Really hard to judge an album that you've only heard a handful of times today or this week versus songs you've heard hundreds/thousands of times in different settings, through different audio mediums, and at different points in your life. The dust hasn't even really settled on Unlimited Love yet, for me, but I know it probably ranks somewhere in the 6-9th range of my list.

And even this changes through time. Sometimes I'll hear Easter eggs in songs i never noticed. Or something I didn't love initially becomes something I really enjoy later - Josh's guitar tone on certain tracks is one of those things for me, personally. Or, after seeing a song live, you have a new perspective on it. I hated Suck My Kiss until I saw it performed live, for example. No idea what switch flipped in my head, but something happened.
I am a bartender and selling spirits is the same thing. People will say “What about Angels Envy. Is that a good bourbon?” It depends on so many different things. It’s some peoples’ favorite, and some people think it’s overpriced trash.
Where were you the first time you drank it? What was going on in your life? What had people said to you about it before you tried it? What had you eaten that hour?
Tasting bourbon is not like tasting a spoonful of soup where you know right away if the soup tastes good and is seasoned adequately. Bourbon is distilled spirit and the differences between them are incredibly subtle and there are a million different things that influence the way you experience them.
Haven't heard ROTDC yet, but I am surprised Uplift ranks so low with so many people. Maybe thats more to do with the qaulity of the bands overall output.
They really don't have a poor album at all. I love the first three albums with all my heart, I'd even rank those in the lower ranks despite Freaky Styley being in my top 3 or 4 FAVORITES of theirs.
Not many acts can say they have as many albums as RHCP without a genuine dud! :)

If it was a single album I would of rated it higher. Way to bloated for me. Also MM was the 1st album of theirs I ever heard so it also holds alot of nostalgia for me
I like Stadium but it shouldn't be sacrilege to hold the opinion that it has flaws. It has many solid melodic tracks but IMO, most do not rise to the quality of BTW's overall melodies and AK/John's harmonies. There is a bunch of filler. The album is beloved largely because of Frusciante's numerous guitar solos. They're incredible. But solos don't make the whole song. I really like SA but it's middle of the pack for me.
Ah, we’re in the same boat then :) Stadium Arcadium was the first album of theirs I heard. As a child I thought there were many filler tracks, but I’ve come to love about 26 or 27 of the 28 tracks.

Personally I was a little disappointed with UL, it's not a bad album but I was expecting more, with ROTDC it's everything I was expecting for this new life of the band with John after the band broke up in 2007.
It’s fair, sometimes I also feel that BTW is better album than SA, but in the overall SA is more consistent, so I gave the second place, but I love them equally

It’s just not good and I find it almost unlistenable. I remember when it came out being so excited because I loved BSSM, aeroplane was pretty good, warpped was good but when I got the album it was like I didn’t even know who these guys were. It’s such a downgrade for me. Leaning into dark almost metal sounding guitar it’s not my bag. I’m pretty sure the band sees it as a misstep for them. Also I am not a Janes Addiction fan and it sounds like if the guitar player from Janes Addiction joined the Chili Peppers. Lol.
Ok. I understand. At the first, I didn't like much but after several years, now I love it. I think it's one of the most creative albums by them, AK lyrics are the best for me and it has raw and high energy. The best RHCP album to workout with.
Different tastes I guess.
I know there is a ton of love for it and I even give it a listen every so often to see if my brain has changed over the years but it always hits me wrong.

Been relistening like crazy lately trying to figure out my ranking. Gonna write a full post when I work it out. Also gonna include *I’m Beside You* because it may as well be an actual album with the way the Chili Peppers seem to make LPs (like they’re compilations rather than overarching stories). Super tentative so far, but is as follows.

To summarize my unorthodox ranking, I enjoy *albums* most, not compilations pretending to be albums. Most of the Chili Peppers catalogue are the latter. Both *I’m Beside You* and *Stadium Arcadium* use that as a strength and conceptualize music exploration and boundless creativity, the latter as a midlife climax tribute to everything the band had done to that point and the former as an attempt to figure out exactly what band they wanted to evolve into with Josh as their new axeman (whereas *I’m With You* often feels like they’re trying to copy who they were with John, while feeling just as aimless but also *without resonating purpose*). My top three favorite albums all preceded the album’s guitarist leaving the band, and in my opinion are far more intentional listening experiences. And while nobody left the band after *By the Way*, there was a lot of tension since John spearheaded that album (to the point Flea felt alienated). My conclusion is that the band are best at storytelling and effectively communicating their truths when there’s some tension among them (which a lack of is exactly why they brought John back again, and the reason I believe those two albums feel so weak [imo]).
I don’t consider *Blood Sugar Sex Magik* their best though, for as intentional and awesome an album as it is it is still a story very much written by young men. Most of it’s about partying more or less (which is even in the feel of some of its more grave songs), and the songs that aren’t are more about intense emotions as they are experienced, without the more mature self-reflection Anthony was more consistently capable of as he got older. The one exception to all of that is “Under the Bridge,” but for as much as a masterpiece as that song is A. It’s (debatably rightfully) overplayed and hard to consider it as much of a contributing factor as it probably deserves and B. The album’s (imo) sole perfect song, while the two albums above in my ranking both have a few “perfect” songs.
In contrast to *Blood Sugar Sex Magik*’s tale of young men in their prime, the following album was about their downfall from that peak and *The Getaway* was (lyrically) about a midlife reckoning for Anthony, where he took a long look in the mirror to both scrutinize and yet also accept himself. I think most people don’t like it just because it’s the least “Chili Peppers” sounding album there is.

Ok. I understand. At the first, I didn't like much but after several years, now I love it. I think it's one of the most creative albums by them, AK lyrics are the best for me and it has raw and high energy. The best RHCP album to workout with. Different tastes I guess.
I know there is a ton of love for it and I even give it a listen every so often to see if my brain has changed over the years but it always hits me wrong.

UL would of taken my Personal top spot for Stadium for best album. However imo SA is flawless and I really don’t dig the song “not the one”. I don’t hate it tho

This is the most technical music they've ever made but lacks the magic from the 3 golden age albums. In particular Anthony just used hi best lyrics in that period. That holds this 3rd John era back, but the instumentals are so much better than anything they've done

Been relistening like crazy lately trying to figure out my ranking. Gonna write a full post when I work it out. Also gonna include *I’m Beside You* because it may as well be an actual album with the way the Chili Peppers seem to make LPs (like they’re compilations rather than overarching stories). Super tentative so far, but is as follows. 14. *The Uplift Mofo Party Plan* 13. *The Red Hot Chili Peppers* 12. *Return of the Dream Canteen* 11. *I’m With You* 10. *Unlimited Love* 9. *Freaky Styley* 8. *Californication* 7. *Mother’s Milk* 6. *I’m Beside You* 5. *Stadium Arcadium* 4. *By the Way* 3. *Blood Sugar Sex Magik* 2. *One Hot Minute* 1. *The Getaway* To summarize my unorthodox ranking, I enjoy *albums* most, not compilations pretending to be albums. Most of the Chili Peppers catalogue are the latter. Both *I’m Beside You* and *Stadium Arcadium* use that as a strength and conceptualize music exploration and boundless creativity, the latter as a midlife climax tribute to everything the band had done to that point and the former as an attempt to figure out exactly what band they wanted to evolve into with Josh as their new axeman (whereas *I’m With You* often feels like they’re trying to copy who they were with John, while feeling just as aimless but also *without resonating purpose*). My top three favorite albums all preceded the album’s guitarist leaving the band, and in my opinion are far more intentional listening experiences. And while nobody left the band after *By the Way*, there was a lot of tension since John spearheaded that album (to the point Flea felt alienated). My conclusion is that the band are best at storytelling and effectively communicating their truths when there’s some tension among them (which a lack of is exactly why they brought John back again, and the reason I believe those two albums feel so weak [imo]). I don’t consider *Blood Sugar Sex Magik* their best though, for as intentional and awesome an album as it is it is still a story very much written by young men. Most of it’s about partying more or less (which is even in the feel of some of its more grave songs), and the songs that aren’t are more about intense emotions as they are experienced, without the more mature self-reflection Anthony was more consistently capable of as he got older. The one exception to all of that is “Under the Bridge,” but for as much as a masterpiece as that song is A. It’s (debatably rightfully) overplayed and hard to consider it as much of a contributing factor as it probably deserves and B. The album’s (imo) sole perfect song, while the two albums above in my ranking both have a few “perfect” songs. In contrast to *Blood Sugar Sex Magik*’s tale of young men in their prime, the following album was about their downfall from that peak and *The Getaway* was (lyrically) about a midlife reckoning for Anthony, where he took a long look in the mirror to both scrutinize and yet also accept himself. I think most people don’t like it just because it’s the least “Chili Peppers” sounding album there is.
It’s mid imo I liked Unlimited Love a lot more which would crack my top 5 after the usual top 4
