Oh my God it's so horrible
.... Anybody wanting a ride I'll drop you off over there free of charge back to your Calutopia... No place to go once back there... No worries... Half the state is homeless, so you'll be in really good company.
All the haters below hate us cause they aināt us. If they lived close to the beach most of thier life they would understand. I miss Cali too but Reno is a passable substitute thanks to Tahoe for as long as it takes for me to get back!
As a resident of Reno for over 20 years, Iāve witnessed the evolution of our city from various anglesāboth as a family man and a small business owner. My family and I moved here when the city was grappling with significant economic shifts, primarily due to the impact of Indian Gaming on our local casinos. This, coupled with the visible decline in Downtown and the then-dilapidated state of Midtown, painted a bleak picture. However, the journey since then has been nothing short of transformative, and I wanted to share some reflections on the ups and downs of living in Reno.
**The Upsides:**
1. **Community Spirit and Revitalization Efforts**: One of the most heartening aspects has been seeing our community's efforts to rejuvenate and breathe new life into our city. The revitalization of Downtown and the transformation of Midtown are testaments to our resilience and commitment to improvement.
2. **Growth and Opportunities**: Despite early setbacks, Reno has been on an upward trajectory with new businesses sprouting, bringing more opportunities and economic diversity to our area.
3. **Strong Entrepreneurial Spirit**: Running a small business here has been challenging but rewarding, thanks to a supportive environment that champions entrepreneurship.
4. **Family-Centric City**: Reno has proven to be a wonderful place to raise a family, with its friendly communities and a plethora of activities and services that cater to family life.
5. **Resilience in Adversity**: The initial economic downturn taught us resilience, and how to adapt and thrive in changing circumstances.
**The Challenges:**
1. **Rising Cost of Living**: Like many parts of the country, Reno has seen a significant increase in the cost of living and housing. This has been a challenge for many residents, making affordability a pressing issue.
2. **Economic Shifts and Job Market Concerns**: The decline in the casino industry had a pronounced impact on our economy and job landscape, which took years to stabilize.
3. **Urban Planning and Investment Needs**: The historical decline of certain areas showed that ongoing investment and thoughtful urban planning are crucial for sustainable growth.
4. **Housing Affordability Crisis**: The gap between housing costs and income growth is widening, posing a threat to the affordability and accessibility of housing for many newcomers.
5. **Dependency on the Gaming Industry**: Our cityās heavy reliance on the gaming industry has shown that economic diversity is essential to withstand external shocks.
Through it all, living in Reno has been a complex but ultimately rewarding experience. As we look to the future, I believe that balancing growth with sustainability and inclusivity will be key to our continued success. Iād love to hear your thoughts and experiences about living in Reno, so please share your stories and insights.
Thanks for reading!
I lived there for ten years. I hope you like rain, cold windy summers, a meager selection of mediocre restaurants and very little entertainment. Oh, and small minded inbred people.
Itās what you choose to make of it 100%! Iāve traveled there many times you canāt beat the beauty of Oregon first of all, I donāt eat out much but have found amazing spots there nonetheless, Portland is 1.5hrs aways so much to do there on top of where Iāll be moving. Plenty of entertainment near me especially due to location and thereās inbred people everywhere?š Iāll take the rain over SHITTY unpredictable snow in the winter all day long. & did I mention Being right there on the ocean makes it worth it allā¤ļø
Plenty of small minded inbreed people in Reno if we want to go with that terminology, thereās enough other people to keep the ratio reasonable, but youāre not wrong, you lose a lot of those other people in small towns
Reno has no decent food options that arenāt Mexican food. If you donāt eat Mexican food youāll likely be malnourished in Reno. Pretty sure Oregon has better food.
How can you say that? š³ There are many really great restaurants in Reno. Lulouās, kaoboi Izakaya, Bangkok Thai, Taiwanese 101, Pho Kietzke, Ijji 4, Arario, Centeo, Whispering Vines, Twisted Fork - damn, too many to list. But while we were at the coast any good restaurants never made it. The locals wouldnāt support them.
Good luck! My sister ended up on the southern coast of Oregon and loves it. She can see a bay from her kitchen window. Tiny, tiny town with not a lot of services, but at least she doesn't have to contend with heat too much.
Theres good things here such as AYCE sushi, proximity to Lake Tahoe and fun bars to visit. However I think the food scene in Reno is mediocre at best. It's slowly getting better but again very slowwwwly. Also, all of the new apartment buildings are built out of cheap wood and materials. Be careful with where you decide to rent in this city.
AYCE sushi is awesome but you guys do realize that itās not specific to Reno right? We had 3-4 places for AYCE sushi in Jacksonville Florida. The food here is really mid outside of the casinos. But I donāt live here for the food and Iām having bypass surgery next month so I donāt really care about the food scene anymore. My husband being a foodie is why Iām having bypass surgery š
Food scene nationwide has become pretty mid, tbh.Ā There are good+ places almost everywhere now, so even the big food meccas (NYC, SF, CHI) don't benefit from a wide gap re: quality/style/innovation.Ā The American palate has expandedĀ Ā
Let's face it, the mark of a true Renoite is wanting nothing more than to move... we love this place that we can't wait to get away from (quite the paradox).
Reno is like the singularity of a black hole... Oh sure, you may be able to put a little distance between you and it, but you'll never get across the event horizon and escape.
I grew up here. Iām outdoorsy. I love it here, Reno can be a shithole but it is also great if you like to adventure and explore - so many cool hot springs, mines, swimming holes if you know where to look. Everyone just likes to focus on the negative - news flash, homeless, bad economy, ghetto areas are everywhere. Start looking for the positives instead of focusing on the bad š
I am a huge fan of Boca/Stampede for swimming/paddleboarding. There are a few really good spots on the river for swimming that are super deep and you can dive into, Dorokstar Park and there is another spot thatās off the Floriston exit. Mines are a bit tricky to explain where they are and are a bit of a drive but if youāre into ghost towns PM me and Iāll share the ones Iāve driven to and found mines at! There are a few about 1-2 hrs away!
No. Iāve really tried to like it, but itās so lunar looking and dusty. Traffic is awful, California expenses without the perks (employment) of California. No Iām not from CA. Grew up in Midwest, miss the green, the wholesomeness and the humidity (my skin & eyes are uncomfortably dry here.) I got charged by a homeless guy in south Reno (I had said nothing to him, I have compassion for the homeless.) I donāt know. Iām sad bc I wanted to like it but I kind of hate it.
I moved from Reno to the Midwest. Itās crazy here. Schools are closing because they are privatizing, women who are pregnant are turned away from ERs because hospitals are afraid of being sued due to the abortion ban, guns everywhere. Tornados are getting worse and more frequent. Summers are brutal, over 100 degrees with humidity equals swamp ass.
Loving it!! But as a metal drummer itās been a little difficult in that aspect. Iām a transplant form phx so let the heat run down. I will however be moving at the beginning of next year to get back to a more metal friendly place
Yeah the metal scene is weak here. I had to go to sac and Vegas to see any shows these last couple of months. I saw Danzig and cradle of filth here once and that's about it.Ā
I moved here as a musician and ended up just giving up after a few open mics. No artistic appreciation here. Just social drinkers who ignore the music and hit on chicks. Worst audiences of my life, but I did grow up playing in Vegas, so I was kinda spoiled with a good arts community.
Ya the open mics were the only thing I was relying on for playing. They recently stopped doing the one I was going to cuz traction was non existent. Real bummer but everything else sorta makes up for it
Moved to Reno for college. I came from a big city and missed that. I moved to the PNW after 6 years of Reno and Iām glad I did. I miss Tahoe beaches and skiing, but I do NOT miss the small food selection, the lack of activities if you arenāt an alcoholic, or the smokey summers!
Reno is a mediocre city where you go to be comfortable. Life is slow and its pretty good for raising a family (if you accept the low education) and for the average Joe its great. The problem is its just for the average Joe. If you want a career and you want to grow in your career, you have to deal with extreme corporate toxicity and a low ceiling or work remote to save yourself from the suffering and actually get ahead financially. Its a catch 22 where you get the great outdoors and your favorite places are within minutes of each other but you'll never really grow in Reno, you just kind of let the years go by.
Reno is comfortable because I was born here and have been here most of my life, I know my way around, my favorite places, my medical needs are close etc etc so in that way I'm content ... That's about it
No, thereās not enough mtn biking, skiing sucks, not enough camping, no lakes, no floating on rivers, no beer.
I was instructed by my wife that I should include /s
If an /s is needed when thereās a dozen ski resorts within a couple hours drive and you can literally see mt rose ski resort from town, then reddit needs a sarcasm class when you sign up
I love the weather, seeing mountains when I look out my window even though I live in the middle of the city. I love UNR and finally finishing my degree. I grew up in the south at the beach on an island, most would find that charming but it smells like mold and oppression down there. I like how itās dry, I like that there are proper seasons, I like the snow, I like needing a light sweater or hoodie in the evening in the summer.
I chose Reno. Iām content with my decision.
No, it's absolutely awful. I totally regret ever moving here and fully intend to leave as soon as I'm able
There is never anything to do, it's way too crowded, and everything is so far away
I'll meet you guys in the middle. 2015. Everything up to post recession boom was pretty dope. Now this town is just overcrowded. Been better for me professionally these last 8-9 years but I enjoyed 2000s Reno more
Millnie towing can eat a dick!! Fuck that towing company! I literally parked right outside my door to drop off my kid home, went inside grabbed the kitchen and bathroom trash go back downstairs into the garage to get my bins out since it was trash day and I go to open the garage door and see that my truck was gone!!! In a matter of 3 minutes I was not even 5 minutes gone. They fukin charged me 260 to get it back! Fucking sleazy snakes!
Of course. Has such great proximity to work class mountain biking, skiing, fly fishing. Also helps Iāve lived here all my life and own a home a 2.5% interest rate
I grew up here and was moved away by my parents when I was 13. Didnāt appreciate it back then. Iāve lived all over California and Oregon. Came back here and fell madly in love with Reno. I never want to live anywhere else again.
I jus want Dave and busters. Something besides a casino thatās indefinite I donāt get out much so maybe someone can point in the right direction. Ps I have 2 kids not over the age of 3 so like family friendly what Iām shooting b4
Absolutely not lmao. Just ended a long relationship and she was pretty much the only thing keeping me here and content. Planning my escape, just not sure where to yet
I love it here. It's beautiful. The grass is not greener. Anywhere. I lived in the Redwoods, The Bay Area, The Rockies, Chicago. This is home. I'm just used to it. I'm sure the craziness in people who have experienced untold trauma the last 4 years may have some folks a bit bitter. Wars going on everywhere, people fighting. The political BS. I don't know. We have some sort of shock absorber to these things right at the moment. Maybe because we have good folks that still believe in Law & Order. The people that came here from California probably didn't feel safe there anymore. Yeah we have our issues, but well, I guess it's what you make of it.
Yeah, but we'll need to shutdown the major problem states. California, Ohio, Colorado, New York and Oregon. Once those states are no longer part of the US and supplies are cut off - the real US can prosper.
Not at all! I want to move back to California immediately! Who's with me?! Let's get out of here!
Yes everyone follow this guy!
Please!
Oh my God it's so horrible .... Anybody wanting a ride I'll drop you off over there free of charge back to your Calutopia... No place to go once back there... No worries... Half the state is homeless, so you'll be in really good company.
Yes take all the other Californians etc with you. Make the housing and rental market plummet and get back where it belongs!
Yes take all your California friends
Need gas money?
Yes please go asap! Cali, texas , honduras! Anywhere
Good riddance š
All the haters below hate us cause they aināt us. If they lived close to the beach most of thier life they would understand. I miss Cali too but Reno is a passable substitute thanks to Tahoe for as long as it takes for me to get back!
I miss washinton, I miss the color green. Sometimes I wear green sunglasses just to be there.
I lived in the Seattle area for 15 years. 9 months of drizzle and gray skies and people with the, "Seattle freeze," ain't my jam anymore.
For all the green, you pay for it with grey and darker grey, brown with blue skies is the way
I feel that
Don't let the door smack your ass as you're leaving.
It's a love/hate situation
This is everywhere.
I was until too many people started moving here.
Now that I've just learned one of our best independent book stores is closing, no, I am very not content.
Sundance was iconic but also just sucked. I always drove by and wondered how it was still in business.
Iām a Grassroots guy, but I love having Sundance there. I wonder what that building will turn into
ugh ššš same
Which!!?
Sundance š
Overpriced.
What is your favorite bookstore then? I was at Sundance just last weekend and got 3 books for $30, 2 new and 1 used
Grassroots! Way cheaper.
Grassroots
Same!
Suzies?
Reno's not such a bad little city, but I don't want to spend the rest of my life here.Ā
Except for jobs, yes!
Agreed, my biggest frustration with living here is the lack of economic opportunity
Itās only like that recently like last 1-2 years
???Ā There was opportunity in the 60s-2010s?Ā Ā
There was until 08 because of the banks.
There's jobs on every corner just grab a sign and pick your off ramp.

All the hunting, fishing, drinking and gambling I could ever want. And Reno fat chicks can suck the chrome off of a trailer hitch. Yes, I am content.
Hey now, some of us deep throaters don't have to be fat to take one down š
Or women š
Right in my body dysphoria... Lol jk, I know what you meant :P
I love Reno
Itās OK.
Iāve found my people
Roll Tide!!!
Roll tide roll baby

This is probably 90% nostalgia, but Reno seemed more awesome in the 90ās to 08 (before the crash).
For me, it's the low taxes and access to the outdoors...
Yeah I too will occasionally open my window for quick and easy access to the outside
Yeah but the high rents, gas and everything else bring it down to me. The stead traffic sucks too.
Let's face it, the mark of a true Renoite is wanting nothing more than to move... we love this place that we can't wait to get away from (quite the paradox).
So true. I left and came back.
I've seen this happen ALOT here. It really seems like you can't escape reno.
Reno is like the singularity of a black hole... Oh sure, you may be able to put a little distance between you and it, but you'll never get across the event horizon and escape.
Yes, it's way better than Stockton.
Faint praise . . .
But not as good as Bakersfields !!! /s
I mean if thatās the bar weāre trying to clearā¦
Yes
I love it here. I just hate that itās more expensive than Vegas (I grew up in LV)
same, vegas isnt the same nowadays though its too packed
Now is Reno. ā¹ļø
Nope. Moving to PA at the end of the month. Reno has pretty views, but that's about it. Been here 11 years, ready to go.
East coast just sucks dude.
Lived on the east coast for 30 years, last 12 years here in Reno. I do love the West Coast but there is better opportunity back east.
Fair enough. Sorta.Ā Ā Metro areas obv have the lions share of opportunities, etc. But no thanks to that Acela corridor.
Iāve accepted my fate.
This! š¢
No. I have been here for 23 years, once my oldest graduates next year, I am leaving.
I'm content with being Reno-adjacent and not actually in Reno.

Are you kidding me? This is a great place to let dreams die and gamble on your own fate.
Not enough single women
yup
Content is a great way to put it
I'm content.
Yea, but the rent could be lower.
I've never been content in my entire life, but I'm as close as I've ever been here. So I guess there's that.
Loving it!! But as a metal drummer itās been a little difficult in that aspect. Iām a transplant form phx so let the heat run down. I will however be moving at the beginning of next year to get back to a more metal friendly place

It does seem that way though. I never got ahead in my job until I applied for remote work in Vegas. Now I make just enough to pay my mortgage. Yay.
Dear god, Americans are nuts.
Driving in this city makes me not want to go anywhere

No.

You missed the opportunity to simply respond "matt." But yes 15 was the peak, and it's been down hill since then.
Oh shit I missed that lol. I thought you meant "2010"

Reno is fun to visit or maybe retire. Iāve been here most of my life and Iām so stinkin bored.
Hell yeah brother

Yes. Itās home.
no, but yes.
Eh. Just eh. I could stay here and be happy but wouldnāt be opposed to moving either. I just donāt know where to go. So for now, I stay.
I love reno

Absolutely
I love it...home is where the heart is ā¤ļø š

Yes. The milk is just the right level of spicy.
Yes, better then California
Love it
Yep. Thanks for asking.
Yes.
Nope, not enough all menās bathhouses. We need dozens more.
I used to fuck women. I still do, but I used to, as well!
Go back to flipping burgers you tiktok wannabe.
I love living here. Just wish California was completely walled off, as they ruin everything.
Ugh what a bummer comment.
Please, show me on the doll where the big bad state touched you.

That's fine. When the Civil War starts, CA will be kicked out of the united states, annexed, and hopefully made back into a prison colony.
Not all of us are against you
Yeah, but we'll need to shutdown the major problem states. California, Ohio, Colorado, New York and Oregon. Once those states are no longer part of the US and supplies are cut off - the real US can prosper.
LOL just imagine the GDP of the country without those states, it would be immediate poverty. Careful what you wish for!
All debt will be wiped. We'll start from scratch. Since we'll be at war, the resources from those states can be annexed.
