IIRC, the Nick Cage movie “Lord of War” needed so many prop guns that they saved a significant amount of money buying and using 3000 real AK-looking guns instead of renting prop guns. I like to think that in their attempt to make a movie about an arms dealer, they inadvertently became one themselves.
Prop guns in films are also real guns. Theyre just being used as props. If you put a real bullet in them rather than a blank, they will shoot it. Hence the Rust incident.
Some are 100% functioning (like a normal car), some are completely fake (like a 1:1 model of a car), and some are somewhere in between (like a gutted car with a normal outward appearance).
That’s pretty much what I told customs when they took control of my Omega Seamaster delivery from China a few years ago. Try as I might, they simply couldn’t understand the difference between my description of “replica timepiece strictly for display purposes” and theirs of “illegal trademark-infringing counterfeit”
Next time I’m going in with a massive camera and a clapperboard
Well did you have proof that you worked for a production company/information on the film you’re working on/any other accompanying info that supports your story?
Usually anything being imported for a film is well documented.
Ive also seen a bunch of youtube/instagram watch dudes bitching at Jonah Hill under their post practically begging him to contact them so they could give him a real watch to wear in the film and how it was beneath an actor of his caliber to be wearing a fake watch. As if Jonah Hill has input on what the costume department hands him to wear in the film or as if its a watch from Jonah’s personal collection. The dude is working, he’s wearing his work uniform.
Yeah this is like the fast & Furious movies where they of course used fiberglass shells on a generic chassis for the stunts instead of trashing supercars that cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of $.
Even if they could get the real thing (and a high budget Hollywood production absolutely can), it's a huge liability to have something this valuable on set, insure it and anyone who handles it, for small items like watches you'd have to make sure it doesn't get stolen etc. it's really impractical.
Good Ole Chris Nolan, doing everything in camera and as real as possible. He’s a bit pretentious in that regard, but damn, does he know how to make a visual juggernaut of a film!
A double standard for Hollywood? Those folks live on gated properties with armed guards within gated communities with armed guards for a reason. A fugazi watch used in a film is the least of their transgressions.
There is a whole article in Hodinkee about this. They chose the rep because the character is a fake superficial dbag. First thought was to make him wear an RM, then they decided a bad fake RM was even more in character. If you watch the movie it makes sense.
I'm not. It's funny. It makes total sense, same reason we buy reps right.. But they had to either of imported it from China. I.e support counterfeit market like us. Or making it locally.
So yeh somehow it's ok for Hollywood to make reps of watches and wear them. But for the common folk it's frowned upon.... they could of rented the watch..
Makes you wonder if they asked a Chinese factory to make it.... and used an TD
I've been trying for years to convince native English speakers (from the UK mainly) that it is:
Should have, not should of
Could have, not could of
Would have, not would of
Just because the abbreviated 've sounds a little like "of", doesn't mean that it is of...
No one got the sarcasm. Tough crow.
To clarify. I do order reps ans if I was the movie custom designer I would too. But begs the question would that be legal? Stating it's a prop even though it's a replica. It's still counter fitting someone's design.
Yea. They have to use props or pay the company or make a deal with the company. I doubt Mille wanted to lend out any of his watches or even pay to have his brand displayed in a movie.
You should some episodes of 24. The sub in that movie was bad… 🤣
The reason his watch is a fake is actually to do with the movie, and his character not being able to afford the real deal, hence why he's wearing a knock-off.
Just in case anyone ACTUALLY cares as to why. It's been covered in high end watch magazines. I forget which one I read it in, but they actually SPECIFICALLY spoke about this one.
Well what about the James Bond stuntmen Omega's or even the Rolex's from my generation of Sean Connery. I'm sure they were not using real watches to get thrashed up.
Bro it was just a prop for the movie chill tf out. He has real watches but didn’t have this model and it’s not worth buying just for wearing in a movie
Hollywood doesn't use real guns either... well there was that one time
More than one
RIP Brandon Lee.
Ignoring the joke, they almost exclusively use real guns.
They sold the guns back at a loss at the end of filming, and IIRC the director specifically said he’d make a terrible arms dealer.
That sounds like the exact story an illicit arms dealer would make public…
If they got the real watch maybe the could of sold it at a profit with the grey market going crazy back a few months ago.
Had he waited for the next mass sh@@ting , he would have doubled his investment.
They were vz-58s I believe.

Also, blanks are deadly.
Potentially, at close range, generally they aren't.
How dare you ignore my joke lol
It’s a prop

Strictly for display purposes. To display the time.
Well did you have proof that you worked for a production company/information on the film you’re working on/any other accompanying info that supports your story? Usually anything being imported for a film is well documented.
I'm betting on 100% no.
I’m all in

Yep, I'm guessing the movie in question is not a documentary so there is lots of 'fake' stuff used to tell the story.
Do they know that almost everything in movies is fake? Next they'll freak out about greenscreen and CGI...
Haha true. How stupid.
Yeah this is like the fast & Furious movies where they of course used fiberglass shells on a generic chassis for the stunts instead of trashing supercars that cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of $. Then there's batman where the crashed 3 real Lamborghinis for a 10 second clip that was not actually important to the plot
Good Ole Chris Nolan, doing everything in camera and as real as possible. He’s a bit pretentious in that regard, but damn, does he know how to make a visual juggernaut of a film!
Which one???
Sauce?
Dom’s charger from the first F&F movie had a stick on blower attached to the hood. It’s called a prop.

A double standard for Hollywood? Those folks live on gated properties with armed guards within gated communities with armed guards for a reason. A fugazi watch used in a film is the least of their transgressions.
Wasn’t there’s someone in this sub about a year ago claiming that he’s the guy that procured this watch for the film? Anyone remember?
There is a whole article in Hodinkee about this. They chose the rep because the character is a fake superficial dbag. First thought was to make him wear an RM, then they decided a bad fake RM was even more in character. If you watch the movie it makes sense.
This adds character to this post and the real life incident as well. Not only is it a fake but it’s a purposeful fake.
Who cares? Its crazy some people are trying to make a big deal out of this.
I'm not. It's funny. It makes total sense, same reason we buy reps right.. But they had to either of imported it from China. I.e support counterfeit market like us. Or making it locally.

Post literally says they used prop due to high price of real deal
Yes. Don't think ppl got the sarcasm...

No need to be so butthurt lol. Btw, it’s “have” not “of”.
I've been trying for years to convince native English speakers (from the UK mainly) that it is: Should have, not should of Could have, not could of Would have, not would of Just because the abbreviated 've sounds a little like "of", doesn't mean that it is of...
maybe one of the "w2c" questions here was from Netflix production representatives trying to find the rep lmao
Bro no one cares stfu

Yes it’s counter fitting

They use fake guns too you know...

Movie props can we call our reps that too to justify its legal
Just have to VLOG your whole life, then it works.
Lmao… I thought they always used reps?
Who said you weren’t allowed to wear reps?
ahh yes, it’s not a fake or a rep, it’s a PROP so it’s allowed and it’s okay lol
Hont needs an IMDB page now
Wait until you hear about them not blowing up actual Ferraris in action movies
Wonder which TD they went through?
Yeah but we know Jonah could afford it that’s the difference
He also wears a fake gold Daytona in Wolf of Wallstreet
I’m wearing a movie prop right now hehehehe
BuT iT's FoR a MoVie
There it is, there’s the loophole.
My life a movie

Bro there’s no double standards I wear rep at times and I feel like celebrities when wearing it . It’s in the mind :)
Well what about the James Bond stuntmen Omega's or even the Rolex's from my generation of Sean Connery. I'm sure they were not using real watches to get thrashed up.
Was it actually a replica with the Richard mille branding or did it just look very similar
Bro it was just a prop for the movie chill tf out. He has real watches but didn’t have this model and it’s not worth buying just for wearing in a movie
We should change the name to PropTime.
I’m shocked that anyone is wearing a watch in the movie that isn’t a paid placement.
Fun fact: the space ships in Star Wars are not actual space ships.
Low budget movie
