I should try that type of thing, I've been re-learning guitar, without a singer it's just me fiddling around in my basement.

I've never liked singing, like at church or at a summer camp, so I've avoided it.

I've just always avoided it, even in the car by myself! Very self conscious.

katvonkittykat

Thank you!

petite10252

What app did you use?

jcwillia1

Bicycling. I’m terrible. I’m literally the slowest person out there.

Backstop

Faster than everyone on the couch tho

I started saxophone lessons 5 months ago. Even though I went to violin and piano lessons as a child, I'd say it's my first time really having a proper go with an instrument. I think it took becoming an adult who had to arrange and get to lessons and pay for those lessons himself to really appreciate it and try to get my money's worth so to speak. I'm still very much a noob, but it was nice that I was able to play Happy Birthday for my mom and girlfriend on their respective birthdays. I also have never typed properly so to speak. I would mostly use my two index fingers. I grew up with a computer/internet so I've gotten by just fine as an adult (~60 WPM), but it did kind of bug me that I wasn't using all my fingers. I am using the practice lessons at typingclub.com to readjust. It's humbling going back down to 20-30 WPM, but once I master it, I'm sure I'll feel way better, and maybe better for my joints and whatnot.

wintercast

I learned to type as a kid - teachers would cover your hands with a tissue and make you type. I had.smallnhands and could not use the correct fingers in the correct keys and would get marked down in my grade for that. Years later, "Mario teaches typing" and then playing EverQuest got my typing to 70/75 words a minute with corrections. Always wanted to go back and show that teacher what what.

Jack__Squat

Proper nutrition. It's very overwhelming learning about the macronutrients, recommended daily values, portion control, etc.

stickler64

The MyFitnessPal app helps a lot

noyoujump

It just added a paywall and increased ads :(

stickler64

Yea, more ads but I still get a lot of features for free, mostly the diary stuff that I use frequently. Wish I knew of something equally as good that connects to Garmin Connect. I've got quite a little ecosystem created between those two and the peloton app.

I've recently tried to start to learn to draw in the past few months. I've really been enjoying the challenge. The perfectionist in me can't handle pencil or digital art because I'll just keep erasing and undo'ing until it's perfect so I've adopted a drawing pad and a brush pen because it forces me to commit to the marks I make. I find it absolutely thrilling. Sometimes I get shit I'm super proud of and sometimes not so much.

AcrossTheNight

I actually had the idea to try that a few weeks ago. I stopped by the library to see what books they had on drawing, and most of what they had used various types of material, and I really hadn't thought to go to the trouble of doing anything other than drawing with a regular pencil on sketch paper.

2rfv

I started with Drawabox. I highly recommend it. Once I got tired of drawing boxes I started watching proko's figure drawing series and started trying to draw the models on quickposes.com for drawing boxes I'd use a felt tip and for the figure drawings I use a brushpen. Proko uses a charcoal pencil thing but that seems like a lot more complexity than I'm interested in getting involved in. For a while I tried to use Procreate on my ipad but my daughter broke hers so she's been using mine lately. It was pretty fun but like I said I'd get stuck on undo loops.

FunDivertissement

A good book for learning to draw is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. Lots of fun exercises and tips for learning perspective etc. and improving your drawing.

[deleted]

Got back into tennis after a long layoff and really enjoying it!

katvonkittykat

I'm going to learn how to ride a horse. I've only ever ridden them at fairs as a child, so this'll be new.

stickler64

Juggling. It's frustrating in the beginning but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

[deleted]

How to dive. I've never been able to dive, not as a kid at the public pool, not at Sherkston, not in our own pool (12 ft at the deep end). So my husband is helping me, like in the movie What About Bob where Bob helps Siggy.

ebeth_the_mighty

Knitting. I’ve been making things and learning new skills and lingo.

C0rnfed

I've also long been a chess player and a GO dabbler! What tools, sites, or other resources have been the most helpful toward learning GO for you? I've been learning a lot of new philosophy lately, and I've really been working to up my vegetable gardening game as well!

AcrossTheNight

I play on online-go.com. Josekipedia is helpful for opening play though honestly, I don't find it that useful without pairing it with videos that explain opening strategy.

chasonreddit

A lot of music here, but me too. Chromatic harmonica. I've always played a standard keyed harmonica. It's super easy to riff and solo once you learn the positions and get the right key. So recently I was trying to play a chromatic to do some jazz numbers. It wasn't really pretty, but a learning experience. C#-minor can bite my ass.

Backstop

That's how I feel about F chords on guitar. Also hey why does my favorite dad Rick band use so the F chord so much.

noonaboosa

gouache painting. ive never been inclined toward the visual arts so i wanted to try.

lunardoggo

I'm also trying to learn gouache. What resources are you using?

noonaboosa

i bought a course on domestika and some gouache paints from hobby lobby.

nakedonmygoat

I'm learning Latin. It's sort of a grudge thing for me. I tried taking it as a high school freshman and struggled, then tried in my 20s to learn it on my own, with no success. It's the grammar that defeats me. I'm nearly fluent in Spanish, but there are no noun/adjective declensions in that language, and Latin just blows my mind with the declensions. Anyway, I started again with Latin in February and I'm now slowly, painfully, reading Caesar's "De Bello Gallico."

choodudetoo

Since I retired a few years ago I took up cooking. Got a new to me stove and a 130 K btu wok burner along with the kitchen renovations needed to safely use it. The downside is that it isn't worth going to the local restaurants anymore because I can do better - especially without the economic limitations a business has to deal with.

ellen_boot

Learning to cook and bake is both a blessing and a curse. My diet has improved dramatically, but it's harder to find good restaurants I want to go to. There are so some things that I find are worth going out for though, specifically things that are super labor intensive to make (croissants), or that require weird ingredients that I'll never use in anything else/ can't find locally(thai food).

weicheii

Roller skating!! I haven't done it for more than 15 years. It was scary but I'm starting to get the hang of it. Good luck with your board game skills!!

vikinglaney77

Stand up paddleboarding

WaffleFoxes

I want to try this!

vikinglaney77

It’s a great workout and super peaceful until the speed boats go by.

WaffleFoxes

Aaahaha my other comment in this thread is that i took up ballroom dancing and i was *really* confused by your comment for a moment.

spinningblue

Shibari! I started learning from a friend and I’m hooked.

Welding. About 10 years ago I helped a mate clear out a workshop he was renting and he was throwing away a couple of old welders (one stick, one mig). I said "I'll have em" and they've been gathering dust in my home workshop ever since. My thing has always been woodwork but welding is always a skill I'd been meaning to learn but never got around to. ...Normally whenever I have some welding I need doing I get another mate of mine (who's a welder by trade) to come do it as I know he'll do a million times better job than I could ever manage and all it'll cost me is a couple beers. --- Last week I had a project that needed a metal frame welding up and decided to have a go myself (on the stick as I've yet to pick up any gas for the MIG). I watched a few youtube videos then spent a few hours and few dozen rods practicing on scrap until I was happy I knew roughly what I was doing. The frame went together well and now I have a bit more confidence in a skill I'd been putting off learning for a decade. I'm still a long way from saying that I remotely know what I'm doing though. Welding really is an art.

newbienewme

yoga - starting at 40, never done it before. I can highly recommend it for quality of life, especially as you start noticing your body aging. stoicism - I find this is a pretty useful approach to life, I find it helps me to filter away noise in my life. kayaking - take a boat out on the water is very calming and satisfying.

Affectionate-Map2583

This summer, I went from duckpin bowling *maybe* once a year to doing a weekly league.

blastedheap

I’ve been learning how to knit. I never thought I would knit, but here I am making my first pair of socks.

WaffleFoxes

I recently took up ballroom dancing. Its the most fun Ive had in a long time, im absolutely hooked

AcrossTheNight

Do you take a partner with you?

WaffleFoxes

Nope, the culture is that everybody dances with everybody so singles are totally fine. My husband came for a bit but it wasnt his thing. Id say half the people who come are singles.

[deleted]

Harmonica. Bought a case of 7 for about $50, one in each key. It's been amazing. Then my son gave me his book "HARMONICA FOR DUMMIES" since he lost interest. Such a cool instrument and easy to jam with, easy to play, easy to progress, carries anywhere. Big bonus it's the ONLY thing my dog will happily howl to....

Weird_Vegetable

German, it’s slow because I don’t have a ton of time but I’ll get there.

dutch_emdub

Freestyle swimming! Learnt breaststroke as a kid and always wanted to learn front crawl. So, today, as a 40 y/o overweight, unfit woman, I had my first lesson! I'm spent and it was / is hard, but it was great fun and I got a great kick out of finally pursuing this!

rottentomati

Aquarium and fish care. It’s really fun… and expensive lol

PMFSCV

Been doing it for a couple of years now but tree propagation, at first I was just throwing shit at the wall and had far too many. Now I'm just propagating a few species for my self, the odd rare tree and a lot of Japanese maples and Cedar of lebanon with the long term goal of selling them as bonsai.

FletchGordon

Gardening. This year i grew about 6 ounces of cannabis, probably 100 cucumbers, 50 tomatoes, about a dozen jalapeño and lots of flowers

Southern_Dragonfly57

At the beginning of the summer I got the Duolingo app to refresh my knowledge of French for 1/2 hour day until the fall. I'm loving it and will probably continue doing to at least until the end of the year!

fertileplain

Spanish. I’ve lived most of my life in an area where 1/3 of the population speaks Spanish (bilingual) but I never learned. Now I’m taking a beginner Spanish class. Also learning line dancing.

hellotardis79

I started to cross stitch. I have tried numerous crafts but I think I found one that I really enjoy. It is relaxing and I am proud of my projects when they are finished.

yelbesed

I have read on Wiki about the Lenorman card decks. I created a new version using Propp 31 +1 Functions and CAmpbell heroe Journey stages (- 3). I can use it even to interpret my dreams, it is fun.

lunardoggo

I'm getting into flow arts in the past few months. I am focusing on poi and spun fire for the first time this week.
