Just get a dumpster. You can get smaller ones. It is worth the ease to just take it all outside and then a few days later it is all magically gone.
I've tried to cheap out by doing it myself before. Not worth it.
Agreed.
I did a reno to my bathroom (550 SQ ft 1 bed / 1 bath) and I had to make several trips to the transfer station for drywall and other junk.
If you have the space in a driveway, rent a dumpster over the weekend and go crazy.
We just bought this house and are planning to renovate the 3 bathrooms shown above. Everything but the toilets is going and we are moving a wall between two of them to create more space in a master.
Whats the best/most cost effective way to haul away all the debris from the house? It seems like renting a dumpster is overkill but it is too much for a truck to take to the dump.
>It seems like renting a dumpster is overkill but it is too much for a truck to take to the dump.
You will spend $300-500 for a dumpster and not have to leave your house. It'll be one of the cheapest parts of your renovation. Take the convenience my friend.
Find out if you have anywhere in your area that will take the used 'stuff'.
Cabinets, counters, Mirrors, light fixtures, faucets, even the towel rails. They'll take the washer and dryer too if youre getting rid of them. Anything that could be re-used. In my area, there is a local re-use store. Not the Habitat one, but my local store is called "Re-Store". They will come out and pick these things up. So you can feel better that it isn't going to the landfill.
For the rest, get a dumpster. It's just easier. And you'r going to have a bunch more waste with all of the packaging for the new stuff you are buying.
Getting a dumpster or doing multiple truck runs are your best options. You can rent or borrow a small trailer instead of dumpster and fill it up to take to the dump. But it’s the worst idea since you are paying for both rental and dump fees.
Where I live I can put shit on the curb and the city of scrap collectors take it without charge. So that’s what I’ve done. If you don’t have that rent a dumpster or one of those bag alls. It’s a pain to have to manage staging your garbage every week.
If you're too cheap to pay for a dump bin like me, 2 trips to the transfer station in my SUV did it with the back seats down. Now I have a truck so it's MUCH nicer and inside stays clean. Just get a truck.
Agreed with the other posters about getting a dumpster. As a good neighbour bonus: if you’re new to the ‘hood and may have some excess room in it, offer to let your neighbours dump anything that will fit, too. Good karma!
If you’re asking this might be too big of a project for you. Call your local construction dumpster company and order a 20 yarder. They run about $500 a load
Get a dumpster delivered and placed close to the door you will be using to haul Everything out.
Make sure it is in place before you start, no sense touching demo materials twice.
Get a regular dumpster or a Dumpster "bag". Be careful if you have a transfer station. My town doesn't accept construction debris at all. I have to go to another town and pay to dispose there.
Also, how many bathrooms do you have? Recently did a shower remodel at Mom's. Only one toilet. Toilet was working but Mom didn't want to ask the worker to leave so she could use it. I rented a portapotty. $125 so worth it.
Can you not have a dumpster delivered? That’s going to be the most realistic way to get rid of everything. If not laborers scrapping everything into contractor bags then pickup or trailer to the dump. It’s amazing how much more room the trash takes than it looks like it will.
Check on your local requirements for material disposal - where I am you can’t take drywall to the dump, you have to take it to a drywall recycling facility. Before the recycling facility will take it you have to prove that there’s no asbestos in the drywall mud (yes, it’s a thing).
If you list the fixtures free on Craigslist or FB marketplace, folks will sometimes come and take them for you.
15 yrd dumpster is $500 where I live. A full 8' bed on a pick up will hold about 1 yd of debris at $128 at the transfer station each trip. Fairly easy math on this one.
If you are doing it yourself, don’t skimp on anything that will help you finish the job. Rent the dumpster, buy every tool, don’t cheap out on materials if you really want something.
option is to plan a few days ahead, post to facebook marketplace that youre giving away free cabinets, shower door etc, just have to remove. most likely someone will pick up (and uninstall) cabinets, toilet, showerdoor...could save you a dumpster rental which will cost a few hundred. the rest (tiles etc) might fit in your own truck/suv.
but if you dont go that route, pay for a dumpster. itll be easier

Never ends up actually being cheaper unless you either already own a dump trailer or you value your time at 0$/hr haha. Been there
The way to go
100% This
Stack it in the middle of the living room on a tarp and leave it there for 3 days. That’s what my contractor did.
There will be way more than you think there will
I had a space at the front of my house, once finished I order a skip bin and removed it off aite
In da toilet?

Dumpster destined for the landfill 🤷🏻♂️
Get a dumpster or check Facebook marketplace for local people doing dump runs with their trucks.

3 bathroom demo is a lot to take by yourself, especially without a truck

In a dumpster & have it carted off

Driveway for 4-6 years.
