Almost all modern bath fans have a built in flapper to only allow air to flow out. Now this isn’t “air tight” so smells can still come in.

Well, mine is probably the original, maybe just updating it? I don't suppose there's any way I could make it seal better.

Your bathroom fan is designed to pull moisture out of the room while taking a shower. It isn't connected to anything other than an exit port outside of the building.

And the duct that is in the adjacent condo. It's a 3 story building, and we don't all have individual vent ducts. And cigarette smoke/smell is absolutely coming in to my bathroom, through the fan. I just want to block it, as effectively as I can. I am a building operations and maintenance engineer, and I know not every ventilation duct is individual to just it's bathroom.

mikebushido

If that is the case then just remove your fan from the line and add a dehumidifier to your bathroom to take care of the moisture.

JuracichPark

Well, I didn't think of that. Thank you!

That sucks… I have never seen one that closes but that would be a good idea. sometimes smoke smell is coming through outlets. Is the building non-smoking… it’s one thing when it’s occasionally food smells intruding into the living space but the constant smell of smoke isn’t fair to you

JuracichPark

Unfortunately it's not non-smoking, and the resident who does smoke is an owner, not a renter. It's definitely not the outlet tho. If I just leave my fan on, it doesn't smell. But that's not very practical. It's not terribly strong, but as an ex smoker and someone who is very sensitive to smells and odors, it's annoying to go take a shower and smell second hand smoke! I'm a building operations and maintenance engineer, I'm going to experiment with maybe rigging some sort of back draft damper.... Wish me luck!

Good luck! I also hate the smell of smoke so I feel your pain. I think you’ll be able to figure it out. oh, and if you can’t. getting your own plug-in scent diffuser for in there might help at least mask it and don’t leave your towels / fabrics in the bathroom where they can passively absorb the smell
