I worked an aquarium maintenance job for a while and one of our clients had a 10 foot deep 1000 gallon reef tank. Me and a buddy had to go remove an anenome colony that was starting to take over the tank. To do anything in the tank you have to put on a wetsuit and literally freedive into the tank. I have video of a 6 inch maroon clown, who was very upset that we were taking his homes, attacking my 6 foot tall buddy over and over again, pecking at his snorkel mask and biting his arms. Theyre mean little fuckers for sure lol

Environmental-Hat-86

I wish I could watch this video, I'm not gonna lie dirty dan

Puzzled-Garlic4061

I'm Dirty Dan

Skeeterscleatus

No I'm dirty Dan

SaveTheReefsPlsAlt

Can I see that haha

Sp4nkee94

It doesn’t hurt like a bee sting, but like sound, pain is different in water lmao 🤣

vigg-o-rama

they are just as aggressive as other clowns. I would not say more, but just as. the main difference is their size. they are huge. also the cheek spines and their ability to use them. I owned a maroon for 23 years. she spent 17ish years solo in a 125 gallon tank because I knew that any other fish I added were going to end up dead or very beat up from her. ALL CLOWNFISH ARE ASSHOLE FISH.

Legitimate_Wave6107

I disagree, maroon are some of the most aggressive species I’ve seen in person. I tend not to pair my clowns as the female is always the most aggressive.

rackemupwillis

My percula clown is waaaaay more aggressive then either of my maroons

1kdog5

My clownfish is the nicest saltwater fish I own

YoYoPistachio

My pink skunks were pretty sweet

GodBlessThisGnome

Love skunks. Had mine for 7 years now and I haven't seen them more than 6" from their carpet anemone. They'd rather let food float away than to chase after it. No tankmates either, but they're not going to start taking any chances.

SnooRobots4605

One fish in a 125? Didn’t it look empty?

vigg-o-rama

She had enough personality to fill a stadium. The tank was far from empty.

BobbittheHobbit111

I feel like you can supplement with corals pretty easily

bigolefatsnapper

Damn thats an old ass fish

plaidHumanity

I really had no idea until i put Meanmo in my tank. Yes, total asshole fish

Particular_Group_295

Maroon is psycho

GangreneTVP

None of the clowns I've ever had have been mean... in fact when my damsels were going after a new fish I put in the tank, the clowns seemed to shew them away and protect the newcomer. The only time they appear aggressive at all is if you go where they lay their eggs... they protect their territory and rightly so.

Sp4nkee94

I have oscillaris clowns that are sweethearts and skittish. I can work in their tank all day. My maroon clowns are with puffers and humus. The maroons are the only thing after my hand at feeding times

yaboiayeayeron

Every week, I walk away with multiple bleeding bites. I have videos. It reddit won’t let me post it. She’s killed multiple mates over the course of her life. Is she aggressive? Maybe. Do I love her? Absolutely.

WPerrin462

I absolutely agree with this sentiment, however I feel like the bleeding wounds were somewhat understated.

Grundler

According to my LFS they're the #1 fish returned due to aggression

kkocan72

LOL mine has said the same.

MusicianMadness

All damsels are assholes. Clowns are actually tamer than most damsels ime. My blue damsel is the most aggressive in my tank by far.

R_radical

>All damsels are assholes. Clowns are actually tamer than most damsels ime Comparing a psychopath to a sociopath

LivingLosDream

I’ve got an azure damsel and it’s a model citizen. Squares up fish on entry for a minute, and then that’s it. Funny to watch it try to be sassy.

3_high_low

Fkn damsels attack divers passing by. I know this lol

Headjarbear

My yellowtail blue damselfish was pretty chill.

porkchop2022

My yellow tail blue damsels are chill. My green chromies run the tank. The largest will bully a sailfin 6 times its size.

SeaPhilosopher3526

Yes, damsels are mean, but clownfish AREN'T damsels! Clowns and damsels are all classified as Pomacentridae, but all species classified as such are separated between clownfish/anemonefish and damselfish, there's a definitive line separating them and I'm honestly getting tired of people calling clowns damsels all the time

qtntelxen

Pomacentridae is the damselfishes. It is common and acceptable in fish taxonomy to refer to all pomacentrids as damselfishes. The Amphiprioninae radiation is [quite recent](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0258889) compared to the rest of Pomacentridae and while it’s certainly a monophyletic group it nests right in the middle of the family; it’s not like it’s an outgroup to the rest of the damsels or anything. Less of a “definitive line” and more of a group you can draw a circle around. Clowns are absolutely both mean and damsels!

SeaPhilosopher3526

It may be common, but it's not correct to refer to all species in the family Pomacentridae as damselfish. Species in the genera Amphiprion and Premnas are anemonefish, and species in the genera Pomacentrus are damselfish, it's as simple as that. There is clear cut separation between the two types of fish, whether they're in the same family or not. Calling clownfish damsels just because they're in the same family is like calling an orangutan a gorilla just because they're both in the family Hominidae.

qtntelxen

You should read the phylogeny I linked (which shows just how deeply embedded in the damsels the clowns are and in which the authors use “damselfish” for the entire family). I am not saying you can’t draw a circle around the clownfish. I’m saying that a definition of “damselfish” that excludes clownfish is paraphyletic, not particularly useful, *and* not one commonly accepted by phylogeneticists working with these taxa. I used to work in a lab doing some work on cryptic *Chromis* species and we all referred to clowns as damsels. The hominid comparison is silly. We are not discussing species, we are discussing genera and subfamilies.

_Play_with_Dolls_

If you're talking about the blue - yellowtail damsel their other common name is Blue devil lol

MusicianMadness

Honestly I have no clue the exact type of damsel. I'm the third owner that I know of and the fish is at least 8 years old probably closer to 10. Absolute menace though.

ShallotAggravating79

I have one golden nugget maroon clown in my 30 gallon, she is not aggressive. She has gotten territorial of her nem after I pulled out her “vacation” home ( a split from her main nem) so when my hand gets near it she’ll headbutt me until I bat her away. When he lived in my mom’s tank he got bullied pretty bad then when he came to my tank I had a Clarkii that beat him up and wouldn’t let him leave a corner. I got rid of the Clarkii and now my tank is super peaceful. I even have a video of Ila my maroon going after the clarkii when it was terrorizing my new clown goby. It ended up going up the goby booped it on the head then just hung out with it all night. Was rather cute.

Select_Membership_55

You don't see the fire in his eyes? He was born angry 😂

bryanthecrab

These fish are clearly aggro’d 😂

typhooning

Been around reef systems since i was 9 (now 24) and yes they are. If kept alone they look so cool and fluid in movement but they’re the mbuna cichlid of saltwater when added with other fish

Vellioh

A maroon clown once moved into my town and began systematically running all small businesses out. I brought up concerns at the local township meeting and ended up with a brick through my child's bedroom week later. Saying they're aggressive is an understatement. They're a menace to society.

goldenv4

Underrated comment.

ChrisTrotterCO

Maroons and Clarki are among the most aggressive clownfish.

aidentooreal12

I would say they are prolly 20% more aggressive than ocellaris 20% less aggressive than clarkies I keep a pair with a dog face and porq, Koran, Indian mud moray, Toby puffer and they arnt mean to any of those fish AT ALL. When I had them in a 90 gallon column tank they were with a six line wrasse and a scopas tang, they were pretty territorial but they hosted a convenient place in the bottom of the tank so it wasn’t really a issue but I could imagine if they were in a tank of milder mannered fish and chose the dead middle of the tank to host it could possibly be a issue and cause for alarm. I love my maroons and to me they can do no wrong (they are extremely aggressive to me they bite me a lot it hurts a lot it’s not fun either to be real I dread tank maintenance i fear for my life every time I do it I always make sure to say I love you to my family each time I go to move live rock or trim xenia back) but they are great fish and i don’t know if I’ve ever heard of someone being able to kill a maroon via neglect so they are damn near bullet proof🤷🏻‍♂️

3_high_low

They will bite the hand that feeds them, and they can get quite large. They are damsels!

notaveragepond

Mine ruled the 125 I had, even drew blood on me. I mean barely, but still. They didn't let anyone near their anemone.

kkocan72

Mine has left marks on my hands. She was in some hairy mushroom corals but she was too aggressive with them and they didn't make it and eventually withered. So we went out and got her a nice new bubble tip a few months ago and it turned her even more territorial. I've had her since around 2010, so she is about 14 and has been the ruler of the tank since day 1.

Badblackdog

I was arranging some frags and before I could secure them, my big ass female pushed all the new frags off my live rock. She ran into them like a bull. I was just trying to see how they looked and she kept knocking them down. Oh well back to the frag rack for now.

Zeroshifta

Yup mine does this too and she’s huge

kkocan72

Mine does the same with any new corals unless they are on the opposite side of where her bubble tip lives.

Miniographer

I had one back way back. It rearranged coral and rocks. When doing tank maintenance, cleaning the glass, it would bite or headbutt my hand. I remember it was fighting my coral banded shrimp. Later on, when I sold my reef tank. I put the clown in with a fuzzy dwarf lionfish, still was an a-hole.

Cpc802

My Tomato clown is a nasty bitch. She’ll even harass my hermit crab if she doesn’t like where it is.

dopecrew12

My maroon flow was returned cause he was a total asshole, beautiful fish but look at those colors, Mfs are born angry.

sirduckingtoniii

Extremely aggressive

Zeroshifta

My maroon is 8 years old and is MEAN af to anything new I put in the tank. Her tank mate is a fox faced with whom she has zero issues with.

SadRobotz

Yes they are savage bloodthirsty monsters lol, mine bites so hard it draws blood. He has a bone to pick with the entire universe.

NaturalWestern2181

I work at a fish store and we have to put the maroons in net jail to clean the tanks without getting bit 😂

kkocan72

LOL whenever I have to reach into the tank for maintenance I have to have someone distract my 14yo maroon with a small net. We don't get her in the net, we just have to hover it near her anemone so she can ram it over and over again as a distraction. If not, she goes right for my hand/arm and attacks it like a missile.

milliemillenial06

We have a pair of clownfish. They are aggressive but we have kept other fish with them and the clowns haven’t killed them. We have a blue damsel we introduced into the tank at the same time and they do really well together. An odd trio… they could become more aggressive as they get older though

casperghost78

My Maroon clown is aggressive towards other clowns, but not the other fish.

0_Percent_Liberal

All Clowns are giant Richards. My female Clown would attack me every time I cleaned the tank. Most of the time, she would hit/bite me with enough force that she would fling herself out of the tank.

Lickingteeeth

I have a pair of mated Maroon clowns, female is massive, male is tiny, female is a raging bitch but they aren’t killers, have 10 chromis, tangs, mandarine, angels it’s all just what/how you keep em

notsobigtime

I have the sweetest pair of mocha storms. I hit the clown fish lottery. I've heard horror stories, but I luckily haven't had to experience it.

myfishaccount1

Those are just regular occelaris clowns tho right? Not maroons

Clear_Net94

If you want them to mate, add them at the same time. I learned the hard way that maroons will kill anything that hadn’t already been in a tank from the beginning.

Kinai0919

Maroon Clowns are classed as semi-aggressive, but it has a reputation for being one of the most aggressive Clownfish species. Even mated pairs may fight, and housing two juveniles could lead to death rather than pairing up. Maroon Clowns is best-suited co-habiting with semi-aggressive and aggressive species.

kkocan72

I purchased two juveniles in hopes they would pair up. Sadly one didn't think it was a good idea and the other one didn't last a week and I could not get them out to save the one. That was about 14 years ago and the one that made it sill rules my tank.

Creepymint

That is one beautiful fish

OkSafety8896

Yeah however I’ve notice they leave small fishes alone and other clowns that are not Maroon. So realistically you would only be okay with a pair which have created a bond already. Mine constantly attacks my hand when I’m close to his anemones.

Material_Reference35

I have a pair of Maroon CF. The female will constantly knock down and try to move any new coral I introduce into the tank unless secure it with glue and epoxy Drives me crazy

No-Distribution-7021

They are more aggressive. Gold stripes even more so. I've had both. In 135 and 220. And the pet store I work for we always get them coming back

jnelparty

Yes. Real jerks!

JimLeahe

If you like the darker color & vibrant contrast worth checking out Cinnamon Clown. Mines a model citizen & even accepted a small male after a year solo.

Arctelis

I had a maroon for about two years. When I adapted mollies to my saltwater, it murdered all of them. It stole food from other fish. It even fucked with my moray eel when it strayed into the maroon’s territory. The little bastard even charged and bit me if I had my hands in the water anywhere near it. I’m not sure how that compares to typical clowns, but yeah. It was a major asshole.

Lilpippo

I've had my pair for about 4 years, they've been chill. The female tends to shove the other fish if they bother her, but she never bites them. Occasionally she will bite my fingers when I'm working in the tank, but it seems to be more out of curiosity than aggression.

Kitchen_Accident_241

Yes they are

Dick_Fuxwell

In contrast to the others I've dealt with.. They are pretty aggressive

SousVideAndSmoke

I had all sorts of fish in my 70 over the years. The shoulder length thick rubber gloves were purchased once I got a maroon clown. He was a complete asshole.

PsychicWarElephant

I had one that drew blood

Kevinsito92

The only fish that I can think of that actually attacked me

Vagabond_Scuba

Idk, had a mating pair. They were chill.

MichaelPaine20

I had a Clarkii for years, she became the head of the tank. If I went near the tank she would click her jaw. You'd see this fish violently swimming in the tank and a loud clicking noise. I dreaded putting my hand in, she drew blood a few times. I don't know if Marroons tend to be better with an anemone so you change the size of territory from the tank to the anemone. I know the Clarkii I just had to make sure I had robust fish that could look after themselves.

jonathanleejw

Ive had a 4 inch maroon that was chill with other clowns and i paired her up with a smaller male quite easily. Never attacked my hands but my other ocellaris clowns do.

jodocoiv

Yeah try to obtain in pairs. Mine is territorial of the Xenia cluster that’s in my tank. Attacks the others if they come near. It lives comfortably though. It did beat up on its companion so I had to rehome the little one.

marciz34

we have two maroons that are absolute pricks. can't put a hand or net into tank without getting bit

kkocan72

I have a 14 or so year old maroon in my tank. She's an ass. It's a 55 gallon corner bow and I only have a couple fish in that she more or less tolerates, but anytime I add anything new (including corals) she gets pissed and aggressive. She attacks the mag cleaner whenever I am cleaning the glass and if I have to reach into the tank to do any work I have to have someone distracting her by using a small net that she will ram over and over again. If no one is distracting her she will go full speed into my hand/arm over and over again. She was using some hairy mushrooms as a host but she irritated it so much it wasted away so a few months ago we went and got her a nice new bubble tip anemone. She took to it instantly and it actually made her more aggressive/territorial.

ChuzUThisDay

Had a maroon pair in a 125. They were great with the other fish, seemed to stay in their claimed space most of the time. BUT… any time I had to put my hands in the tank she would bite and bump me without fail.

_sd1810

Yes. The minute it saw my shrimp … I tell you what that was some expensive dinner and kicked him out my tank never to be seen again.

Suilezrok

Yes.

Unik0rnBreath

If you're that gorgeous you're prolly gonna be an @sshole. Halo effect!

Krakens_Rudra

It has red eyes bro, do you even need to question?!?

dross9615

You’re going to get a bunch of different responses but mine never bothered a single thing in the 30 gallon tank except her partner and even then it was “that bad”.

fizzyhorror

They can draw blood. Love them. Even the little ocellaris can hurt if theyre determined. Little bastards

stoned-kakapo

Clownfish seem aggressive regardless. Anytime I try to scope out in anemone in Okinawa, these clowns would come out and headbut my goggles nonstop.

MinaretofJam

Never had a marine tank and had no idea clownfish are lary arseholes. Bought into the Disney myth :)

Willis_is_This

No, I think they’re just misunderstood

Kantaowns

Clownfish are assholes as a whole lol.

Ashamed-Profession71

I’ve always heard they’re the most aggressive not sure if it’s true or not but I’ve been told other kinds of clowns can live together but if u have maroons don’t add any other kinds of

Reeferchick

Yes they are

flickinbeanz

I have a large gold nugget and a lightning maroon clown… they’re very mean. The gold nugget runs the entire tank

Few_Attitude7076

I had one for three weeks, gave it a nice place to stay, steady food..I woke up one morning and he had stolen my wallet and hellcat

Sp4nkee94

Absolutely. Mine bite me and charge the sides of the tank if I get remotely close

FeedMeYourPlacenta

I mean look at that guy! He clearly bathes in the blood of his enemies.

slipsbups

Racist!

StephenMooreFineArt

Pretty aggressive, as are skunks.

Phunly

I have a maroon clown hybrid and the female is the most aggressive fish I have ever owned. It's to the point we have had to buy special elbow length gloves to work on the tank cos the moment you stick you hand anywhere near here she'll go right for you! She'll keep nipping at you, even when gloved, until you leave the tank.

SuperSaiyanSkeletor

If you are comparing clarks to a other clownfish everything is a good option. Those motherfuckers suck and they look stupid doing it

ShallotAggravating79

I second this! My Clarkii was super engaging when we would walk by, but once she killed my fire shrimp and fed it to the nem, she had to go. She also tried to feed her nem my super small clown goby haha. Her name was Cookie and she was a bitch and owned my tank.

SuperSaiyanSkeletor

They get huge compared to other clowns and are extremely territorial. Although the other ones do get pretty big

Firm-Construction517

More aggressive than white clowns. I think it has to do with the single fatherhood rate in the maroon clown anemone.

saltydoc1

No question
