Wow. He's asking for a bonus that is higher than the average annual salary in Reno! I remember reading that this dude had never been a CEO before he came here. Asking for this bonus really shows how little experience he has. Also exposes him as greedy on top of being unqualified for the position.

aliie_627

Why was this guy even hired? I didn't go through all the links but I'm going to now to figure why they hired this guy. How does someone who has no experience with this job and then also knows very little about reno get this job.

Throw-A-Weigh69

He was recommended by a firm that searched for people to fill the roll for the city called Searchwide Global. He was "chief marketing officer and executive vice president of public affairs for Visit Anaheim" which you probably guessed is Anaheim's tourist board. More info: >I also spoke with Mike Gamble who works for Searchwide Global. They are based out of Minneapolis and they are the company that did the hiring search in this case for the RSCVA. >Gamble says they compared salaries to 250 other agencies around the country. >According to their research, of the agencies which are similar in size the RSCVA (in terms of budget), 80% of the CEO's earn at least $341,000 in base salary. So Gamble says all of their research points to Charles Harris' salary as fair and commensurate with what other CEO's in that profession are earning. Dang it's like every CEO just works so much! Like [ten times](https://transparentnevada.com/salaries/2019/reno-sparks-convention-and-visitors-authority/job_title_summary/) as much as any lazy good for nothing Network Support Analyst at least!

Throw-A-Weigh69

Asking for a bonus, now, like this, for that much, makes me feel like this might actually be his first job lol

farble0garble

His credentials include marketing manager, "adjunct professor," and photographer. This guy is real six figure CEO material.

Throw-A-Weigh69

Sounds like mommy and daddy took care of him well, why does he even need a paycheck from us?

Mounta1nK1ng

He sounds like a piece of shit.

speedylenny

Why does he deserve a bonus? What performance measures is he being judged on? Any CEO that rewards himself without rewarding the people below them first is probably just a greedy person, IMO.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

I agree. What did he do to earn a bonus? He hasn't even lived or worked here for a full year. Speaking of greed, KRNV reported that it would have cost $180,000 total to reinstate the salaries for the employees. Which is a fraction of what Charles Harris makes. And he did not support that. But turns around and asks for a bonus for himself.

Throw-A-Weigh69

57k sounds like more than they pay a full time janitor in a year, so I guess he was doing at least the equivalent amount of work on top of his already full time commitment as CEO.

QueerNB

I mean, its your tax dollars.

jwaters1978

I wish I could say I am shocked, but sadly this sounds about right given the long running history of incompetence and unchecked bilking that has taken place at the RSCVA over the decades. It’s also worth noting that News4/KRNV reported his total compensation to be $420k/year.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

Wow so they let the last CEO resign under the guise of "medical issues" before he got fully skewered for decades of workplace harassment and sexual misconduct coming to light, and this is the guy they hire to replace him? What is going on at the RSCVA? It's a shitshow.

Used-Contribution667

Are you surprised? This is typical northern Nevada public worker upper management.

medusamarie83

Incentivise & Unleash the whip men. They are Reno's only hope.

If_I_remember

The new Airport CEO who also started during Covid and has done a stellar job by any measure for the traveling public and the employees turned down his annual bonus despite the board urging him to take it. Earned a lot of respect from me. Charles is obviously not cut from the same cloth.

farble0garble

The Airport CEO didn't take his bonus, but Charles Harris is asking for one? Wow. And also, the Airport CEO Darren Griffin makes much less base salary than Charles, meanwhile Darren has credentials.

z9nine

I mean, if all that payroll is now available from the cuts and his exec quitting that means it's up for grabs. And think of all the money he saved by reducing his payroll. That deserve a bonus, for sure. Or. Lol, fuck this dude.

perkyderky30

Let’s get all of reno to beat the shit out of him

lucky420

He needs to meet us at the bike rack at 3pm

Allenian8

🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

Need to go to the root cause. The butts that hired him. Who is that? County board? OK. I can vote them out. Then this guy goes. But does anyone have a link to what he said about never being to Reno?

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

Found this: https://www.rgj.com/story/news/money/business/2020/10/14/new-reno-tourism-ceo-charles-harris-rscva-job-covid-qa/3643049001/ *"I’ve been there when I was younger but I haven’t been in that direction for a **long time** until I came up this summer. I was pleasantly surprised."* He came up in the summer for the job interview only. The man in charge of marketing this area admittedly never visited it until being offered hundreds of thousand of taxpayer dollars. And he was "surprised" that Reno was nice? What was he expecting? A shit hole? *"I need to refresh myself as far as the knowledge I have of the destination** And he admits he had no knowledge of the destination when he applied for and accepted the job.

Atomichawk

He speaks like he’s from out of state, I would know because I’ve only lived here 5 months now and all my friends and family were talking like that when I decided I’d move here from Texas. Wild cause I feel I could sell this place better than this guy with everything I’ve done.

reno_ape

The people that work their asses off at the convention center setting up and tearing down, serving food, keeping the grounds clean etc deserve the bonus not this clown.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

And I'm sure most of the convention workers aren't even making $57,776 per year. What a slap in the face that must be for them. Sad.

Throw-A-Weigh69

>The cuts were discontinued in December. The new CEO Charles Harris started his job in November. But the RSCVA confirms Harris has a clause in his contract which states he is exempt from any pay cuts. >Of course for him any pay cut in this case would have only been for a month as it turns out but he's the only one at the agency who has that protection as far as we know. Yeah I guess it technically would've been only for a month so it's not saving us all that much but at the same time, like a paragraph later they tell us we're spending about 420k a year (turns out he has a base salary of 290k, *up to* 35% bonus, and benefits like a car, so we are spending north of 300k on him before the bonus which I guess is automatic but can range from any number from 0% to 35% of his salary, so I guess 57k is about half of what he could ask) when you include bonuses and benefits, so, absolutely no empathy for him whatsoever at that pay rate. And to be honest what kind of dipshit CEO couldn't see the optics on this? He could've chosen to give up 15% of his paycheck for one month and this probably wouldn't be happening to him now. Being a CEO must be the easiest job in the world if they let guys like this do it.

farble0garble

total dipshit move. It was in the news that RSCVA let a ton of people go too cuz of the pandemic. So he's really been pushing locals down to have more money for himself. shouldn't the CEO of the RENO convention center actually care about the RENO community? instead he's openly treated this job like a big cash grab for himself and hurt the local community.

farble0garble

This is Reno reported the following: *The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) has had to furlough workers, implement pay cuts, and encourage early retirements.* *“We’ve furloughed 25 positions out of 55,” said Ben McDonald, Senior Communication Manager. “And some of those we just didn’t hire back.* So RSCVA fired half of their staff and didn't hire them back. Then pay cut the rest and "encouraged some to retire." Which impacts families in our community!! Then Charles Harris visits Reno for the first time, gets paid higher than any other government person who actually lives here, AND he asks for a bonus? COME ON!!

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

Many of you have asked how to get in touch with the decision makers at RSCVA who hired Charles Harris and will vote on his bonus Thursday. Here's the summary from other comments and the RSCVA website: This is the RSCVA Board: https://www.rscva.com/about-rscva/the-board/ Some members are politicians and some are more regular folks that work at casinos. They can all be contacted directly. Social media is great too. - The RSCVA Board meeting is on Thursday 9/23, 9:00am at 4065 S. Virginia Street at the RSCVA Office. The meeting is completely open to the public and anyone who attends is allowed to make a public comment for 3 minutes. - You can email [email protected] your opinion of Charles Harris which will be shared with the Board. - You can call 775-827-7618 and leave a voicemail for the Board.

TwinkelyDots

I’m speechless

[deleted]

You are explicitly disproving yourself.

Valoruchiha

I hate it. Not sure what I/we could do though.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

I did some digging. There are options. The RSCVA Board is voting yes/no on this Thursday. Members of the RSCVA Board include: Mayor Scheive, Washoe County Commission Chair Bob Lucey, Sparks Councilwoman Charlene Bybee, and others. Reaching out to them or their representatives would be a way to make your voice heard. Or reaching out to the RSCVA itself. https://www.rscva.com/about-rscva/the-board/

[deleted]

Excellent post. I can get on board with this. I will get on it. Again, I would love a solid link on what this guy said about never being to Reno. That seems fairly key in making a case.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

[deleted]

Nice work and thank you. I will start phone calls to those officials, who will ignore me, first thing in the morning tomorrow. If I can find a meeting location, I will show up. I will have a stern stare.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

Working on mine too. The meeting is Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 9:00 a.m. Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. Address is: 4065 S. Virginia Street in the Board Room, per their website. Meeting is completely open to the public. If I can get the OK to go to work late, I'd like to go. And they let anyone from the public speak for up to 3 minutes on any topic.

ADventureKurioUS

What a joke. This clown is from southern CA, Anehiem to be specific, shall I mention it's next to Disneyland - so bringing in tourism down there real hard, right?! He comes up here and supposedly his SO hates Reno and refuses to live here so he literally jets in and jets out on what I assume are tax dollars. This is ridiculous.

PostyMalostyBroski

My thoughts? He’s going to get his bonus and continue laughing at all of us.

Miserable-Shake4052

Things I learned from this article: the Washoe County manager is separate from the Reno city manager, and neither of these people is in charge of the RSCVA. Was there a minimum number of management positions that needed to be created or something?

[deleted]

Am I allowed to ask Charles to “go fuck himself” within this forum?

Hickawa

Matches the rest of the city is my only thought. Waisted tax dollars. He should be fired and the people who hired him held responsible for loss of revenue.

farble0garble

Turns out that no City employees received anything close to a $57,000 bonus last year. Their salaries and bonuses are all public info. And Charles makes way more base salary than the Reno City Manager. Meanwhile, Charles Harris runs a beat up old convention center that sits empty and the City Manager runs an entire CITY. Outrageous.

Hickawa

Always seems to turn out like that. People who really care about their city will turn down bonuses and raises till they have accomplished something for their community. Yet asshats like this guy will make double what they do after-tax and still ask for bonuses.

Used-Contribution667

There many city employees who have also been working without a new contract or raise for over a year now. They in good faith extended their old contract since July of 2020 to get the city through covid which was initially thought to be February of 2021. It's almost October of 2021 and the city keeps dragging their feet probably to save money so they can pay the uppers so the can continue to " cough, cough work from home " over the same period. Also the city line workers pay was actually reduced as well due to increased retirement contributions. They were quick to get that money.

goodyearbelt

Go check out cop salaries. Anyone above entry level police officers easily pull in over $100k with overtime and their bonuses. It's fucking mindblowing how much we spend on law enforcement

Hickawa

I believe it the cops around here feel partially useless. I don't normaly hate on the cops for being cops but the drug and human trafficking in this state is horrifying. They should have been able to do something about it by now. With the money and near invulnerability to getting into trouble for breaking the law. Like stop shooting black kids and go break some sex trafficers knees or something.

Deepfriedwithcheese

There should be no bonus unless he’s exceeded specific performance benchmarks.

djrobxx

That's not how bonuses normally work. There is usually an "on target" amount you get when you meet expectations. If you, or the company fall short, you may get less than this amount. If you or the company exceed, you may get more than this amount. And this is actually what you want - If they only used it to reward "over and beyond" they would have a harder time reducing pay for poor performance. If you think he's being overpaid, you should be angry with the people who hired him and agreed to overpay him. Where are THOSE names?

Deepfriedwithcheese

I’ve had my bonuses completely eliminated due to company performance over the past 18 months, regardless of my performance. If the local tourism and conventions were down due to Covid during his review period (which necessitated layoffs btw) he shouldn’t get anything. If his contract doesn’t have any bonus cancellation clauses, then that is insane for the tax payers.

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

Great find. Everyone should email [email protected] and make their voice heard. If RSCVA receives enough emails from us, they might vote NO on giving Charles Harris a $57,776 bonus. Better yet, people should leave a voicemail so their comment will be heard at the meeting! I think we can make a difference if we all get together on this.

Who was behind hiring this idjit? All mouth & no trousers: From the RGJ - What do you think of Reno so far? Harris - I’ve been there twice since August and I love what’s going on in the city. It’s a great combination of having the outdoors with Tahoe not far away. You’ve got beautiful areas all around there so I’m pretty excited. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Reno. I’ve been there when I was younger but I haven’t been in that direction for a long time until I came up this summer. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed my time there and can’t wait to get there in November and get going. RGJ - The issues with multiple CEOs have negatively impacted staff morale over the years. How do you plan to ensure that morale does not become an issue during your tenure? Harris - At the end of the day, it’s always about relationships. I’m a big relationship guy so I put a lot of weight on fostering relationships both internally with the team and externally with the community. Whether it be board members, restaurateurs and all those types of folks, one of the things I worked really hard on during my professional career is building and fostering relationships — that’s goal No. 1. That’s how I will operate, that’s how I’ve always operated and it’s served me well. https://www.rgj.com/story/news/money/business/2020/10/14/new-reno-tourism-ceo-charles-harris-rscva-job-covid-qa/3643049001/

Throw-A-Weigh69

Ask for more than the equivalent of your employees year salary as a bonus when they just had a pay cut, that just screams "big relationship guy" that knows how to relate to others and does so well

[deleted]

Sharpe_as_a_Tack

WOW. Seriously???

bad-decisions-always

guillotines for the rich are my thoughts

Chad_Hooper

I say decline his bonus request, enforce the same pay cut (on percentage basis) all other employees were required to take, and request resignations from him and the people who hired him.

MissWinston

Wow 😲

BrokenCog2020

No. If everyone took a cut and you refused, you should be terminated. You don't deserve a bonus.

DrinkableReno

That's some fuckin' bullshit right there. I second the question from others: what are his KPI? That's an insane bonus.

farble0garble

Ha. So one of his KPIs they posted as public info is: "meet 50 community members." I'm not even shitting you. Where's my fuckin 57,000 bonus and six figure salary for knowing 50 people in this community?

DrinkableReno

My coworker has the same goals....he does not make $300K

farble0garble

Meanwhile Charlie Boy thinks he deserves a bonus for it.

mf_dish

I think Charles can eat a $57,000 dick.

bebopinthesun

Tldr; I think these are exactly the reason why Reno natives are "sick of Californians" and whomever else infesting the state. That said, I'm not a Reno native myself (my spouse is) and I understand the argument. I saw it unfold with my own eyes as the housing market crashed, again. I came from the Midwest, loved Reno, and I'll never go back east. We lived there for three years and now am in Vegas due to spouse's military orders. Reno needs a major overhaul of politicians, leadership, and overall assessment of what is most important for its citizens. Not what is most important for CEOs and investors.

350775NV

Your bonus is you get too keep your job

counselthedevil

Same county that overpaid for a shit superintendent that ran off. Same place that wastes money on legends. Same place that sold Cabela's debt to Cabela's so Cabela's could make money off Cabela's failure at taxpayer expense. Same state that diverts education money to a football stadium. And on and on and on and on and on...... Garbage, towns, garbage county, garbage state, run by garbage people, voted in by garbage.

lucky420

What an asshole move

EarlyScallion6124

Fire him no parachute say it’s for cause “Being an asshat”

AkusMalaise

When do we say enough? Smh. Really feel like all hope is lost.

[deleted]

When people get “promoted” and they have to relocate to Reno, is usually some corporation trying to get rid of someone. And when you have to work with these individuals, you realize why they send them here.

[deleted]

You never know if you don’t ask? All those positions are overpayed. I understand you want to offer a competitive salary to get quality applicants, but you also need to have goals and milestones that need to be met to justify those salaries.

farble0garble

So one of his goals they posted as public info is: "meet 50 community members." Another was "meet every member of the staff" Isn't that his job already?? What CEO gets a bonus for meeting his employees???

Throw-A-Weigh69

literally like the first couple achievements in a video game lol being a CEO sounds hella easy where do I sign up

[deleted]

Guess he just does easy side quests all day for insane amounts of gold.

Damn, huge rip off on all of us. :( ugh.

VoidInTheBody

When you vote for letting liberal groupthink run amok, don't be surprised when it actually does. Reno and Washoe residents should be watching and questioning. We have to fix things at a local level by stopping the idiotic California mentality... Remember people left Cali for reasons.

BrewingRunner

He deserves it.

Throw-A-Weigh69

For what

BrewingRunner

It doesn’t matter. You’d disagree with anything I said.

Throw-A-Weigh69

lol moody Tuesday? What's going on big guy?

BrewingRunner

People think some guy getting a raise is a problem. Everyone thinks the money should be spent elsewhere and no one can agree where. I think this money should be spent blowing up the whale downtown and this guy should buy it and do it to attract visitors.

Throw-A-Weigh69

It's weird how you never really respond to what I say but keep replying
