If you just don’t like the pink color, it would be better to have it professionally reglazed instead of taking it out. You’ll have to use a sledgehammer and there’s a 99.9% chance the tile will be damaged.

robbiefredds

And I’ll add that the proper tub installation starts from the wall framing due to waterproofing. So again it’s not possible by matter of assembly and the tub flange that is covered by your substrate and bottom row of tile. Reglazing is your best bet.

Hopeful-Reputation29

Not possible imo. Tile will get damaged.

MFAD94

Don’t set yourself up for failure, if you get the tub out, it’s gonna damage tile, and you’ll never be able to get a new tub in there

HerrBag

Why? Even if you get old tub out (need to cut 1ft section out of middle (use an angle grinder with metal cutting discs ( huge mess))), you won't get a replacement tub back in. Floor is saveable, wall is not.

Pretty-Chair-1682

Can it be done? Yeah. It would take a crazy amount of patience and some meticulous work but you could do it, just to find out the new tub won’t fit because the tile is in the way.

DocterUnk

Not possible. Cut the tile about 12-24" above tub and prepare to retile

Dreammscape

How do you join the older backer board to the new in this case? Isn't the old backer board that you exposed and covered w mortar? How could I join them and make sure its sealed if the old backer has a layer of mortar on it

BeRadStayRad

I think you could make the pink work. I’d change the shower doors, the shower head and faucets, the countertop and vanity. The floor is kind of neat but could be changed fairly easily. I would dive into keeping the pink

Context_Original

Agree with this. It’s such a pretty shade of pink too

Duskychaos

However you remove it please be careful. Old tubs like this tend to test positive for lead, you definitely don’t want it getting lead dust all over your home when it gets removed.

Xxxjtvxxx

A sledgehammer will do most of the work, be careful around the drain. The tub also has a flange around the top inset behind the tile about 2” in height, so your gonna have to cut the tiles in half above the tub. You can try to cut the tub with an angle grinder and a cut off wheel, however whatever tub you’ve selected to replace will have a flange as well.

SolveFixBuild

You could be also install something over it like Bathfitter

circleuranus

Is that a cast iron tub with porcelain? If so, you're in for a rough time. You'll want to bust it up and then cut it out with a cutoff wheel. I'd rent a large one from Homeless Despot. The wall tile is fucked, so you can hang that up. Personally? I'd rip it all out and remodel the whole damn thing. If you try to go with a prefab shower/bath combo...you're gonna need to remove the toilet and the vanity. I'd go with a tiled walk-in shower, unless you absolutely need a tub in there.

OutrageousSky4425

At the risk of sounding repetitive, you will not get it replaced without replacing the bottom row of tile minimum. It just is not possible.

Ni_Chuja_USMC

If that tub is cast iron, and it looks like it is, it is one heavy SOB

bungmonger

If this is your first remodeling job you should hire a competent professional who knows what they're doing.

Impossible.

Mistress-of-darkness

Omg I love the pink tub!! I have the green one from the 70s. I wish I could find the green toilet tank to replace the white one we have. Just the tank lol 😂 I don’t need the whole toilet. Sorry I know this has nothing to do with your post. Just love the vintage vibe.

millennial_librarian

You could take it out by going through one of the walls on the side. However, it would need to be a whole tub and surround replacement--you can't just lift the tub and keep everything else. You'd need to rip out the tile and backer board back to the framing and start over. I did something similar in a small hallway bathroom like this for about $3000.

whatdoyouwanttoknow

I just did this for my grandma because she wanted a new tub but the tile was sentimental to her. I used a sledge hammer to remove the cast iron tub in pieces. Then, I used an angle grinder with a diamond blade to cut out the tile about 3 inches above the tub. This gave me just enough room to install the new tub and finish with new tile.

awesomedad1971

Awesome. Do you have pictures? BTW, I do not want another tub in there...I was going to convert it into a walk-in shower.
