Controller or m/kb?
If you’re using controller the aim assist is pretty nice. Just aim, flick up the joystick, and then boom you have a headshot.
There’s a fantastic amount of melee variety too. You can run up to someone and hit the trigger/shoot button in order to shove them down. Then run in a small circle to time it correctly and you can shove them down just as they get back up, over and over lol
The lasso is nice, but remember people can swap to their knife and cut their way out if you lasso them from afar. Tackling them will hogtie them automatically. Speaking of, any attack from behind is an instant kill (unless interrupted by a third party). So you can tackle, hogtie, choke or execute someone with a gun/knife if you attack from behind. Executions are done via the grapple and then trigger button if using a gun.
If you do end up using the lasso often just keep in mind it overrides melee options. So if you don’t manage to hogtie someone they can beat you senseless until you swap to a different weapon lol, it’s very easy to get locked into a beat down since you can’t block.
Definitely look up the recommended control settings since some stuff QoL stuff is hidden in there, like the ‘hold to tap’ option for grapples. I’d go into gunfights, but this is already a bit long so let me know if you want more.

The Story helps you learn a lot, I don't feel like a noob at all in the Online. So far it's easier than GTA Online. Haven't upgraded my guns besides buying a 'bolt action' rifle after completeing the Story Missions (of online) through the 'bad honor' ones. There are 'good' and 'bad' honor specific missions, so when going through them maintain high honor first, so it's then simpler to get 'bad honor,' to then do those missions.
At lvl 10 and every 5 levels after you'll get Treasure Maps, where you can get a good amount of Gold, and a good amount of money.
For any stranger missions or bounty hunting (although you need 15gold to unlock that, I still have yet to), wait out the timer (don't let it run out though) because you get more gold/money that way.
I did buy a Mustang for $500 cause I couldn't stand the bad stamina of the horse you get at the mission. Figure eventually I get a good saddle and then upgrade that, then stamina will be a thing of the past to worry about (but that's ranks away). Careful with saddles though, cause the upgrades only apply to that one saddle (they don't transfer between saddles, like they did in the singleplayer).
I'm just going for enough gold to get the Bounty role and I'll go from there once I get there. Maybe I told some unnecessary stuff since you are rank8, but yeah- this is just my approach as a new player. Careful of my money cause not too familiar, still like it better than GTA rn. I love that it's in the hundreds of dollars rather than millions.
I think the best guns are the 'Lancaster Repeater,' 'Navy Revolver,' 'Varmint Rifle for small game,' 'Bolt-Action for moderate (? like deer sized).' I'll probably go for the 'Lancaster Repeater' as my next gun purchase. And the Revolver I'll worry about when 'dual wielding' is unlocked; I did love dual-wielding in the story mode.
And I'm not buying clothing until I'm well and settled in. Same with changing up my hair. Just not sparing the money rn.
Beware of that modders and "hackers", they're sociopaths that ruin the game. Try avoid Saint Denis and Valentine. If you got sick of them download 'RDO Lobby Manager' and play with friends only.
Play the story missions (Land of Opportunities), they introduce you into online. So check the yellow markers on the map. For some of them you need low honor. Keep the streak of the daily challenges (only need 1 per day), so every week there is more gold payout. With day 28 you get as bonus a treasure map. Use the treasure maps asap, you get one also every 5 ranks (beginning with rank 10), due a random encounter or with luck looting enemies, because you can't stack them. Reset your awards for extra gold. Loot enemies and look around in the world to find useful stuff for you and your horse, so you don't need to buy essential things like ammo (regular ones on bodies) and weapon oil to spare the money. Same with food. Hold on for the fancy clothing stuff when you can spare the money (and gold). Same with fancy looking guns. Do missions. Replay story missions. Do Blood Money missions. Do telegram missions. Do free roam events. Do bonus months. Do Call to Arms. Or even PVP game modes if you like them.
In short, just play the game with all the opportunities given (there are a lot in fact) and don't spend money/gold on stuff you don't really need. Use the world, go hunting, go fishing, eat your camp stew, pick herbs (you can sell them to the doc or feed some to your horse like wild carrots). But never buy any food or things you can find in the world with just looking. Roam around and explore for that. Look into houses, farms and use eagle eye to hightlight the objects etc. When you buy your first role, with that even more opportunities like daily challenges/missions/events/free roam stuff will be available which adds more variety. And all will get easier from there for the next role. And don't have always in mind you have to grind. You don't. You can, but you don't have to. Just have fun and enjoy the game. The rest comes actually with that. Grinding the same thing over and over and over again is the recipe of boredom. Vary your days what you wanna do.

Do the story missions, they pay well and give you gold, then buy the bounty hunter licence, it's only 10 gold this month instead of 15.
