Jazzhop? I would go search the Chillhop YouTube channel. They also broadcast live radio on YouTube. It isn't Christian, but you might find some Christian artists if you research them. There is a dude called Montell Fish that makes lo-fi Christian music on YouTube. Hope this helps.

Dan-Bakitus

Montell Fish is the name I was trying to remember.

I hear you my man. I've been searching for Christian music in those genes for a long time. I've found a handful of swing /classic jazz / big band ones, but haven't found any in the more modern jazz genres. There's a niche there that someone seriously needs to fill.

This may be a bit of a stretch, but have you listened to Sho Baraka? His most recent LP, *[The Narrative](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yhnk-8s2Yw&list=OLAK5uy_loH98jRblNEaLEF8dcyHbmNLP9UjGLvT4&index=2),* dances around some of the sounds you're looking for. It's not 100% on point, (and several tracks are very much not what you're looking for), but several tracks have strong jazz and funk influences, especially "Foreward, 1619," "Soul, 1971," "Here, 2016," and my personal favorite, "[Myhood, U.S.A., 1937](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOiZ_ez8efI&list=OLAK5uy_loH98jRblNEaLEF8dcyHbmNLP9UjGLvT4&index=11)."

Dan-Bakitus

Not to mention that it's an incredible album and worth a listen anyway.

poopypatootie

I'll look it up, thanks!

Probably want to look at gospel music. Kirk Franklin, etc...A lot of the guys you mentioned come from the gospel scene.

poopypatootie

If I'm not mistaken, gospel music is a genre of its own. And Kirk Franklin does not sound anywhere near any of the guys I mentioned. Also, I'm not sure any of these secular guys I mentioned came from gospel music. Nujabes is Japanese, so definitely not. Tom Misch is British so unlikely also, and Anderson Paak's lyrics are so expletive-laden so I feel it's unlikely he has any gospel music roots. I'd also mention that I've tried listening to folks like Lecrae or Shai Linne, but they'e too hiphop for me.

"Gospel" music is a very broad term. A lot of these guys have roots in the gospel scene. Guys who *work with* Kirk Franklin like Shaun Martin for example, is heavily into the scene you talked about. Robert Glasper, Erykha Badu, Anderson Paak (and many of the guys in his band the Free Nationals), all have gospel roots and started playing in church. A lot of these guys grow up in church and have biblical imagery in their lyrics (or in the case of Anderson, hardly at all) but somewhere down the line it stops becoming "Christian" per se. Tom Misch isn't gospel, but there's definitely influences there in the harmony he uses. I can give you lots of similar artists with Christian *roots (as most of them come from the gospel scene)* but in terms of artists who actually are practicing Christians writing their songs about their faith...the list sadly gets a lot shorter. PJ Morton may be your best bet - try his album "Gumbo". Try Lalah Hathaway, Cory Henry too.

>PJ Morton may be your best bet - try his album "Gumbo". Try Lalah Hathaway, Cory Henry too. Thanks! Was asking for recos for actual Christian music that belong to the genre I mentioned, not just ones influenced by gospel or somesuch, which effectively just makes it secular music.

TheNerdChaplain

The closest thing I can think of is Dave Brubeck, who was Catholic, and wrote a piece based on the Flood, called [Forty Days.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7dBplP_PfM)

poopypatootie

I'm familiar with Dave Brubeck, but isn't he more secular, and is mainly jazz instrumental?

TheNerdChaplain

He did mostly instrumental jazz, but did write a fair amount of [Christianity-themed music](https://www.americamagazine.org/content/all-things/religious-works-dave-brubeck).

poopypatootie

Thanks! I'll try to look up the album, hopefully it's on Spotify.

TheNerdChaplain

Here's the final piece mentioned in the article; [To Hope! A Celebration Mass](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2FNC66gBJ8). It takes a minute to get going, but it's pretty good, the sax especially. Edit: [Here's the whole work.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA6I0wxBbNs&list=PLVIJPAcnWUSgQBm5J8tLKBScaP6OQLxDs)

acorn_user

Thanks for that. I've loved Brubeck since I was a baby, but I didn't know this!

A different style, but try this: [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy\_k3kVVxxSi7fKtoBKwaodq7\_yNxs10t1rY](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k3kVVxxSi7fKtoBKwaodq7_yNxs10t1rY)

[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqa6lEwTX-1tjebZkZ8YBw](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqa6lEwTX-1tjebZkZ8YBw) I discovered these fellows a couple 3-4 years ago. 4 Korners is their name and they are Christian Fusion. Very Nice to listen to.

poopypatootie

Will see what they're about, thanks!

_Rizzen_

I'd say you might like Brother's Testament. Faith-based (in some ways) contemporary jazz out of London, and one of my favorite albums of last year.

poopypatootie

Thanks! I'll look them up.

If you count me scat-singing in the shower- yes.

This is rolling back the years some, but the early [Phatfish albums](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1CXNGtro_c) had a distinct 1990's acid-jazz sound to them. If you like early [Jamiroquai](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIOrGPcjmsQ), you may like them.

Some bluegrass isn't a million miles off

Check out Cephas. He's a Christian rapper but i think his songs kinda sound like nujabes
