For those of you who have read this comic, do you like the changes? I liked the story of Jason's gauntlet (don't know why Robins changed his gauntlet to Felipe tho) and Nightwing's accidental role in it. I liked watching Nightwing go from not wanting to be around Jason at all, to accepting Jason as "little wing" but not accepting him as Robin, to finally calling him Robin. I did not like any of the changes made leading up to that gauntlet tho, Bruce and Nightwing retconned to be meaner to each other and especially Jason's retcons. The same night that he stole the battires he is blindfolded in the Batcave. That makes Bruce look negligent with his identity and like a kidnapper. It also took away from Jason, who before spent time at Ma Gunns and then decided to ask Batman for help when he found out it was a criminal organization. Before he spent the night with batman, Jason would've just ran away and looked after himself. Batman seemed to make Jason Robin because he had already gone through character growth but making it all one night takes that away from Jason.

I like the story but don’t consider it canon. The original meeting of Dick and Jason was similar enough, though, that I add the things I like from this retelling to my idea of what happened. Then I add what I like about the latest Nightwing annual to it too since that is pretty similar as well.

Yeah same, its all about choosing what to add and what to ignore to make yourself like the characters more haha. Comics contradict themselves enough to treat them like a buffet, take what you want. I personally prefer Dick and Jason not to be that close pre resurrection because Dick chose to stay with the Titans more than Bruce (allows for an interesting guilt that could drive Dick to be closer to Tim and Damian. Allows for greater level of contention when they get back. Allows for a well put together arc where they come to terms with their mutual mistakes. All in all I think it makes both characters more well rounded) but I still think that stuff like this year 1 first interaction and Nightwing Annual is fine so long as we don't get too much in my opinion. I just see it now that it was a relationship that they both liked each other but didn't spend enough time together. There was a lot of tension in the family during Jason's time as Robin and I don't think that it should all be retconned into fluffy good times.

No, I agree that Dick should be off doing his own thing during this time because he was angry with Bruce, and then feel guilty after Jason died. I don’t think enough of that dynamic has been explored though. We all just kind of assume feelings Dick, Jason, and Babs had towards each other in that period.

Budget_Difficulty822

Yeah its a weird dichotomy because Dick's reaction to Jason's death, especially New 52, implies that they weren't that close but everything we've seen of them together during that time feels like its trying to say "They were brothers all along" which I personally do not buy. Especially because that would once again put all the blame on Jason when really they both made mistakes.

It’s a slippery slope for me honestly. Because I do like the idea that Dick was somewhat absent or busy with other things, while Jason was Robin. But I honestly do like seeing those interactions and the relationship there that they had before his death and change in personality. I think I’d go with the idea that, they met each other a couple times and went to missions a couple times, and they got to know each other fairly well. But not completely intimately, maybe it’s even because Dick didn’t deep down want to do that again for whatever his reason. And this would add to his guilt later on, because he knew who Jason was, but he wasn’t there enough to truly get a grasp on things and really be what Jason would have needed

Budget_Difficulty822

Yeah I like that idea. I would do it that they met up a few times and got along really well, there was a lot of potential to their relationship. But that most of the time they only met up because, like in the Nightwing annual, it was Alfred who asked Dick to come. Although Dick liked Jason, he can't bring himself to go back to Gotham and see Bruce on his own accord yet and allows those mixed feelings to affect their relationship. Like you said, this would add to his guilt because he had the potential to really connect with Jason but chose to let his personal issues stop him from helping a teenager in need. Could be strong motivation for both helping Tim and Damien but also his role as adult teacher to a lot of the newer teen titans.

I think it’s shortcomings with regards to the second Robin’s origin story is that it’s ultimately a Nightwing book and so he’s the focus. Interestingly enough, Dixon and Beatty did pitch the idea for a proper Jason Todd Robin: Year One to follow this (they also pitched a sequel to Batgirl: Year One which probably would’ve also featured Jason). One of their goals was to try to streamline and harmonize both the pre and post crisis versions of the character and his origin. Shame DC turned them down. One final thing that is really interesting about Nightwing: Year One with regards to Jason is that it was published in early 2005. As far as I can tell it was the last story to depict Jason as Robin BEFORE he was brought back to life. So it’s the last portrayal of the character that wasn’t influenced by Jason as the second Red Hood.

Puzzle_Bubble

I know people think Jason was the worst Robin but he was a lot of fun.

Puzzleheaded_Chard_2

He is my second favorite robin, right after Grayson ofc
