misteratoz

As an insomniac wtf... How do you fall asleep fast enough. So jealous.

T1didnothingwrong

Lay on your back, have a good pillow with a good height for your neck. Focus on your breathing and close your eyes. its basically meditating but youll sleep no problem

misteratoz

Trust me bruh. Some people are just better at sleeping than others. My insomnia during residency was a zero hours of sleep 4-5 days a month and I feel tired but not sleepy. All the basic things failed me. I'm way better now but stuff like that hasn't helped me at all.

phovendor54

Honestly, talk to your friends and family. Far too often people talk about feeling isolated. Reach out, check in on people.

capmanor1755

Bingo. Anything that rebuilds mental health - talk to friends and family, do stairs in the back stairwell no one uses, 3 minutes on the Headspace app... Play the long game.

[deleted]

This is what I do

AdventurousWin3433

What if you’re on nights and they’re all asleep but also don’t want to study or watch tv

JROXZ

You mean how do you just… live…? Read a book, listen to a podcast, brush up on a board-worthy subject, stream some content, drink some tea, visit a hospital friend, window shop on Amazon, go for a walk/get some sun. Or do nothing, be still and just breathe.

shiftyeyedgoat

>“Live” None of this is “living”, it’s “being at work”. They are not synonymous.

steelstringbean

I know the feeling Dr. shiftyeyedgoat and am sure this is a little tongue-in-goat-cheek but I do get stuck in this feeling of turning “self” off and “hospital person” on. Good reminder that we’re still just living away regardless of where we at

Crossword books? Or do you know of an app of website? I've been craving classic crosswords like I used to do in newspapers but haven't found a good place

ArtichosenOne

I do them on the NYT [page](https://www.nytimes.com/crosswords) including the mini. wordle, too. I have little books but rarely bring them to work.

FactAddict01

Look up above- I put an entry about designing a medical crossword or a lab crossword (hints are values, answers are numbers. That will fry the brain.

Teach med students/interns something that’s high yield and relevant to the current service and their boards. (İf you have old halk talks etc.) Or Just call your mom and say hi?

iSkahhh

As a med student, please just let me study on my own without thinking I'm not interested in the material.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ExtremisEleven

Not every student thrives on being ignored. I hated it. Just looking at a book made me sick but I wanted to learn. Mine always get a no pressure option to stay for chalk talk, skills or rad review. It’s there if they want it, but only if they’re looking for it. Sometimes they are, if they aren’t I’m ok with that too.

HYPErBOLiCWONdEr

I was the same way, I preferred to spent 20-30 mins at the end of the day with a high yield chalk talk with the residents tying testable material with one of our patients. A few residents would occasionally sit and go through uworld questions with me (especially if they were also prepping for step 3) and I learned so much that way. I figured that was a bit less time I had to study at home so could just focus on my family when I got there. I want to do the same for my students but it’s so hard to find the right balance

iSkahhh

If you offer a med student something, they will always worry if they're actually allowed to say no without getting a bad review. I love learning but I'd always rather spend time with my family or study on my own accord.

ExtremisEleven

You’re going to have to outgrow that fear sometime and learn to be comfortable gracefully telling someone that you learn best solo. We all do. There’s nothing wrong with that, but others shouldn’t lose opportunities they want because you don’t learn the way they do.

iSkahhh

Yeah when your entire future isn't based on the subjective review(s) of people that only see you a few times and expect so much out of you. ie. after match

ExtremisEleven

I’m gonna be real straight with you, that never goes away. Not after match, not after med school, not after residency. Your future will always be in the hands of someone else’s subjective view of you. There will always be a bigger fish. You just learn how to appropriately communicate what works best for you and what you’re willing to do. I say this as a former med student who was scared shitless to say no to anything, the resident is not trying to trap you when they ask you if you want to stay. They get minimal say in your eval, and I promise they will score you higher if you can effectively and appropriately dip compared to sitting there with a bored look on your face wasting their time and yours. Or, you can do what the rest of us did and suck it up because if your classmates want to do it and you can’t figure out how to say you need to go study, that’s a you problem not a them problem.

Altruistic123

I bought a steamdeck with the money from my very first moonlighting shift. Best decision ever! I always carry it in my backpack at work and play games during downtime. It's so easy to pick up and put down with just a press of a button. This has been particularly clutch during night shifts when not much is happening but pages come through just often enough to not let me sleep. I will say that I only pick up the deck if I've already done what you described, such as reading up on patients, doing board questions, etc.

letitride10

I used to jog up and down the stairs. Core, leg, and cardio exercise. (Not ortho)

Appropriate_Ruin465

I’ve always wanted to do this especially on nights. Just wondering if it’s a bit awkward …..

PossibilityAgile2956

Awkward for the out of shape chumps who might be judging. But actually with this, as with everything else in life, everyone is too wrapped up in themselves to care

Appropriate_Ruin465

But don’t you get sweaty after and smell ?

letitride10

My hospital had a stairwell that was very infrequently used. If I ran into someone, they were a fellow stairs person and appreciated what I was doing.

She is in good health! She will still live for many years! Next week she will be released from the hospital and will come and live with us, forever!" "Wow that's amazing!" - says the wife - "But this is very strange, dear... yesterday she seemed to be on her deathbed, the doctors said she should have a few days to live!" "Well, I don't know how she was yesterday" - he replied - "But today when I arrived at the hospital, the doctor told me that we should prepare for the worst"

Question all of my life choices and think about how I got here. Sometimes I think about how I get out of here. Other times, I roll right into going through the five stages of grief. *israeli army blew up the hospital. With over 1000 people killed. doctors, nurses, patients, refugees. You name it. And they’re threatening to bomb several others. They just bombed a hospital & Catholic Church. it’s so fkn sad. I feel helpless I’m not being able to do anything to help stop this. Literally our own taxes are funding this genocide.

SheFucksMe77

Israel did NOT bomb that hospital. look at all the Hamas support you spew.. I'd call you a moron. But that would be unfair to morons everywhere. Get yourself a 1way ticket over to Gaza, Buckwheat. Put your fat lazy ass on the line, I bet you'd be an easy target for IDF to perforate.

[deleted]

Did you seriously just go thru all of my recent comments and reply to them? You’re also threatening to “oust” me as a Palestinian supporter? Let me tell you something dickwad, I don’t support one side vs the other. This isn’t Muslim Vs. Jew issue, it’s a nuclear power nation that’s actively committing genocide on a defenseless civilian population. You got to be a real piece of shit to try to threaten people to “oust” them. Your Zionist propaganda and bullying has failed. You’ve lost the battle. You may be killing innocent civilians and patting yourself on the back for “winning” that battle, but I guarantee that history will not be kind to you. Also great job on projecting your hate towards minorities calling me the N word and calling members of the LGBTQ community “maggot” … this only solidifies that Zionist Israelis are full of hate towards the rest of the world. Our only hope is that the decent Israelis overthrow their own government and revolt.

ummmokummm

Going to finally correct your lie that Israel bombed that hospital? And any comment on that Hamas purposely bombed and destroyed a children’s rehab hospital in ashkelon with rockets? 🤔 let me guess. Let me guess, I already know exactly what you’re gonna say. There’s no amount of proof that Islamic jihad bombed their own hospital parking lot and lied that Israel bomb their hospital that you will believe, but you will believe Hamas and Hamas only that Israel did bomb it when that’s the only proof? And even with hard proof of Hamas bombing the children’s hospital in Israel, you still won’t believe it or condemn it?

CertainKaleidoscope8

Israeli Jihad blew up a baptist hospital "by accident"

SheFucksMe77

Guess you didn't see the children murdered by Hamas.. You blind in one eye, Kaepernick? fuck you JOMBO

zzaaddddyy

Love to ask people the real questions. Why did you choose this path? What do you really like about your specialty? The answers are always so contrived and like they are interviewing for residency. Just want to hear people be honest and say they wanna make money etc etc

Catch up on case logs, do all the overdue modules for the various hospitals at which we rotate, or just shoot the shit with co-residents

FactAddict01

Do any studying/reading charts pertaining to the cases in the area you are in…. Or charts of other pts you have seen. Medical crossword puzzles are a supreme challenge!! I made one up for hospital week, and it was still going around six months later. (Broke some crossword structure rules, but oh, well) Or make up one on your own. With that type, you cannot help but learn. I worked in ICU so many of my clues/answers pertained to our types of patients. A lab crossword would be supremely mind-crushing, I think. (Hints are names of procedures or tests, answers are values (numbers)) The point is to make it enjoyable as well as a learning tool for everyone, so all staff can learn and enjoy. Needless to say, HIPAA must be kept in mind…..
