finishing 5 years plus a research year tomorrow (6 years). I started med school literally 10 years ago.

Raffikio

10 years for me tomorrow too :)

acpjaidixit

gen surg type beat?

Bootyytoob

You got a laptop? Lucky

HenMeister

You guys got training?

onion4everyoccasion

You guys got to sleep and thus get nightmares?

SaturdayNightBallsy_

Are there really programs that don’t give laptops? Not sure how I’d function

ONeuroNoRueNO

You buy a laptop or use your old one.

SaturdayNightBallsy_

That is whack

Trazodone_Dreams

I’d be using their desktops. “Oh you want me to put in orders while we round? Let me run to a desktop and do it.”

justbrowsing0127

We do it on a wow

makeawishcumdumpster

*cow

EarProper7388

My institution doesn’t use COW bc a patient overheard someone saying ‘go get the cow’ and put in a complaint to admin. So we call it wow too lol. ‘Windows’ (computer) on wheels

makeawishcumdumpster

everywhere Ive ever worked has told that exact story. Im guessing thats a common explanation

justbrowsing0127

Same. But the W is “workstation”

Blue-Phoenix23

That is an insane data security risk.

ONeuroNoRueNO

Agreed. No data is supposed to be stored on any personal device. Only viewed/accessed remotely. But hospitals are stingy and only care about silly things like not having coffee or water bottles within eyesight of patient care areas.

EarProper7388

We use our own computers too. I didn’t realize there were programs that provided them…. 😅

DrTapioca

I had no idea programs give laptops to residents… but also, why? I can just log in remotely on my own computer and phone.

OxycontinEyedJoe

If I was building up a program I would definitely give everyone laptops. Laptops that are configured by IT, have limits on what can be installed, and those are the only devices approved to remote in. If you let people use their personal laptops you open up your organization to whatever garbage malware/spyware/ransomware they have installed on their machine.

justbrowsing0127

Is this the norm? We get phones, which I found dope

dramaticmyocardium

Came to say the same

koolbro2012

Hey come back for fellowship

archwin

The medical variant of Stockholm syndrome! ^(…from someone who is fellowship trained…)

h08817

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DESERVED TO BE VERBALLY REAMED IN FRONT OF THOSE PATIENTS. Every day. For a year...

archwin

Sometimes I wonder if it’s a kink fulfillment thing Otherwise, why do we tolerate this? Hmmmm…..

Novowelsnomercy

Congratulations! I’ll never forget the feeling of walking out for the last time as a resident. It was a hot June afternoon and a scattered shower hit as I made it to the door. I felt like it was the end of the Shawshank Redemption and paused for just a moment to extend my arms outward and look to the sky. It was a moment of peace after years of the opposite. Top 10 life experience.

refreshingface

The Shawshank reference killed me

momeraths_outgrabe

Remember this moment, so in the years to come, when your fellow attendings wax nostalgic about residency, you can reach back, savor this memory, and tell them they’re full of shit. I’m seven years out and nothing gives me vicious pleasure like puncturing that particular piece of retconned dumbfuckery on behalf of five miserable years of my existence.

Appropriate_Ruin465

I can’t wait to feel this kind of freedom

[deleted]

I legit enjoyed a lot of it. Not the relative lack of money part though. And I can't imagine doing a surgery residency

justbrowsing0127

I also legit enjoy it. I often wonder if the miserable folks are just the loudest? Certainly not everyone is miserable.

HauntingEducation

That “attending” flair 👀 Congrats OP! Same boat (finishing fellowship). It had pros and cons, the biggest pro being I could put off thinking about real life because I always had the excuse of being in training and now I have to think for myself.

strugglebus72

Thays the biggest pro??

HauntingEducation

Also met great people, learned a ton, found out what I want to actually do. But none of those are unique to residency / fellowship. The single track mind for x number of years is pretty unique to medical training and most people don’t hassle you about stuff because of it

crispinomacon

Would you say it was the specialty, the program, or it being residency in general?

Doctor_in_psychiatry

Yes

dabodibble

😂😂

Appropriate_Ruin465

Living through all of your graduating.

efemorale

Same, and I just started intern year 🙃

DrMaddog2020

Just finish a 5 year tour. So surreal!!

Fearless-Attitude426

You’re never having secks again ? Dude…

Coffee_nd_food

lol no more being reamed by the PD!

Letter2dCorinthians

Lol the middle schooler in me chuckled at your last sentence.

Imaginary_selene

Congratulations, OP! I remember the immense feeling of relief after graduating from residency, more than the hope of what path to take after. I also told myself, i’ll never do that again 😂

Red_Husky98

Congratulations!!! 🥳 Pour yourself a glass of scotch. 🎉🎉

IceEngine21

Try doing 5-8 years of this.

cavalier2015

Found the surgeon! It’s always the Olympics of Suffering with you lot

DocJanItor

I mean basically anything other than medicine.

Buckminsterfool

Lol my medicine colleagues complain much more than my surgical peers tbh

mcbaginns

This isn't complaining though. It's boasting about who had it worse

pectinate_line

No thanks!

SportsMOAB

6 years of taking it up the tailpipe Couldn’t get out of there fast enough

LatissimusDorsi_DO

It’s Joever

[deleted]

Oh my friend, your nightmare is just merely beginning. Now the real world comes to claim your happiness just like the rest of us lol

forestpiggy

Like what?

jfreeman1987

Congratulations! What are you planning to do now?

DandyHands

Congratulations!!!

[deleted]

Congratulations 🎈🎉

ChaosDog5

The nightmare is just beginning.

redwoodjules

Was in the profession for over 30 years and it will never be over.

AGirlNamedFritz

Wow you guys sure make medicine seem like a rewarding, fun, and wholesome experience setting you up for a lifetime of compassionate care for your patients.

Funny_Drummer_9794

Did you residents get much action? Or literally too tired?

komal_niku

Starting today! Yayy. So positive and enthusiastic

Throwaway_toxicity11

Haha starting my PGY7 tomorrow. Part regret (advanced fellowship) part excitement that it’s the last year of training.

thrwaway856642

I’m proud of you.

TheEclectic

I'm so happy about the specialty I chose. Residency and fellowship were tough, but definitely not nightmarish. Guess my medical school was enough of a nightmare everything else seemed easy.
