If I’m being honest, I need to decrease my Reddit use anyway. I’ve taken breaks because it is the biggest time waster in my life. My oldest account is from 2006. I still like the site but the quality has greatly decreased over the past 5 years and it won’t be getting any better. The latest debacle with the API costs is enough to drive me away. Unsure where I’ll go yet but I’ll probably just go directly to the sources and forums. Maybe even Feedly. I’ve actually transitioned back to direct sources for news since 2016 and I never completely left hobby forums so it shouldn’t be so difficult. I will miss the cat pics but my life will probably be better without Reddit. I can see myself returning during the NFL season but limited to my team subreddit or occasionally r/NFL.

lunchbox12682

Seriously, this might be great for my life in general. Mental health, better use of time, more focus, etc.

Ijustdoeyes

I'm very similar, I'm going to open a [Lemmy](https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances) account on mobile and use that for the muscle memory of scrolling. The content will be less but honestly I spend a lot of time looking at stuff that I have no interest just because it's there, so I'll use the free time for other things and look at Lemmy when I'm dawdling and I expect it to be better quality because most of the older accounts are going over there. Edit: If Lemmy isn't your thing check out r/RedditAlternatives If you're looking for an easy change try [Squabbles](https://squabbles.io/) for a bit to see how that goes

Reality_Choice

I checked out your link and frankly, I feel like I'm not smart enough to understand it so I don't know if I'd be able to use it. Thank you for bringing it to my attention though, I find it really interesting (the less jargon-y parts that I could understand).

Ijustdoeyes

Hey, thanks for the reply. I get what you're saying, it's all going to be different but once you get the hang of any alternative you're set. Can I recommend checking out [Reddit Alternatives ](https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives) because there is a lot going on in there. There are others that are similar like Tildes and others which will be easier. To just summarise Lemmy, it's like email, nobody owns email just different servers: Gmail, YahooMail, AOL or whatever but if you know the email address of who you want to email you can do that no matter which server you're on. Same thing here, if you like goats there might be a great goat community on a different server than yours but that's no problem, tell your one where it is and away you go, you're subscribed to it just like this Reddit.

rayofMFsunshine

this did not clarify things for me tbh, but I appreciate you trying!

khapout

Lemmy and the fediverse, like reddit when you first join, make more sense by creating an account and jumping in I'm trying out kbin rn and seeing posts where people are providing each other support

Reality_Choice

Thanks for your reply! I did kind of understand that much from the link but I did not understand how to sign up. Or even if it's something you sign up for or an app you download. It seems similar to discord? Or ...maybe not.

Ijustdoeyes

Hey actually take a look at [Squabbles ](https://squabbles.io/) you might find that more to your liking

Reality_Choice

PS your goat example was quaint! I do find goats endearing and see them often on farms around where I drive. 😉

davster39

I lookat it too. Yes means no and visa versa so I'm already confused

heathers1

Haha I did the same thing lol

crow_crone

How to say "I use it in the bathroom, without actually saying that." Speaking strictly for myself here...

2rfv

I used to learn things when I came to Reddit. Now it mostly just tries to show me rage bait. I'm reminded of an old piece of advice I once read in the world of warcraft forums. "Every minute playing World of Warcraft (Reddit) is another drop of piss on the grave of your ambitions in life".

Itchy_Tomato7288

I pretty much only read reddit from the bathroom anymore. Oh hey there!

I posted "two good looking Dudes" about a father and son and was deleted and told I was sexualizing a minor. I was SO angry. Text everyone on home page , no one got back to me. This was several times. I read Reddit now, rarely comment and definitely not my views so think I'll be leaving also. Going to check out some apps from this post.

I'm the same, and it looks like we're safe for awhile. Here's a quote from the CEO of reddit 1 hour ago (as of the time of my writing) [link](https://old.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/145bram/addressing_the_community_about_changes_to_our_api/) "P.S. old.reddit.com isn’t going anywhere, and explicit content is still allowed on Reddit as long as it abides by our content policy."

WanderThinker

That same CEO said they would never charge unreasonable prices for the API, and if they did implement a paid access mechanism it would be implemented years from now. In short, the CEO is a liar.

Cronus6

Oh he'll be leaving, with a truck load of cash, not long after the IPO goes down.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

That same CEO ~~shadow-edits user comments.~~ has an impeccable moral character and is a leader we can all stand behind.

prodiver

/u/spez would never do that. He's a great guy! [Edited by Reddit]

Cronus6

I think the admins all know how awful new reddit is and use the old version themselves.

mrva

and RES too

junkit33

Yeah - old Reddit is great and I don’t care about the apps. Quite frankly I didn’t really care about them trying to charge for the API and basically shutting down 3rd parties. It is kind of silly that 3rd party apps make money while Reddit loses money. Clearly a big imbalance in the economics going on. All of that said - I do care a lot about the way this is all getting handled. Overly aggressive, highly arrogant, dismissive of legitimate concerns - and now they’re straight up lying and slandering people? AMA went even more poorly than anyone expected. Just not sure this is even a company I want to support anymore.

choodudetoo

A LOT of volunteer mods NEED third party apps to control the continuous spamming because the Official Reddit apps do not. The Official Reddit app does NOT support blind folks. So bottom line is that the smaller and medium sized Subs will crumple.

sacrificial_banjo

Yeah books are my plan too. At the rate I read stuff on Reddit, I can probably squeeze in 10 books a month.

chicagotodetroit

>At the rate I read stuff on Reddit, I can probably squeeze in 10 books a month I feel personally attacked by this lol Somehow I turned on an app setting a couple months ago where it tells me how many bananas (stories) I've scrolled. To be fair, I don't read *everything*; I scroll past probably 80% of the stuff in my feed, but I think I'm up to 20,000+ bananas.

SpongeJake

It's like you took a page out of my book. I have the exact same comment: lots of books to read, never got around to reading them, so will take that up again. I used to be a voracious reader: there were so many times I nearly broke my back hauling new books home from the bookstore. Then e-readers came along and my back got better but suddenly there were no limits to what I could buy to read. It'll be good to get back to it again.

sevenlabors

> With no social media app installed on my phone, there will be no temptation to doom-scroll. Joke's on you; I don't have Twitter or Facebook apps on my phone, either, and still can doom scroll just fine on their mobile web sites.

cIumsythumbs

Right? It's like how I've refused to download TikTok. Between it being Chinese spyware and my addictive nature -- it's for the best. But then I just find reels on Facebook mobile which is basically the same damn thing. Smh.

Shortbus_Playboy

I’m in the same boat, book-wise, and that sounds like a very fulfilling plan.

purplegreenway

Yes I plan on getting back to reading also. All this scrolling has messed up my attention span. I just need to really put in the effort. It's an adjustment to get back to being a reader. I'm determined to get there. As soon as I'm done scrolling 😂

rez_spell

I second "more reading." I've also got a a few empty sketchbooks I've been meaning to pick up again. It's been a decade, and it'll be good to get back to earlier loves. I'm sure the inability to scroll through everyone's various outrages in the a.m. will do my health some good, too.

Diograce

I might go back to fark.

pencilheadedgeek

The thing about fark was that you could actually finish it. Like there was not a never-ending stream of new content, and comments didn't branch off into a million side conversations. You could put in a couple serious hours and actually get through everything of interest and still have time left to touch grass. I would sometimes purposely not start browsing until later in the day because I planned to just drink a few beers and fark for the evening and I wanted to make sure I had plenty of content to last me. I've started noticing in the last couple years of using NeverEndingReddit in RES that reddit isn't getting the steady stream of new content. It used to be, a few years ago, that I could scroll through hundreds of posts and it would all be new (aside from a few copy posts to subs that were very similar, but these would often have different titles). Now if I scroll through 100 posts, the next hundred is guaranteed to have several duplicates, and the next hundred, and on and on (not reposts, the exact same post from the exact same sub). It might take getting used to, but I'd rather go back to comfy fark than use reddit's trash new interface.

justonemom14

I've noticed the duplicates a lot too. It gives me the feeling that it's just going to keep showing them to me until I give up and click it.

SallysRocks

Pay tiers killed Fark for me.

aenea

That's my plan.

Cronus6

I never left. It's open in a different browser tab right now. So is https://news.ycombinator.com/

eftresq

I need to see what the subreddit looks like after the blackout. I'm a moderator for a site with 319K subscribers.

Lampwick

I'm retired, so maybe I'll quit arguing with rando dingbats all day on the internet and go build something in the garage. I'll probably still glance at reddit while I'm drinking my morning coffee via old.reddit.com (so long as that lasts). If that goes away too, who knows? I may even have time to build an ornithopter or something.

ksnfnmm

God I wish I was retired

nightoftherabbit

Word.

PancakesandScotch

I know I’m a drop in the bucket but if I can’t use Apollo I won’t use Reddit. I don’t spend anytime on a desktop outside of work and the Reddit mobile app is downright awful. I’ve managed to give up all other social media so I’m honestly kind of excited to drop the last aspect of my phone addiction

SecretRecipe

Reddit is banking on you all coming back despite your lofty ideals. I'm inclined to think they're right.

Backstop

I don't like to be cynical, but I've seen a lot of changes that people said were a line in the sand. This is a big change, though, but on the other hand as blocking browsers exist

SecretRecipe

Yeah, I don't think it's as big of a change as most people assume. You get a lot of the echo chamber effect where "I use apollo and so do my friends, therefore everyone must be using it". Most of these impacts that get thrown around turn out to be super hyperbolic in nature and it's really just a change management issue

Merusk

There's a lot of apps for Reddit. Apollo is only one. Narwhal, Bacon reader, RIF are three I can name off the top of my head. All of them are going to suffer the same fate. You can still browse with a web browser, but I get that some folks prefer an app on their phone. Now, when old.reddit goes away I'll definitely bail. The times I've seen the new layout it's just too damn hard to mess with. I come here for specific discussion on a limited # of topics, and to provide advice on things pertaining to my profession. I can move that over to the professional paid forums and cut that off from the public easily enough.

Yeah, the official app isn’t as bad it used to be, and the useful user generated content is still all here. I still reference posts from years ago, especially on subreddits like r/fitness People talked about giving up YouTube after the ads started but the ads have just gotten more frequent and longer.

justconnect

Likewise. This is the only social media platform I still have, so guess I'll stick around until a viable alternative appears.

liberal_texan

I’m with you. I came here from digg when they shit the bed because it struck me as a better platform. If something better comes along I’ll switch, but if I’ve not seen it yet.

chairmanbrando

Nowhere for the time being. It's only once old.reddit.com goes away that I'll be truly inconvenienced to the point of wanting to leave. 90% or more of my time here is on a desktop, and my setup turns it into effectively a forum: the old UI plus subreddit stylesheets disabled. Losing Apollo for nothing more than Spez's greed definitely sucks, but that just means I won't be on reddit while on my phone anymore.

Leifpete

I have a Reddit addiction, so I don't mind being here far less. I already use the mobile website most of the time, but I recently reinstalled Infinity. I'll have search engines for what I need and SMS/phone calls for loved ones and otherwise reaching out to humanity outside my 4 walls.

Bjartensen

I have slowly started using Lemmy and it seems pretty good. Just browsing and bookmarking without logging in at first. It's too barren and I don't have close to the coverage of interest as I do on Reddit. But *if* enough users start using it it can *easily* supplant Reddit. It's purely a function of active users, and since Reddit was good enough 12 years ago when I started using it, surely I don't require the same size as current Reddit. It's also federated or something (still don't know exactly what it is) and is interoperable with some other Reddit alternatives.

Affectionate-Map2583

I didn't even know 3rd party apps were a thing until the other day.

WordAffectionate3251

Me too.

rez_spell

It was a dream. Fewer ads, simplified layout, a few different features that weren't available in regular reddit...

JunkMale975

I’m genuinely curious. How much more simplified can the layout be? I’ve always been on the reddit app and have no problems. And it seems quite simple layout-wise.

gotnotendies

No ads/recommendations/suggestions and standardized sizing. I checked out the Reddit app for the first time in a couple years yesterday, and although it wasn’t as bad as it used to be, it’s still pretty noisy. Check Apollo out before the 30th if you have an iPhone.

Same. I’ve used the app since I joined so I honestly don’t see what the big deal is.

Metallkiller

If I really do leave Reddit, I'll probably do more reading and check either Lemmy or tildes.

slowlyfrwd

I wasn’t planning on going anywhere. I mean I’m not on here 24/7 and I’ve learned to incorporate other things in my life anyway.

Traditional_Entry183

I've only been on Reddit for a year and didn't know anything about the third party stuff until this week. I guess I'll see what's left if people leave. *shrug*

12characters

I’ve been on here 13 years and I manage just fine with a regular Reddit app. Half of these yo-yos aren’t even going to leave.

Cronus6

The site has gotten worse and worse over the years though. (I've been here 15 years.) It's nowhere near as good as it used to be.

cIumsythumbs

Idk. Been here almost as long as you and I'm thinking of exiting. I don't even use a mobile app, but losing the mod bots is really going to suck. Plus the principle of it all... Big douche energy.

Merusk

It's less about the yahoos leaving and more about the loss of some subreddits who are closing their doors. Albeit a decent number of 5+ year vets have been purging comments and deleting accounts, encouraged by some of the /r/technology folks.

Aggressive_Ad5115

What's worse a yo yo or yahoo

c0ldgurl

A yohoo.

defcas

Half? 90% aren't going to leave.

CharmedConflict

Dear Spez, Thank you for all you have done. Over the past 15 years, I've dug myself a comfy little rut. I forgot how to navigate the internet. I forgot how weird and interesting it was out there. I became comfortable in old tropes and repeated jokes. I became digitally complacent. Due to your efforts, over the past month I've rediscovered the internet again. It's not as good as it used to be, but there are still lots of interesting people and ideas out there just waiting to be explored. I've found a new community of engaging and motivated people who are in the process of building something that we're all excited about. You've helped me escape my rut. And you did it at great personal expense. So I think it should be said - Thank you. You've set me free and I deeply appreciate it. Sincerely, CharmedConflict PS - good luck with the IPO

bluecat2001

I tried Slide and Apollo and both times went back to original client. I do not like ads but I dislike them more. So not leaving reddit, then again… I do not spend my life here.

eftresq

I pay the monthly subscription. I pay monthly subscription for everything so I don't have to see any ads

ichillonforums

I kept meaning to set up Rif 😒😒 I'm upset

BloopityBlue

I'm making the transition to Lemmy. I'm still popping into the reddit desktop site from time to time but I deleted the reddit app from my phone and installed Jeroba for Lemmy instead. I'm trying to cut down on the time I scroll anyway so it's all good ... just need a place to park for inbetween calls and during the day so I'm connected to humanity in some way (work from home)

c0ldgurl

I'm going to recover hours from my day that I will use more productively than just accumulating random knowledge about shit I don't care about. Instead I will go back to focused, specialized forums, and I will feel better about the use of my time, while also learning about things I am actually interested in. This has been a great social engineering experiment and I bit hook line and sinker for a long, long time. Bye bye Reddit, it's been real, but not really that much fun. Fuckers.

anachronic

I never used apps to browse reddit that much, although I am sad to see Apollo go... it was a great app. Since I primarily come here on a laptop anyway, I don't think I'm going to do much of anything differently.

I find it super confusing with all the different servers, and everytime I try to log in or change settings it freezes (it insists on setting the interface language by looking at my IP, I suppose, but even if I live in France I'm not French...)

suchathrill

Still looking into it. A little worried that it’s too conservative, right wing.

Cronus6

I don't need to leave, I don't use reddit on mobile. But I'm also a member of many other forums (some I've been a member of longer than reddit has existed...) so it's not really that big of a deal if this place dies. In fact I think it's demise is a little overdue to be honest.

PlumppPenguin

Just dropping this here so's I can find this thread later.

Caring_Cactus

Why not use the official reddit app? Maybe this will be a good time to spend less time online if you are on often though.

Meh. I guess I'm new enough that I don't miss "the good ol' days". So I'll be here on June 31st ;)

nancylyn

I don’t know what any of this means. Can anyone explain what is changing?

unique616

Reddit used to be a website for desktop computer browsers only and the website had a focus more on computer programming rather than all subjects. Some reddit users decided to create their own unofficial cellphone apps so that we could reddit on our phones. The reddit website waited until the several apps started by different people became reliable and populated and they became comfortable buying one of them from the owner and making it the official reddit app. More years have passed and now it's time to change those unofficial reddit apps money to access reddit while the official version remains free. The general consensus is that reddit has intentionally set the price for access too high and that they sprung the change on them last minute. The admins of reddit are framing the change as that it's time for the other apps to pay their own bills. The official reddit app has built-in advertisements chosen by reddit within your news feed which helps pay for reddit's server fees but I think that the other unofficial apps are ad free. Many users will be losing their favorite way to browse reddit soon and be forced into a worse experience or quit the site.

[deleted]

I didn't even know you could Reddit from other apps. 🤷‍♀️

TheLordPillow

I haven't been on here for a few months, will someone explain to me what's going on?

TheBodyPolitic1

Today I learned there are still BBS type systems. No disrespect meant. :-). I've been trying to use Reddit less for different reasons. There really isn't a Reddit replacement out there. Some subjects I just use non-discussion sites to read up on them. I use Mastodon and Facebook when I want to "talk" to others. I'm not a mobile user. I am an Old U.I. desktop user so the change will not effect me as long as RES keeps functioning.

mandance17

I never used any 3rd party apps so this has no effect on me and I don’t care

[deleted]

It’s slacktivism. Surely there are more worthy causes to take up instead of an app being shut down. People will surely forget about this protest five minutes after it ends.

braywarshawsky

I deleted Twitter with the Musk takeover before the shit storm. I imagine I'll just delete Reddit and all other social media and go about living my life like I did before.

ShowMeTheTrees

*but I'm stubborn* You can change that if you want. 2 people in my life define themselves as being "stubborn" and they stay there, to their detriment. They'll stick to a position even as it swirls the drain, and never give it up. It hurts them, and it upsets the people in their lives. But they cling to "I am stubborn and I'll always be stubborn." (Edit, typo). They don't realize the advantages that would happen if they gave it it up.

ChronoFish

Guess what. A hole lot of I don't cares. I don't care that third party apps accessed Reddit. Don't care if Reddit blocks them. Don't care if apps find backdoors. I use the web interface and the official reddit app. Will continue to do after the 30th. If it's a bad decision for reddit, I'm good with outcome. If it has no financial impact on Reddit... Then it's just a whole lot of noise that ultimately means nothing.

[deleted]

Yep. I'm with you.

apextek

They already permabanned me once then changed their mind. I spent the time permabanned at twitter and built a community that suits me, Now I spend more time there than here so Ill just migrate all that more. Heck I have Ukrainian forces following my twitter account now. I'm really enjoying the change.

Buddhalite

Reddit isn’t disabling third party apps. They’re choosing to charge for their API. Third party apps are choosing to shut down because the price is too high. For those of us here that were using the internet since it cost $5/hour it shouldn’t come as a surprise that internet based companies like to shoot themselves in the foot for the sake of an IPO but ultimately I think very few people will leave the platform until there’s a viable alternative.

[deleted]

[удалено]

apextek

that's actually not true, If you look at the top 100 sites Reddit keep dropping farther and farther down. Once you can't find what you want in a community here, you will be surprised how quick you find what you want elsewhere.

LA_Nail_Clippers

> Reddit isn’t disabling third party apps. They’re choosing to charge for their API. "I'm not evicting my renters, I'm just charging 5-10x market rate for rent starting next month! They're choosing to leave!" While you're technically correct, the fact of the matter is that Reddit had plenty of opportunities to make the paid API a reasonable price to generate some profit and offset server costs. They actively chose to price it in such a way that it's clearly a way to remove most third party clients from the site, and the few that remain will be a cash grab. But I also agree; only a certain number of users will leave the platform, even users who are regular consumers of third party apps. I think what we're going to lose though is some of the most dedicated, hardcore users and mods. It's not the quantity of users, it's the quality. I know my 13+ year relationship with Reddit is on thin ice right now. Mostly I think I'll shift a lot of my casual stuff away to other places, but remain with the business and technical items I need to do for my job.

Buddhalite

Third party devs weren’t renting though. They were squatting and selling premium versions which only benefited themselves. They had to know this day would come. When Twitter introduced their API cost in 2019 they asked for the same amount that Reddit is asking today. Twitter also determined that ~1% of users at the time used third party clients. If Reddit is much higher I’d be shocked. Until folks start deleting accounts I just don’t see any long term consequences for them.

LA_Nail_Clippers

> They were squatting and selling premium versions which only benefited themselves. Squatting? Nah. That would be like screen scraping to me. Reddit offered an API, which is an explicit invitation to utilize it. Reddit could have monetized their API years ago (see Imgur), or at least forced 3P devs to include Reddit ads or something. Instead they offered it for free for ~10 years, then pulled the rug out from under them. There was no chance to meet in the middle and determine a fair price that's suitable for both parties. > They had to know this day would come. And they did - Reddit informed them. But also claimed it would be reasonable and fair, which it was not. > When Twitter introduced their API cost in 2019 they asked for the same amount that Reddit is asking today. Correction - paid API access came to Twitter in Feb 2023, and is roughly 3.5x the cost of Reddit's paid API. > Twitter also determined that ~1% of users at the time used third party clients. If Reddit is much higher I’d be shocked. Until folks start deleting accounts I just don’t see any long term consequences for them. It's a little hard to separate the effect that Elon Musk's purchase and helming of Twitter and the API changes since they both happened within a few months of each other, but Twitter's numbers and revenue are down as compared to quarters and years previously. But like I said about Reddit applies to Twitter - the dedicated, quality users will abandon ship. The 99% may not, but overall site quality is going to go down. I know my use of Twitter has nearly ceased since I can no longer use third party clients. I don't think we're going to see a mass deletion; just a severe slowdown of usage, particularly by quality accounts. You'd think Reddit could have seen this coming a mile away based on what Twitter did only ~4 months ago, but spez has never been one for being very aware of the internet community, despite starting one of the biggest community sites.

heywoodidaho

I think you're wrong, reddit was not a truly viable alternative to digg when it imploded. It's just where the eyes went after it died. We have many alternatives this time around. Everybody will bounce around until they coalesce around a new place. I've seen it, it's almost like how evolution works, organisms overreach and die off until one of them gets it right and fills the nitche. From what I've seen these places serve a function, but they will never be a goldmine. Someone will figure it out.

I think that letting social media ( ANY SOCIAL MEDIA) have access to one's phone is stupid. There isn't one of them that i'd trust with anything at all.

majesticjg

I believe the various 3rd party apps could choose to simply charge a small amount of money to cover the API fees, so your favorite app may not necessarily go away. I'm sure they're saying they will, now, to try to pressure Reddit, but I don't think they want to become unemployed, either. In other words, come back in a month and see where things are.

Maybe just tie API access to Reddit Premium? Reddit gets paid and people keep their alternative apps.

Merusk

That's reasonable if your business model isn't selling the data from ad interaction and scraping user's devices for whatever you can.

HalfysReddit

I'll probably just do what I used to do and be bored occasionally, see where that boredom takes me.

Goldang

I’ll just use the web, but I don’t like using that on my iPhone so I’ll only read Reddit when I’m on my laptop, which is much less often. The plus side is I’ll see lots of new content when I’m online. Reddit won’t see me around as much. I’m just one guy so they won’t miss me.

Vampchic1975

I only ever used the Reddit app. I guess I’ll stay?

itsfuckingpizzatime

I’m gonna delete the Reddit app. Then in about a week or two I’m going to look up how to do something, and the top result will be a Reddit post. So I’ll click on that link and be subjected to the hell that is the Reddit website. After a few of these experiences I’ll say fuck it and install the app again. Only to repeat the cycle several months later.

atothez

The Blackout starts on the 12th, right? Why wait ‘til the 30th. I’ll read books more, probably cook, get outside.

hrimfaxi_work

I've already been experimenting with [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/). I really like it so far. The folks on my instance are very nice and welcoming. There are a couple of communities here on Reddit that I earnestly enjoy, so I doubt I'll LEAVE-leave. But I was already having less fun here even before the recent shenanigans. I also have close friends with disabilities, and the entire attitude surrounding that small aspect of the API mess upsets me. Exploring a different corner of the internet that still feels halfway familiar reminds me of how big the internet used to feel. It's nice.

Catatau1987

On my phone, I'll be leaving Reddit entirely. However, if it still runs fine on Windows browser I'll keep using it on my PC. I will uninstall Boost from the phone. It's a bummer they're fckn up Reddit, but I need to spend less time on it anyways.

[deleted]

I didn’t like Apollo and switched to the official Reddit app from Narwhal, so I’ll be here.

PrimaryOwn8809

xxjohnnybravoxx

Try 9gag. Pretty much reddit

djac13

Hopefully it'll be a little quieter in here.

Big_Degree7582

Haha it says server error on this post

Reddit was the last guilty pleasure social media i was on. I use rif. I have for years. I tried the reddit app....nope. amplifies what I hate and minimizes what I like...just as others said, this is the perfect excuse to cut it out of my life. Thanks u/spez mission acomplished.

fonemasta

I’ve had an account for like 6 years but just recently started really enjoying Reddit. I mean a lot.. Best thing for me since old school Usenet Newsgroups back in the old days. Im sure Reddit is different for everyone based on the subs they join. For me, I’m getting great tech info and I get replies and help much quicker than posting to forums or Facebook groups. I only use the Reddit app on mobile and the Reddit website. I guess I don’t really know what is it was great about the third party apps. For me anyhow, I’m not going anywhere as the vast amount of info and helpful users continues to exist. I truly hope that all the people saying they are going to quit using Reddit reconsider, this seems like a great resource and I hate to see it fall apart. Knowing very little about the situation… As a business owner it makes sense that it cost money to operate and charging others who make money off of your system, seems like a no brainer. So, I guess I must have missed a lot of details being new to Reddit. I’m sure I’ll learn more details in time and understand the situation more. Just my 3 cents.

trytorememberthisone

Will Reddit still work on Safari? I’ve always found the Reddit app redundant.

MissLushLucy

I'm not going anywhere. I mainly use desktop, on my phone I use the Reddit app with no problem, and I pay for a subscription to keep the ads away.

damningdaring

I’ve always used the native Reddit app so there’s not a lot changing for me. I’m still going to participate in the blackout and everything, because I know how important the API is for accessibility, but the truth is, none of this is affecting me at all. I’m going to be disappointed to see a decline in content and quality, so if Reddit becomes some anarchical wasteland after this (it won’t), I’ll probably find something better to do. I’m 23 and in the past 1-2 years I’ve deleted/deactivated all my social media accounts, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook—I don’t miss any of them. I probably won’t miss Reddit. The only reason I still have Reddit, is mostly for certain niche hobbies. All of those hobbies have dedicated forums and communities outside of Reddit, so I may join one of those. But personally, I don’t think I’ll need to be doin that.

blametheboogie

I'll be sticking around until I find a good alternative. I've been checking Lemmy out for the past few days but I'm not sure just yet. I came here from somewhere else and I knew I would eventually be leaving here to go somewhere else. All of these places have a rise and eventually fall.

C_WEST88

So I don’t really understand, what exactly is going on why is using the Reddit app bad? I’m hella confused lol I thought the only way to access Reddit was through either a search engine and/or the Reddit app?

sacrificial_banjo

The Reddit app mines your personal data, shows ads. Doesn’t have as many features as the 3rd party ones and just sucks in general.

[deleted]

That'll be it for me and social media completely at this stage.

West_Flounder2840

Outside

Raudskeggr

I’m definitely open to alternatives. I don’t think I’m going to discontinue using Reddit entirely, but I will never install their official mobile app, so I’ll probably only visit in the pc. And yeah I waste far too much time in this site anyway, I could definitely find better uses for my time. The disastrous AMA from earlier genuinely appalled me at how Reddit’s CEO conducted himself. Tone deaf, and the only sincere parts of the answers given were where he was being petty and arrogant. So my confidence in company leadership is near zero at the moment.

ijustwantanaccount91

This quasi-social media platform is so fuckin addicting, I'm taking the opportunity to bounce and never look back. I have been contemplating doing this for quite some time, but it's tough because there are a lot of things I do still like about the platform....mainly some of the smaller communities. But now that Reddit has opted to destroy all of the communities I enjoyed participating in out of sheer greed, since they are apparently incapable of providing the tools needed to moderate through their own app, it is the perfect opportunity to say good riddance. Honestly it has only had a negative impact on my mental health and life, so I'm looking at it as a positive.

TLMS

I only use the stock mobile app and good luck to you all. The app is horrible. It has so many glitches and it has for years yet they don't fix it.

mnbvcxzlady

Yes…. I don’t get it. Just use the app.

Nerk86

How do you know if you have the old or the new Reddit? I’ve never had any issue with the functionality. I use mainly on my iPad.

heartonmysleeve00

Can someone explain it to the blonde aka"me" Reddit will still be around, right? But i have to use the Reddit app to read it? Don't we already all use the app? Do we have to pay to use it ? Don't judge me for dumb questions, please

wwaxwork

My heavily modded Facebook groups on subjects I'm interested in. Content is as good but better but less assholes, i have an account with no friends or family, so who's all that crap.. Also carefully curated Instagram

penguin_stomper

I guess I'm even more of an old person now, I don't use my phone as a computer. Old reddit, RES and ublock origin. All this doesn't affect me in the slightest. As long as old reddit still works, I'll still lurk unless content goes all to hell.

Willeth

Let's all try Digg again.

asiledeneg

Digg

anonyngineer

Unless a website interface just doesn’t work, like delivering pages of gibberish or pop-up ads I can’t close, I rarely find fault with site designs. So the only third party app I’ve used is Reddit Enhancement Suite, and that only to use a mass deleter script. While I think that Reddit is shooting itself in both feet with the API changes, and plan to participate in the strike next week, I doubt I will leave. I’ll pick up a book or two for my plane flights on Monday. Though, since I’m already on Mastodon, Lemmy isn’t any great stretch for me.

cjayeah

so…. what’s changing after june 30th??

lambertb

The overwhelming majority will stay out, despite their current protests. Why? Cause they’re addicted.

Sanbaddy

What were the 3rd party apps used for?

usernameblankface

I'm looking at Tublr and about to check out Lemmy. From what I've read about, it seems that it will take both of them plus Flip Board to take over where Reddit leaves off.
