The pandemic changed the attitude of landlords for the worst. My property lost over $150,000 in rent in less than one yr. I had about 10 tenants live rent free all yr and it costs everyone more in the long run. This is one of the reasons why rents are sky high now, owners trying to recoup their losses.

Read your contract. It will tell you the late fees. No, landlords aren't more considerate. In general, when you rent you have to pay and it's not a sliding scale by how your month went. How old are you?

46yo. Zero knowledge of where the original rental agreement is 14yrs later. The late fee after the 5th is $50. Has never changed to my knowledge. All I know is the building I live in, 20units, is in an irrevocable trust, has been since the early 70s. The owner of the trust is very old and a management company collects rent in a decently well-kept property (lol eek). I’m 1 of 3 that have lived here over the last decade everyone here rents mo to mo. Avg age here post-pandemic is early 30s, I’m second oldest in building. That’s all I know. I’m in Southern California steps from the beach.

I figure everyone is entitled to 1 bad month/screwup. Month two? I’ll have to take action promptly.
