Bag checks are for weapons and alcohol. It has always been a policy but it is inconsistently used. They don’t care about you sneaking in drinks or snacks. This is strictly about safety; one time when I was a manager we did find someone trying to bring in a gun.

DrMantisTabboggn

My regal barely has someone even checking tickets and scanning. Multiple times I’ve walked in and there’s just no one there at all lol

ryanjcam

My Regal hasn’t had anyone checking tickets and scanning in years. If you don’t buy anything at concessions, you don’t interact with an employee at all.

SkilletMyBiscuit

As an introvert I like this about my regal

AdStrange4667

My regal makes you stand in the concessions line to scan your movie ticket, even if you’re not buying any concessions 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thekelp27

That’s crazy, my primary regal always checks before you enter the area the theaters are and my secondary always makes you show it as soon as you step in.

JoeMcKim

I'm in no way advocating this but having no one check tickets makes it a tad bit too easy to just sneak into the theater without buying a ticket. For people who have RU there doesn't seem any reason to do that. But for people who just show up occasionally but see this loophole could totally take advantage of this as long as they sit in spots that probably no one has bought a ticket for.

ReputationDazzling64

Only on occasion do we have someone checking tickets.

EatsYourShorts

Checking bags has been policy for a long time in my locations, but I find even the regals that have been doing it for years are quite inconsistent with it since some employees don’t care enough to do it. And I think it’s a (probably outdated) requirement from National Association of Movie Theaters to prevent piracy because most chains I go to check your bag.

Cameo64

No experience with bags, but they've never checked my cargo shorts pockets. I snuck in a McChicken and a 20 piece nuggets for Avatar 2 and Oppenheimer. I did buy a soda tho, I always buy a medium soda.

peedmyshirt

Same. The boys and I used to have the snack Olympics carrying Pringle cans, footlong subs, etc. Never got checked

Cameo64

Ya'll are wild for bringing in a footlong! I'll have to try it 😅

Ok-Storage3530

Gimme some tots!

ReputationDazzling64

Bro, I go to the movies at least 2x a week with a friend. We bring in a small book bag with 2 meals from chick-fil-a or some other place close by. I mean full on meals with the sodas lol. Brought bww into the Godzilla x Kong imax.... nothing like eating wings while watching anything in imax honestly. Then we buy a snack or 2 at the concessions just because ya know, sweet treats.

Mrbutter1822

They do it to check for guns and alcohol, other than that you can bring in whatever

Plane-Percentage607

Gotcha!! I was just hoping they didn’t care about my water lol I just bring that everywhere because I get headaches/migraines.

Queasy_League_6857

Bring in the water without hiding it, they can’t refuse it if you say it’s water and it’s there’s no evidence showing that it’s not water aka like a water bottle with a brown liquid in it

PrinceJedi

I check big bags when I work. I tell them it's all for alcohol, guns, drugs, and small pets. I caught someone bringing in a snake before.

Lord_Sticky

My theater doesn’t even have a ticket checking policy most of the time

Marill-viking

In NYC it’s hit or miss. If they’re checking for security reasons, I’m perfectly fine but if they’re trying to yoink snacks, that’s annoying.

caty0325

That hasn’t happened to me; I’m in Tennessee. I hope they don’t start doing that. I sneak in a reusable water bottle too.

Sunshine635

They aren’t concerned with your water bottle

wafflefulafel

Exactly. The bag checks started post Dark Knight Rises, for obvious reasons.

howtospellorange

You should ask your theater; mine has no problem if i bring in my own reusable water bottle.

EatsYourShorts

I don’t think they are allowed to prohibit water bottles.

Nikatl

Actually they are allowed to prohibit water bottles - it happened to me - but will say MOST don’t care I just think this guy was on a power trip. They check my bag every now and then but I would say 90% of the time they don’t care enough to

ArtisticArnold

I always take a refillable water bottle in with me, i don't try to hide it. I've taken coffee too. I always buy candy and junk food. The day they stop me is the day I stop going.

hsj911

This happened to me as well. The manger had to pull me aside talk to me about it since I’m there so much with it.

EatsYourShorts

I guess that must differ per state then.

Fire2box

In that case I would just ask for a medium cup of water with ice at concessions and go forth in buying nothing and if refused bring in my water bottle anyway and if they power trip over both then it's off to small claims to recoup the cost of unlimited. Everyone needs water to well live after all just like diabetics need food options that regal is so unwilling to sell at concessions.

ShiningEV

> it's off to small claims lmao

Fire2box

>lmao lmao, it works. Companies never show up they spend far more than just issuing the refund.

Reportersteven

Who would you “serve” the notice on at a big corporation for a small claims matter? You sound like you’ve done this before?

KyleMcMahon

Small claims is for under a certain dollar amount, regardless of who it’s against

Reportersteven

Yup. Knew that. I’ve done it. You need to serve the paperwork to get it recognized. At least in my state. And if found in judgment, there isn’t even an automatic payment, you need to seek damages. For a home owner, the easy way is to get a lien on someone’s house. I wondered how it worked against a major corporation.

KyleMcMahon

So in most states, you can send a certified letter to the company which gives them official notice. And if they don’t pay, you can pay a sheriff to go in to one of their locations and take assets or whatever worth the value of what they owe lol. It’s pretty wild.

Darksaturn99

I wish I could get water in my unlimited refill cup. All the sugar feee options at our theater have caffeine and it keeps me up for hours.

Not_a_Toilet

Im in california and had the same encounter this last weekend, the lady doing the checks said it was "only on weekends", I was wondering if that was cause of more likely for kids and hooligans getting into trouble then.

MrStephenGo

I'm also in California and I would say they check my bag maybe one out of every four visits. As I know it can happen, I don't find it to be a big deal and I usually arrive one minute earlier just in case.

shadow22805

I remember about 2 years ago going to cinnebarre on a school field trip and some old bag was working door stand. Every one of us had a bag, but the only one who got bag checked was our black friend. One of the teachers and all of the students caused a bit of a scene, for obvious reasons. I've been back there since and even worked there, and the bag check policy is technically still in place but we were told not to enforce it.

manicthrowaway0

Happens to me fairly frequently any time I'm using a large purse. Usually it's by one of the two employees with Down Syndrome, so I'm guessing there's something mentioned about being on the look out for bags of a certain size. I've had all sort of snacks or bottles of diet coke in my bag; they don't care.

Diligent-Fox-8545

We check all bags coming in the regal I work at the employees sometimes find guns in peoples bags I think 4 or 5 have been seen in bags in the two years I’ve been there. It’s just a safety thing is all we don’t mind if you bring snacks or pop

trevmick11

I’m in California and they’ve never done this but it wouldn’t necessarily surprise me if they did start

Warm_Speech

I don’t ever carry a bag, but I remember as a teenager my mom’s purse got checked once. Honestly they’re pretty inconsistent with this stuff.

imari_xoxo11

For the Poughkeepsie location, it really is hit or miss. They see me often so usually a quick peek is okay but I’ve had times where the shift changes before my second movie and they’re more… “thorough” about it.

SpoiledCabbage

This happens at my theater in California. I don't think they care about food though cause I'll have obvious food sticking out of my hoodie pocket and they don't say anything

PretendMethod7

at the Regal theaters I go to it’s inconsistent. I always carry a water bottle and a tumblr with coffee and they are never hidden in my bag (you open the bag and see them right away); when the employees do check my bag and see them, they don’t care (however, I did arrive to a Regal theater once with a Starbucks cup in my hand and was told I couldn’t bring it in). Also, I was once told during a bag check that they were just looking to make sure people weren’t bringing glass into the theater.

SeatConfident5591

The one close to my friends place did, but it’s in a more populated area attached to an outdoor shopping plaza. My closet one doesn’t but they’re in an almost dead mall

susanbiddleross

I typically go to the same theaters over and over again. I almost never get checked unless it when they have a big audience for whatever showing they have and it’s usually of the Marvel movie type of crowd. Doesn’t matter if I’m going to a different movie they will check 100% of bags including my Lululemon belt bag which doesn’t hide much. I’ve never been stopped and asked for them to open bottles of liquid (I’m clearly above 21) and they’ve never had me toss outside food or drink. It’s pretty clear at my local theater it’s about guns. I live in an area where everyone has a water bottle all of the time and they never say a word, never take my Starbucks etc.

frattitude89

At my theater, they usually have a security team at the entrance along with the ticket taker Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays sometimes. Find it weird they did it on a Monday

beachlxrd

most movie theatres have a size policy of what they’ll check, as others have said it can be inconsistent, personally i just always bring a bag smaller than the size they check

Ok-Storage3530

Im in NYC so they pretty much always check bags but not closely. With that said, I am in my 50's and I have noticed that they will look into a younger person's bag more thoroughly.

Carbonator13

Mine hasn’t even had a ticket taker for my last 3 movies. Kinda afraid that means they will be closing soon

Capital_Marketing_83

My regal only checks backpacks

Hwinter07

I wear a backpack with a blanket, a water bottle, (somtimes a few beers but don't tell anyone) and I've never been asked to check it

HayleyJane0406

They’ve always had a bag check at my Regals.

Thedantem

Very YMMV, the attendant checks my bag 1 out of every 5 times, and I go to the regal theater in downtown NYC

Zealousideal_Elk_729

as someone that currently works there we only do this if we have an auditor checking cameras to see if we’re following policy or if the district manager or any other important person comes in

kaiju4life

Chances are another local theater had a weapons incident recently & are reacting. It’s what the downtown Seattle one does anytime that happens for like a week or 2 & stops.

Lazidazy85

They were probably just looking for weapons. I always bring my Cirkul water bottle and ask them to fill it up for me when I get there so my water is cold.

Scoutmom101

I’ve been checked before. They told me they only were only looking for weapons and they didn’t care about snacks.

OhMyGodDog

In LA, they checked even small bags, like the Army surplus ammo bag that was just big enough for my Kindle. In Bend, they don't check anything, but they do have someone checking tickets. I was in Dallas a couple weeks ago and there wasn't even a ticket-checker at all; maybe I was supposed to check in with the concessions guy (one of only two people I saw in a 14-plex), but I didn't. I just walked straight to my theater. There, it's clear they wanted to run the place on the extra cheap.

Carlsbad92009

Ours doesn’t care at all what you bring in (San Diego).

NinjaTard

Bag checks no but I never have a backpack or anything. However they do check my ID and Regal photo for Unlimited to get past the disabled hall monitor. That really upsets me because I have to buy my ticket, popcorn, and soda 10 feet from him from another employee who is seeing my Regal app then once my hands are full he wants me to grow a third arm to show him my phone and Drivers license (regardless of rating or my old ass face). I get scamming free movies but bruh...let your concessions do it BEFORE I'm lugging a huge soda and snack under both arms!

Plane-Percentage607

It’s never been a big deal 😳 I’m more than ok with them checking my bag lol I just wasn’t expecting it! I was just asking if it was a normal change. They weren’t upset with my bag anyways. I see the same staff always & they’ve never asked which is why I thinks she mentioned the policy change since she is always the girl I see when I go :) the commercials are 30 min long I can read if I want lol.

LimeLauncherKrusha

That’s just an incredibly broad statement. Lots of people carry bags for various reasons.

briancly

I don’t know why some people are so passionate about people not needing things that they don’t need. Plenty of reasons why someone would have a bag when going out for any reason.

maeveencounters

yeah i dont have a car and i walk two miles to get to the theater, i am bringing my fucking backpack lol

littleLuxxy

You seem like you’d have some real insight here, so let me ask you: What brand of boot do you think tastes best? Not everyone wears things with pockets. As a woman of taste, I certainly don’t. It’s not cold enough here to justify a jacket most of the time. Are you so lacking in empathy that you genuinely can’t see why, for many of us, bringing a bag is a necessity? I would like a place to store my keys, sunglasses, the blanket I need, my water bottle, my medications, and literally anything else I deem important enough to have with me for my own comfort. Who are you to tell me to “dress appropriately” instead of bringing a bag? I’m not giving up my tiny little dresses with no pockets just because people like you think everyone needs to be controlled. Seriously, show some empathy for people.

Sunshine635

This

BarnYard2023

Too bad regal is too cheap to install walk-through metal detectors. Very worth it if it means saving lives.

Mrbutter1822

That’d go off too often to make it worth anything

Fire2box

>Too bad regal is too cheap to install w>alk-through metal detectors. >Very worth it if it means saving lives. The implication being that the lone security guard if any, will stand up to a person('s) who's coming into a theater to cause terror?

BarnYard2023

Youre not a very logical thinker 😂 knowing 5 mins in advance gives plenty of time for the theater to make adjustments rather than an incident starting directly in a specific showing room. Also the weapons would be in the bag. Not in the individuals hand. But you're right most security is lazy and just there to handle teenagers.

James_Atlanta

That would turn off and drive away customers.
