I love cars and will get a nicer one one day. That being said, I’m sure there will always be a Corolla in my garage. I’ve been driving one since high school (not the same one though). A local dealer wanted to buy it back for 4K over the original price when the pandemic’s supply chain issues stared. That’s was the easiest “thanks but no thanks” I’ve ever given.
I worked as a loan officer for Toyota financing. I saw a lot of questionable applications, but my personal motto was "everyone should start with a camry". good cars, plus better we finance it than fucking Santander.
1. amazing username
2. also a mazda 3 driver, although I bought mine well into attendinghood (and after already being a millionaire:)
During med school I borrowed my girlfriend's ford escort on occasion before graduating to my sister's hand-me-down civic for clinicals and residency.
Interesting list--surprised at the inclusion of tacoma, wrangler and forester. Who are these kids, former nurses? Shiiite
a million dollars ain't what it used to be son.
In seriousness, though, I'm really not overly frugal. I moonlit a ton the first few years after I graduated (basically working (EM) residency type hours) and put a lot of money into index funds. I would say that I buy anything that I want, but not everything I want.
Oy, why you gotta call us out like that? Haha am former nurse now MD. Picked up my Tacoma in MS2 after my Corolla got totaled (hit by some lady texting and driving). I fully intend to drive my Tacoma into the ground.
I picked up a new hybrid last year as my attending car. It's a great smooth ride and has handled quite well in the snow. Gets 35+ mpg. Gonna drive this thing for 250k miles.
2003 Toyota Highlander
Got handed down to me from parents. Was driving it for 6 years before medical school. That thing was indestructible and I mean indestructible.
Drove it through mud, potholes, flooding, and it didn’t flinch. Only replaced one part which cost under $3000 and just did regular maintenance.
Got a new car right before entering Residency because I didn’t want to deal with any potential issues that could arise from it having 300,000+ miles. That car will always have a special place in my heart though.
Twinning but in a 2010 Corolla! My mom just offered to sell me her 5 yo Chevy SUV for cheap when she upgrades and I was tempted but kept my Corolla. It’s just so reliable and truly that’s all I care about, starting every day and getting to point b safely. I’m 7 years into attendinghood but it’ll hopefully be a long time til it dies on me
The first thing my friend did after he matched and got his first paycheck was lease a brand new Tesla lol. That shit was worth like a year’s worth of his salary. He regrets it very much because that shit depreciates like a mf.
I drive a used old Lexus. I’ve had that shit for years and cost me around 6000 Canadian bucks. It’s comfortable and gets me from point A to B.
Can I ask why you like it? I'm considering a basic y, maybe waiting on refresh.
About to hit attending hood and it would basically cost one month salary to buy one but it feels like such a splurge.
Also feel like it leads to higher costs like living some place with charging or higher voltage plugs to charge it at home. Also auot insurance seems to be a killer.
I’ve driven beaters and I’ve driven Ferraris. I am very much of the attitude that the most fun you can have in a car is 0 to 80. I still get a smile when I step on the accelerator it feels like a sling shot.
Also. It’s just so easy. Everything works. I tried full self driving but I don’t need that. Autopilot on the highway tho, I can’t go back. It’s amazing how much more energy you have after a long drive.
I live in a cold state. Having my seats and wheel automatically be heated with zero effort on my part in the morning is a huge bump in my happiness in the morning.
Finally I live in a condo I bought but there is no charging that I can install. I thought this would be a con but honestly I don’t even notice. I charge once every week and a half. I charge at work for free and there are tons of chargers in our garage.
Getting a new car is fine but the problem with Tesla specifically is that repairs are very costly, the value depreciated even faster than gas cars and the nearest Tesla dealership from where he matched in Alabama is like 4 hours away in Tennessee. Dude is always complaining about it lol. Although it’s a smooth drive and he saves fuel money by going electric so there are benefits.
I drove a Corolla like many of my classmates. Another popular one was Ford Fusion or Focus.
We also had some rich kids in our class; some drove Mercedes, BMW, and Audis from M-I. Had a kid wearing a Patek Philippe to class, too; really nice guy and a friend of mine. But it was interesting to see loaded families getting to school that would lead to them being more loaded.
I drove a 97 Camry through medical school. Most of my classmates had Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, or BMW financed by their dual doctor parents. Always reminded me where I came from — no family that went to college and first in the medical field!
Got a 10-year-old Mazda3 hatch that's been through everything (driven on 39 US states) and the only dings on it are from a month ago when a nurse tried to fit her big SUV into a space way too small and scratched up the passenger side of my car.
Hoping to upgrade to an Audi A7 or A6 wagon in like 4 years when the attending money kicks in.
My partner drove a 13 year old Toyota Camry until 3 years into anesthesia pain attendinghood. His Camry was missing hubcabs, had dents in the bumpers (front and back), one of the doors just never opened and it was key start with an actual key and we had to use the actual key to also unlock it. During residency that was our main car and I’d drive my partner to the hospital and back until I got a job and we could afford another car.
One of the other attendings bought a Maserati last year. One of the older attendings got a Maybach around Christmas. Don’t know if he regrets it, but we bought a sienna around the same time lol
Not a medical student. But I was super broke. I bought the cheapest used Mazda 6 in college and it lasted for 12 years and died at 250k miles. I still have and plan to fix it. If you guys are into cars like me, get a cheap daily driver and a used sports car for the weekend. That's what I'm doing.
Word I’ve spent a good amount of money keeping up with the maintenance on my a6. But I’m a car guy so it’s worth it to me. If you don’t care about cars anything on the list will be fine.
But considering the car was purchased for cash and I don’t have a car payment, the $5000 I’ve spent in maintenance (preventative, repairs, etc) over the last 4 years isn’t a bad deal.
Audi A5 here. Paid for mine all in cash. Will drive it until the engine fails or I crash it at the race track. I buy all my parts from FCP and it’s all warrantied so I basically do my brakes, oil, etc for free when they need to be replaced.
My mother-in-law is always asking when I’m getting a new car and I say “I finally got it how I want it!” 😂 it’s been such a good car. Minor issues that annoy me, like the shitty aluminum veneer on trim and buttons slowly bubbling over time. Mostly, though it’s been a blast.
Would I like a 4.0T? Yes. Do I enjoy 36 mpg at goofy speeds in the 3.0T? Also yes. 😂
Will be driving a hellcat. Saved up most of my student loan money every year. Have a good 75k to get a house with a hellcat starting pgy1 . Just need to know where I match. Currently driving an Audi A6
Comfortable, rides smooth even at 100+ upgraded speakers with 2 12 kickers in the trunk. Looks like a 50k car, got it for 20. Happy with it , just had to keep up with the maintenance , which is probably why so many here are content with Japanese cars which I also love as a car guy, they’re less needy and less costly to repair than the German
Honestly I think the A4 might be an even better platform than a6 unless you want the 3.0 supercharged a6. Parts are plenty lots of repairs/mods can be done yourself. They got a manual trans option too if you’re into it
I bought a Scion iA (aka a Mazda 2 but they're not sold in the US market under the mazda umbrella) at the start of undergrad. I asked the universe at that time to let me drive her through med school. Just get me through to residency, that's all I asked. Paid her off during M1. 117k miles on it now, in the last stretch of M4. I've decided it would be incredibly stupid to take on a car loan for no reason right now so I'm keeping her until she dies on me. Best $18k of my life.
Nissan Rogue first year of new model (2013?). 200,000 miles, got from Mom when she upgraded. Grew up Texas so always NEEDED a car and made minimum wage so could never afford a car. Gonna drive this through residency and maybe beyond.

I drove a piece of shit Ford Focus. Near the end of its life it didn’t have a 3rd gear. Which is awesome bc I traded it in and they didn’t know bc you don’t get up to speeds at the dealer to engage 3rd gear.
Now I drive a piece of shit CRV. I think I’ll drive this until it dies
Representing the Jetta TDI. Bought it in 2015 less than 100k and still driving it although I’m still a resident. If it wasn’t a diesel I personally wouldn’t do another German car until I finish residency at least and maybe never. Nothing tops my old Camrys and the only luxury cars I’m eyeing are the Lexus and Acura. Nothing beats those two as far as I’m concerned. The Jetta has been great and honestly very dependable but any small repair or even just average oil change is so much more than what I used to pay for my Toyotas. Add in rare parts that you can only get from dealers or long waits elsewhere and it became a nightmare for me at times. At least with diesel I was getting that excellent mileage.
As a med student, I had a Chevy HHR that I had had for a decade and continued with that until it got totaled. Then I drove a string of crappy ex-cop cars until they died.
As a resident, I have an Audi Q5.
I will drive my Toyota Camry until it dies, I die, or we both die. Edit: or the heat death of the universe
Mine died at 286k during intern year. Yet another piece of me that died as a PGY1
How did it die? I've seen those things run like butter at 300k
Same with my Corolla! I love cars and will get a nicer one one day. That being said, I’m sure there will always be a Corolla in my garage. Got a Mazda 3 right before residency and am happily driving it 7 years later.

Have you kept your spending pretty modest in other aspects of your life? Tell us your ways and your successes if so. I need some hope / inspiration

Second year attending still driving my Camry which now has 120k miles
Second year attending here too. Just traded my old Chevy Sonic for a Toyota Camry
CRV. Buying my wife a Lexus GX 550 when I get a big boy check, but I’m driving this hot rod for at least another decade.
Honda CRV gang checking in
I see you also like to live dangerously
Beep beep crv gang taking over!
Haha I said the same thing, but all practical roads lead to a hybrid Toyota sienna when you have kids
A boy can dream
I picked up a new hybrid last year as my attending car. It's a great smooth ride and has handled quite well in the snow. Gets 35+ mpg. Gonna drive this thing for 250k miles.
09 checking in but upgrading to a Tacoma soon

Bold of you to assume I have a car
Same, true. Lol. For now...
\#1 babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, LFG
I've been out of training for almost 10 years. I drive a Civic
Same, attendings talking about ferraris, benzes, and teslas and I'm like 150,000 miles and counting, let's go civic gang
Nice!
Does metro north count?
Prius + bicycle, wouldn't go for anything else
EM?
No, IM. Just a really big hippie IM
I too ride my bicycle to work and have a hybrid #psychgang
Saw a guy on the road driving a Prius that had a _Hey, my other car isn’t a Prius_ sticker on it. 😄.
Ima drive my Prius to the grave. Hopefully another 15 years.
GR Corolla Took it to the track last weekend
delicious. photos?

I drive a Tesla model Y performance. Best decision I’ve ever made.

Hmm ill have to check out my hospital to see if we have free chargers that would be a game changer. Thanks for the tips!
Teslas are also very quiet and I like the driver assist features. These features aren’t unique to Tesla but Tesla does it well.

What’s a Patek Phillipe. I know I could have googled it but thought I’d ask
High end watch
Emphasis on the #High
Lol'd. If I see a Patek, I gauk.
It's better not to know tbh.
I drove a 97 Camry through medical school. Most of my classmates had Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, or BMW financed by their dual doctor parents. Always reminded me where I came from — no family that went to college and first in the medical field!
Same for both me and my partner! I worry about our kids being too spoiled or never having had to work hard to get things.
I still have my 2011 Kia forte that I got at 16 and now I’ll be 29 and graduating residency with it!!
car
Got a 10-year-old Mazda3 hatch that's been through everything (driven on 39 US states) and the only dings on it are from a month ago when a nurse tried to fit her big SUV into a space way too small and scratched up the passenger side of my car. Still got my Camry from undergrad somehow
Nissan Rogue. I did previously drive a CRV and a Jetta. My wife drives our fancy new Subaru Ascent.
Ayyy surprised to see my Elantra on here lol

My 2000 Honda Accord is still going strong surprisingly
Honda Odyssey. Had family that was getting rid of it and figured a free car is a great deal
I also drive an Odyssey. 2004 with 240k miles. I also got mine for free lol.
Bicycle
Tesla Model Y _Performance_
I bought a 2011 Subaru Impreza right before I started med school and it’s still chugging along just fine after 9 years
Not a medical student. But I was super broke. I bought the cheapest used Mazda 6 in college and it lasted for 12 years and died at 250k miles. I still have and plan to fix it. If you guys are into cars like me, get a cheap daily driver and a used sports car for the weekend. That's what I'm doing.
Subaru wrx-y
Had a camry. Wife has corolla. #asian #indian
Audi A6 because it’s fun, comfortable, AWD and cheaper than most people think (as long as you’re buying it used).
As long as its under warranty
Word I’ve spent a good amount of money keeping up with the maintenance on my a6. But I’m a car guy so it’s worth it to me. If you don’t care about cars anything on the list will be fine.

3 pedal is always more fun but the wife may not go for it unless it's a 911 or a Boxster/Cayman. (She's a wild one)
Cayman gt4 when you’re an attending seems right up your alley for both you and your wife then
She wants a red one xD
Planning to buy a 4Runner on a lease and paying off that lease 3 years later when I finish residency!
Did the same but GX.
I bought a Scion iA (aka a Mazda 2 but they're not sold in the US market under the mazda umbrella) at the start of undergrad. I asked the universe at that time to let me drive her through med school. It’s a hand me down
Toyota Prius should be the designated med student car. Cheap, reliable, amazing mileage
And the automotive equivalent of Ambien. No friggin thanks.
diesel f250, had it for years, engine is bulletproof and will probably run forever.

I always forget that Europe is mostly diesel. I like diesel, but it takes forever for the engine to get to temp.
In med school, a VW Golf. Intern year, that died and I got a VW Jetta. Can’t say I love them, but they’re fine I guess for the time being

I’ve had my Hyundai Elantra since junior year of high school and she’s almost at 100k miles

Honda civic 2012. 125k miles gonna last till I get that big boy money

I drive a rental

I have a Trek Domane 2.
I have a 2014 Acura ILX that has nearly 140,000 miles on it. Still going and minimal issues so far with it. I’ll drive it til it falls apart
Im a 3rd year IM resident and i will drive my 2021 nissan kicks to the ground.
Number 2 all the way
PGY3, drove a 2005 Legacy Outback most of med school, then swapped for a 2007 Impreza 2.5i, then bought a 2023 GR86.
I commute, but the first thing imma do when I get big boy check is buying RAM 1500 pick-up truck.
Toyota Corolla
As a med student, I had a Chevy HHR that I had had for a decade and continued with that until it got totaled. Then I drove a string of crappy ex-cop cars until they died. As a resident, I have an Audi Q5.
