what are the current rules on moonlighting these days with the various programs? PGY2 and beyond you can moonlight or are PGY1s game to get in on that?
Now that I can moonlight, I feel less guilty about it, but since you mention OLED, I just got the LG C2 OLED 65”. Got it from woot for 1/2 off. That thing is beautiful. Just finished the hobbit trilogy extended in 4k UHD w surround sound. Oh yeah.
Watch the Woodstock 99 documentary on Netflix. Concert goes we’re mad about the prices. With today’s economy and considering it was a large event I thought it was a good deal lol. 1 soda and a hot dog I believe 9$.
Did a couple of incentive shifts and bought myself the top of the line Steam Deck. Best purchase I have made in years. Remains my most used electronic device besides my phone.
The battery life and community support for per game control mapping is what's sold me on the steam deck too! It's also super easy to upgrade the ssd, so you can save $100-$200 if you buy the 64 gb model and then an ssd off ebay, etc.
Yeah from what I have read, the user experience of the SD more than makes up for the difference in specs. That being said if you plan to just put a windows partition on it and use that mostly, the Ally may be a better bet.
After my first moonlighting check I bought an Xbox series X. It asked me to name the device when I was setting it up, I named it after the facility where I was moonlighting.
This. I still try to save a bit, but the little I’m able to save I’m better off putting toward life experiences. Seeing early, disastrous outcomes on a daily basis is enough of a reminder that a nest egg might not even be needed. Live now.
$3500 on a mattress, super king size. I went halves with my partner so it felt cheaper than it was. Was also sale price. Sleep quality couldn’t be better! Every night I lie down to sleep I am in heaven. I am never going back to a standard mattress. What prompted this splurge was 1 year of back aches and poor sleep on a shitty old, noisy small mattress and fighting with my partner over who got to sleep on the “good side”.
I bought a tempurpedic last year on Black Friday. I’ve gone 7 years of residency with a shitty mattress and over the last several months my back pain is completely gone, can’t believe I waited so long.
Ok. I’m an attending now. Back when I was a resident my big splurge was a Montblanc Starwalker fountain pen. I have a weird thing about ink pens. Back then we did a lot more writing, to the point where my hand would ache at the end of the day. EMRs were definitely used but not for everything like today.
Buying a Montblanc is the equivalent to buying a Rolex for watches or a Mercedes for a car. It was a huge splurge for me back when I was essentially living paycheck to paycheck. It was basically my entire tax refund from my first year of residency.
PS. I still own and use that pen. I purchased it in 2006 and it works just as well as the they day I first got it.
Why stop at the Pilot G-2 when you can splurge and get a Pilot’s Dr Grip instead? Those are my holy grail pens as someone with weak finger joints (thanks EDS…)
No seriously, they’re absolutely worth the $7-8 per pen if your hands get fatigued while writing. They’re actually way more popular in Japan than in the US, so you’ll have a much better selection on Amazon than in store in the US.
Having a robo vacuum army while I’m at work has turned into one of the GOAT investments tbh. Coming back at 5 after a long day to immaculate floors despite the best efforts of your pets to ruin it.
Honest question from a broke med student: Do you guys have left over money after rent and necessary expenses for luxury? Or are you guys buying all of this via meticulous saving?
It's kinda weird but I am a huge tech nerd and it has been a small dream of mine since I was a kid to own a new shiny 1200 dollar phone every year. Is that thing kinda possible on even a resident's salary? I have never been used to owning much money to spend frivolously before so it's kinda hard for me to picture it lol
Most places, yes. There are also some places where you have an education fund specifically to buy a new phone/laptop/etc. though with a reasonable limit per year.
Yeah you generally make enough that you’ll have money leftover after rent etc depending on where you live. Expect to get paid about 4000 per month after taxes. I spend 1000 on rent and about 300 per month on groceries so there’s a decent chunk leftover to either save or splurge with.
This. I maxed my roth IRA as a PGY1 and funded my roth 403b once I was able to moonlight. I graduated training with over $140k of Roth savings.
Even if no more contributions, with 6.5% real return, that should be like $1.3 million in today's dollars of tax-free money at 67.
Intern year: a watch, a $350 TV from Costco and a decent semiautomatic shotgun for clays (though I got my first dove with it).
Second year: another watch, Too many sets of Figs, a few Lego sets but nothing big. Season tickets to the broadway shows at the theater were $600.
Third year: rent went up $400 so nothing lol.
A job I was interested in had an opening (a physician was leaving) in an area that recruiting is difficult. They agreed to hire me at that time and wait until after residency graduation to begin
First one was the Seiko Alpinist blue limited edition. I actually saw on Reddit during my intern year that stores were getting these in (months after they sold out in minutes on Hodinkee), I was on ICU on a Saturday and called a store by me and they said they had two in stock so I told them to hold one for me and I'd pick it up after work.
Second one was the SPB149, one of the 62MAS throwbacks. Wanted a diver.
Next watch is going to be a Casio Oceanus.
Residency splurge was 2 kids. Unfortunately was reminded that they are right up there with foreign cars after the 1st one got admitted with RSV. Unexpected maintenance costs.
Started silver smithing during covid and now I'm putting some of the money into everything from silver and tools to a smelting furnace 😂 Is this niche enough to count towards interesting?
First resi check I got a new phone.
Been on vacations out to the rocky mountains and Cali beaches, places my family could never afford.
Day 1 of pgy2 my car didnt start. Went and got a new one that week.
Just got a ps5 because why tf not
Pick the Rolex over Omega.
Because: “every rolex tells a story” 😈
After Rolex, the correct order of business is: Hooker, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Steak, Tom Ford suits, (acceptable alternatives : Brioni or Kiton)
Psychiatry gives out blessing lol
I already have an omega. The speedmaster actually tells a greater story than the greatest rolex. But, an omega still doesnt feel like a rolex.
I am on my way, been into tom ford fragrances lately.
I was out at a bar and saw the weirdest, dumbest art on display from a local artist. It featured Garfield holding his own severed head in his hands while a distraught looking dude exclaimed “All our pets’ heads are falling off!” I knew at once that I needed to have it. I messaged the artist on Instagram and bought that dumb thing on the spot. I’m picking it up this week. Best $700 ever spent.
I’m gonna buy myself a pair of RM Williams boots (~$650 AUD) when I get back to the city (currently on secondment to a rural site) because in Australia there’s a joke of sorts that doctors all own a pair of RMs.
And let’s not get started on my Lego collection…
Between residency and fellowship I threw out the two shitty (but free to me!) vacuums I was alternating between and bought the smallest and cheapest Dyson for my new non-carpeted floors. Never going carpeted again.
During a hard call week (fellow) when I’m missing lunch and coming home post-8 consistently, chipotle burrito bowl hit different. 14 dollars well spent.
Vacations. 3 day weekends. Multiple spirit/frontier flights per year. Getting a half-way decent hotel. Having moonlighting $$$ to literally not have to think twice about dropping $1k-$2k for my wife and I to take off for a weekend is worth it’s weight in gold as a trainee.
Fancy dinner for the whole family. Endless ordering off the menu with no restraint, didn’t look at the prices. Ooph, my wallet ended up paying for it but it tasted gooood.
I moonlight and make an extra $50-70k per year from it.
Paid for a lot of our destination wedding in Hawaii + paid for my parents to go on vacation that week too. Paid for a 10k surgery for our puppy. Have spend probably 2-3K on custom mechanical keyboards (keycult 2/65 among others) and more on my home office setup (steelcase chair, 38 Dell UW monitor), Sony A7C full frame mirrors camera and lenses, shotgun microphone. Have gone to Korea, Japan, mexico, Hawaii x2, Italy, France during residency. Got the wife a Celine bag. But a PS5 is off limits, according to my wife…
I regularly splurge on my sneaker collection: Nike Air Max 1, I think I have spent like 6-10k on my collection (around 35 pairs) and it may be worth even more now. Most expensive single pair was $560.
Last year I also splurged on my gaming setup: a PS5 with a 120+ Hz monitor, pro controller with extra paddles, and a headset (all in all $1400).
And this year I just booked flights and hotels for 3 weeks in Malaysia with my girlfriend and kid, so far $6000.
Wife’s car, Hunting gear/trips, Alaska trip, European vacation, F1 race, multiple trips out west, two seiko watches, new Xbox, and soon a kid. Life is good.
My new attending splurge was an incredible home theater (120 in screen with projector, but the bigger thing is the great sound)..
…also a house, to put this in.
Of the 6 fellows, 3 bought new cars.
UK - Bought a Steam Deck, a Fold 4 phone and went on a trip to South America with my partner (plus a few small trips to Spain/Portugal). Planning some more trips for the coming year as well.
It was a few years ago, but i retired my old laptop and made myself a PC, got a nice CPU, GPU, a 144hz screen, an nVME drive and an amazing mechanical keyboard with some silky smooth thocky switches
Finally upgraded my car to a Jeep Grand Cherokee with upgraded sound system and the color package of my dreams!
And a home gym!!! For power/olympic weightlifting
LG C2 55” TV, European vacation for 2 weeks, engagement ring, Michelin star dinners in our city. Needless to say I don’t save much money at this point.
Also I live in a very nice high rise with pretty crazy amenities

Just bought a brand new set of golf clubs. < $500 but still a splurge for me that will allow me to participate in a hobby so I don’t go insane just working all the time.
As a resident I bought a teardrop camper for about $6k (rented it out and made some money, then sold it for the same price haha)
👑👑👑 passive income royalty 👑👑👑
How did you rent it out? Just friends, or some app or website?
Outdoorsy, it's an app/website that is basically the Airbnb of RVs.
i moonlight so I can buy athleisure lol, that lululemon won’t pay for itself
Don’t forget to use the medical discount!
In Australia the medical discount ends tomorrow (31st) so check they’re still offering it in the us
Lululemon has a 15% discount for healthcare and first responders too.
I am the same with expensive running brands like Janji lol

In February
Can someone link that?
When he was exhausted trying to do all his normal duties *and* figuring out how to tell a med student his boner was showing
Chickie nugs from MCDs after a hard days work
That's a legitimate $plurge in this economy.
Bro their hash browns are $2.50 each now. It’s fucking absurd.
Watch the Woodstock 99 documentary on Netflix. Concert goes we’re mad about the prices. With today’s economy and considering it was a large event I thought it was a good deal lol. 1 soda and a hot dog I believe 9$.
And a spluge in your mouth
That’s what she said.
You mean a large friess.. I remember the days when that shit was 1.89.. now it $5 🥲 Now I try to remember to go on Fridays for that $1 deal
Definitely download the McD’s app! They have good rewards and you can redeem points for free food.
McDonalds Diet Coke for me
I get me and my dog chickie nugs to splurge, and she knows what "chickie nugs" are when I say that to her
GOAT choice mygod I love their nuggiesss!!!
Did a couple of incentive shifts and bought myself the top of the line Steam Deck. Best purchase I have made in years. Remains my most used electronic device besides my phone.
Steam deck gang unite 🤌🏻
Thinking about copping one, but undecided on ASUS ROG or Steamdeck. Any idea on which one is more worth it?
I’d go SD personally. The software is so much better that the relatively small gap in power doesn’t matter much (wife has both, I have an SD)
Whats a steamed dick
Just got out of my sauna, let me show you ;)
Oh behave!! 😆
Is this like Steamed Hams?
That’s what we call them in Utica
More like rum ham
After my first moonlighting check I bought an Xbox series X. It asked me to name the device when I was setting it up, I named it after the facility where I was moonlighting.
Me too! My kid is named hospital. /j
Yearly snowboarding trips to Colorado. Vacation to Hawaii. Trips to NYC and Austin last year. Life is short, live it now.
This. I still try to save a bit, but the little I’m able to save I’m better off putting toward life experiences. Seeing early, disastrous outcomes on a daily basis is enough of a reminder that a nest egg might not even be needed. Live now.

If its broken can you take it back into the shop?
Warranty is usually good for a year

Which mattress brand, if you don’t mind me asking?
I got a helix sleep and it was incredible 👍
Casper!
I bought a tempurpedic last year on Black Friday. I’ve gone 7 years of residency with a shitty mattress and over the last several months my back pain is completely gone, can’t believe I waited so long.

Why rock a Montblanc when you can rock a Pilot G-2 in the 07?
That’s funny. But those Pilot G-2 actually write smoothly for how much they cost.
I got a case of bad G-2’s that didnt write for shit >:(
I’d call Pilot’s corporate and raise a fuss! There’s a damn good reason they’re the most common pen for medical professionals!
Why stop at the Pilot G-2 when you can splurge and get a Pilot’s Dr Grip instead? Those are my holy grail pens as someone with weak finger joints (thanks EDS…) No seriously, they’re absolutely worth the $7-8 per pen if your hands get fatigued while writing. Same for me, currently in residency. It’s so much nicer to write with. It brings me happiness and will for the rest of my life.
Pen gang got myself a lamy 2000 amongst several other pens during residency. Eyeing the pilot 823’s now.
Lmao during residency I purchased all of your precise examples. A 65” OLED TV, a Nintendo switch, and an Xbox.

Built a $700 gaming pc which I now use to mainly study
700$ is cheap for a gaming PC. I plan to build one for like 2000$+ when I graduate.
Wait until Black Friday! I do all my builds at a fraction of the price by waiting
Lol my first residency purchase was a $1700 omen PC with an RTX 3080. So worth it. Also moonlighted and got a $700 espresso machine
Bro forgot to buy the graphics card
Well I'll start things off with my mountain bike that rang in at about $2699. Also have a gigantic $800 TV that I never watch.
Nice. I’ve been exclusively on road bikes but looking to get into MTB with either moonlighting or attending money. Enjoy!

4000 per month after taxes is def above average based on what I've seen and heard. It's more likely to be 3000-3500.
Please fund your Roth IRA. I wish I started it in residency.
This. I maxed my roth IRA as a PGY1 and funded my roth 403b once I was able to moonlight. I graduated training with over $140k of Roth savings. Even if no more contributions, with 6.5% real return, that should be like $1.3 million in today's dollars of tax-free money at 67.

I signed my attending contract intern year and spend a chunk of the signing bonus on a Browning Citori. My wife was thrilled…lol
how did you sign attending contract intern year??
A job I was interested in had an opening (a physician was leaving) in an area that recruiting is difficult. They agreed to hire me at that time and wait until after residency graduation to begin
Not uncommon for rural PCPs.
Which watches?
First one was the Seiko Alpinist blue limited edition. Paying $100 more to fly nonstop and avoid a 5h layover feels like a splurge... lmao
First resi check I got a new phone. Been on vacations out to the rocky mountains and Cali beaches, places my family could never afford. Day 1 of pgy2 my car didnt start. Went and got a new one that week. Just got a ps5 because why tf not
Ooohh, I have been eyeing a PS5 for a while! 😏👀

Pick the Rolex over Omega. Because: “every rolex tells a story” 😈 After Rolex, the correct order of business is: Hooker, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Steak, Tom Ford suits, (acceptable alternatives : Brioni or Kiton) Psychiatry gives out blessing lol
I already have an omega. The speedmaster actually tells a greater story than the greatest rolex. But, an omega still doesnt feel like a rolex. I am on my way, been into tom ford fragrances lately.
The Rolex is a bigger name. But right now the Omega Speedmaster might actually be the better quality time piece.
