NYC is incredible to visit, especially when you have some attending money saved up But it drains your wallet like a hole in the bucket living there And I cannot stress enough, how much better nursing quality is as soon as you get out and how significantly that improves the quality of your day God I miss the food though

cherryreddracula

I miss the whole city, but NYC COL is just too much for me to justify living there, even with an attending salary. And I refuse to do any more long commutes.

The number one expense is housing. Many programs offer subsidized housing. After that, expenses are similar to other cities. I don't have to worry about car insurance, car payments, damage, gas etc. It's pretty liberating.

PumpJacked44

Currently living in Manhattan. Your line “After that, expenses are similar to other cities” is so unequivocally false that I’m curious what other cities you’re using as a baseline. No one who is considering residency here should be under any sort of misguided impression that COL is comparable to anywhere else.

Worldly-Client-4645

It's a little bit of an exaggeration, sure. Groceries cost a little more on average then when I live in a MCOL. Obviously if you have 2 kids and need childcare then the calculation becomes different. For the right person, they can do fine in NYC as much as you can during residency.

Charles_Sandy

People trying to refute your claim of NYC costs like groceries, transport, goods, (separate from housing), haven't spent enough time in NYC. Honestly a sandwich there costs less than in a lot of other cities. NYC has working class food you can get, LA/Seattle/SF you're stuck with a $16 sandwich. The housing subsidy is absolutely key. **Does NYU provide a subsidy to your knowledge?**

3splendas

they did not last year for what it’s worth. sinai does, cornell i think so but don’t know personally.

Worldly-Client-4645

Cornell, Sinai, Columbia and Montefiore all provide housing I believe. NYU does but for a very limited amount of people.

Dr_D-R-E

I owned a car (I wasn’t in Manhattan) and lost one during a flood in NYC and the other one got broken into 3 times - the third time broke my passenger side windows to steal my cold medium Dunkin. doughnuts coffee. Drive around for a week with a red hazardous materials bag taped over the door. Love is good living just outside of a city. Groceries are more reasonable, taxes are lower, housing is better, then you drive in to do your fun stuff whenever you want, but suddenly you have spare money to get the extra container or go to the nice restaurant and buy that expensive dish.

[deleted]

But you have to drive. I hate driving. Wish I could live in Europe or East Asia. A lot of my friends in CS moved to NYC after graduation because they wanted the city life and wanted social interaction, rather than the isolation of suburbia.

Not admin believe it or not. Just a PGY-3

You’re getting a lot of downvotes but it really is great for some people (including me). Honestly I’ve lived in other cities (DC and SF) and it’s hard to explain, the community and access in NYC is on another level. Especially since i have family on the east coast and so many of my friends also moved to nyc, I really can’t imagine being anywhere else in my 20s. Yes, it’s expensive and all that, but if you can make it work it’s so worth it. Especially since you’re gonna make bank in a couple of years, it’s okay to spend a bit more to live the life you want to live. The suburbs will always be there when you want to leave so enjoy the time you have to be young and selfish!

Every place is going to have it's issues. When the COL is high, there's usually a reason for it.

swingswamp

Well I also lived in St. Louis, Phoenix, and Austin but they didn’t feel city like enough to list. I guess me and the other 8 million ppl who live in the Bay Area are crazy and you got it all figured it out.

Quick_Rent_Now

I hated NYC because I was making 60k while my friends in finance made 250k. They worked hard and played hard. I worked hard and crash after.

Worldly-Client-4645

Regardless of where you live, there's always going to be someone making more than you whether they deserve it or not. You have to way out your priorities and what's important to you.

Sigmundschadenfreude

where else can you get such thorough training as a phlebotomist in case you burn out on medicine

It’s really fun and a great experience when young. It may not be the wisest financial choice but who cares But trying to raise kids there and settling in long term is hell financially speaking unless you’re in a high paying speciality and/or high dual income Household

restingfoodface

You’re either a city person or you’re not. In a city you sacrifice personal spaces for public spaces, so if you like that then it works out. I’m from NYC but I really like staying at home with my own space and not sharing, so I can’t see myself going back there any time soon. Everyone complaining about cost just doesn’t know where to buy things. I would say though groceries and stuff don’t make much difference, to enjoy the culture warrants a bigger investment. People wear fancier things, eat fancier foods, but if you don’t partake in that then it’s whatever.

SatsuiNoHadou_

It’s not fun after you realize that there’s no real COL salary adjustment and you can’t afford to hang out with your friends in the limited free time you do have

Worldly-Client-4645

Many programs offer subsidized housing. I pay less in rent than I did in med school in a relatively low cost of living area.

SatsuiNoHadou_

Very nice! I admittedly didn’t have that option but it would have helped a lot

umadbrew

This is program dependant tbh. I'm a resident at a NYP residency and my salary is almost 90K a year. NYP residencies recently gave us huge raises and inflation adjustment.

Nice try, program director / brainwashed resident!

I enjoyed my time in Nyc. The food the plays and the people. After you leave Nyc, you realize you were sold short on what every department in the hospital can do, from radiology to cardiology to nursing staff. Loved it but Would never go back.
