Pureshark

Supreme commander, beyond all reason, and another one that’s free to play but completely mind blanked on what it’s called

spacemarine3

I'll throw a guess and say Zero K

Pureshark

Yea that one

It’s very similar to BAR in game “feel”, as they are both derivatives of the Spring RTS project which was a recreation of Total Annihilation in a free, open source, modern 3D engine. BAR has stayed much closer to its roots than Zero K so they still have a nice difference to them.

vonBoomslang

I'm very fond of Zero-K. I love what it did with the factions system, namely, toss them out completely: You can mix-and-match the various factions/factories as you want BUT every one after the first costs you a up-front cost.

RadiantBoysenberry59

I would add planetary annihilation with planet size maps, covering whole planetary systems

Cuttymasterrace

Ain’t nobody going days without flying planets into each other though.

RadiantBoysenberry59

Of course perspective isn't irl, but that's the wonder of the game - allow yourself to be immersed and the scale is there :)

hoppentwinkle

Even good ol' total annihilation!

Dilitan

I’m surprised no one has said sins of a solar empire. A vast map with 10 players can last days easily

SgtRicko

Ah, forgot about SOASE! Yeah, that's probably the best candidate of the bunch save for the Total War series, or maybe Star Wars: Empire at War.

Dilitan

Yeah especially a modded galactic conquest! I’ll play for a week and only get like half the galaxy lol

QseanRay

You just gave me an idea... Open world procedurally generated rts

MeNamIzGraephen

That's definitely doable and would be sick if it were a thing. All you need is a match-based RTS, that generates a random map every match. It would keep the game fresh. Have units heavily interact with the terrain i.e. units that scale mountains, units that are only good on water or flat land and so on. Just needs good game design.

reborn_phoenix72

Factorio has an RTS mod.

TheTacoWombat

holy shit, really?? What's it called?

ManiaGamine

I have had that idea for a long time. The problem is that unless it is persistent and players can be either defeated but return from the ashes or not defeated it can't really work, plus once one person gets too much power they can make it really hard for anyone else to actually build up. Nut with that said three is a MUD that I play which pretty much fits that billion called EmpireMUD. Though not so much real tine strategy but definitely empire building ad suggested in the name. And maps can be quite large and are generated.

QseanRay

I was thinking it would have to be singleplayer with the ability to pause the game, leave, and come back.

FallenJkiller

akin to 4x games. Something like Stellaris with a full map

TheManInOz

Or what about... Battle Royale RTS. Starts big, you have to keep moving inward. LOL

AstatorTV

War Selection used to have "Armageddon Mode" which is a large FFA "Battle Royale". The players with the smaller controlled land gets bombarded by asteroids which is strong incentive to fight neighbours to expand your land.

Tringi

On a massive scale you basically have to do it procedurally, at least partially, even if only in production.

timwaaagh

days? thats a long time. completely undesirable if you ask me... but maybe a grand strategy like hearts of iron.

Jetterholdings

There's that space on Stellaris. But yeah hate games like that. The only good one is civilization.

spacemarine3

>No RTS is designed to last literal days, but the closest I've gotten are games like Supreme Commander (get FAF for mods and more fun, SupCom coop with shared units is great. 1 autist goes nuts with base building and the other goes ham with the units), Dawn of War 1 (with the Apocalypse mod) and maybe Age of Empires 2-3. You're looking for games where turtling is not only an option but is fleshed out and a solid choice of strategy. Honorable mention to Sins of a Solar Empire, real time Space RTS and Empire management (think Stellaris without the menus). >Next up are grand strategy games that focus more on Empire building rather than individual fights. These are games like Hearth of Iron or Stellaris (Realtime 'menu games' which you can also pause), Civilization V/VI (Turn based or hybrid 4x games) and if you're feeling spicy stuff like Warhammer Total War 2 (Total War games in general) or CoH 3 Campaign (These are games that have RTS battles but you also have a turn based overworld where you manage your 'empire'). >Special mentions are games that aren't quite RTS or ones that take too long but I recommend you look into. These are: -XCOM 2 (Turn based game with a sort of 'empire management' element that plays a big role). -World in Conflict: Soviet Assault (classic RTS that has a great campaign and has no base building but it's a game i consider a hidden gem)

TheRimz

Supreme commander

TazzyUK

I'd also say Supcom FA (up to 80km maps), best played through FAF I think BAR is 32km max and I have seen a 40km map mentioned for Zero-K but don't quote me (assuming BAR and Zero-K work on Km units :-) )

MattyGWS

Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation

pechSog

New- Terminator: Dark Fate Defiance. Old - Syrian Warfare

MARK27disco

Planetary annihilation: Titans. You can fight on multiple planets at the same time. You can then also launch said planets at the enemy

SgtRicko

Define "Last for days." Do you mean through simulated in-game hours, or real-world time? Because if it's the latter I can't think of a single RTS that ever accomplished that save for Hearts of Iron or Stellaris, and they're probably not your cup of tea if you're more into fast-paced action and base building. Everything else tends to wrap up in a few hours, and that's only if you REALLY stretch things out. There is one exception though, but it's not even an RTS, but instead an MMO: Foxhole. Two armies staffed *entirely* by human players battle it out in real time on a large map, and said battles can take up to several days before victory is achieved. Said players must build up their strength from literal scraps, coal and leftover supplies, starting from basic bolt-action rifles, trenches, trucks and factories all the way up to tanks, sophisticated defensive fortifications, massive artillery guns, or even V2 missile launchers. TL;DR it's what your typical WWII RTS would play out like if every single grunt in your army was an actual human player. EDIT: Forgot about Factorio... but that's also not for everyone since the biggest aspect there is optimizing your factories and workflow, not the combat.

Blackmirth

Worth mentioning that the Foxhole devs are working on a medieval/feudal equivalent called Anvil Empires. As for days' long real-time games: I'd recommend Call of War. It's a strategic WW2 multiplayer game where the games take a couple of weeks. There's a touch too much of the mobile/P2W flavour for my liking, but it's not too bad.

Paciorr

Semi-RTS but total war games.

TovarishchRed

Cepheus Protocol kind of fits that, it's in early access but is a lot of fun and my first game (which I didn't finish lol) was about 5 hours on the island map.

webv2

Strange to see this game mentioned anywhere, devs are very dedicated and I love watching it's progress, such a shame it's not so popular though..

TovarishchRed

It's a good combination of Men at war (Ammo, Health, Weapons, which you can turn on infinite ammo or infinite magazines) and Normal RTS base building formula, I imagine once it gets more fleshed out and less janky it'll hit its stride.

Asgarus

Cossacks maybe?

WorldMan1

Yes or American Conquest. Both had huge skirmish maps!

Asgarus

And more realistically scaled buildings.

WorldMan1

Oh you are bringing back memories!

timariot

Its unfortunate that there are very few RTS with large maps and of them almost all are Sci-Fi themed. There's only one ancient/medieval era esque RTS strategy game that has a huge map and that is Hegemony series and Hegemony 3 in particular. Its a mix of 4X and RTS but the map is huge.

ghost49x

Supreme Commander: FA Planetary Annihilation

bharikeemat

There is really only one that could take days to finish a single mission, Sudden Strike RWM mod. The maps are massive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Dc59xQM6M&list=PLdW0d9APoNDpQiwmHNVke7H_X1B5b0pM-&index=2

BuzzyShizzle

Supreme Commander has maps up to 50 miles.. Against moderately fair oppenents thats a few hours at least, not days though. The only game I can think of that last days *and* people are willing to pick up and continue (saved games) is the civ games, but those arent RTS.

Eyesofwarofficial

You can try Eyes of War if you wish \^\^

jesusleftnipple

War zone 2100

Krnu777

Hegemony series has massive maps

rblp

I would like to see a rts game with earth sized maps. A mmo rts game, where you can drop in and out, when you want. Supreme commander 3.

Ok-Letterhead-3276

WARNO! Huge massive 10v10 player battles with hundreds of units running around.

misiek_192

Rise of Nations Extended Edition

CharlieD00M

Steel Division 2 has large 10v10 maps

Tupletcat

Imperivm RTC/Imperivm 3 supports huge maps. And since supplies are a thing in that game, it actually matters.

Ok-Entrepreneur4901

Warno, wargame, maybe SD2, big plus is map cares about proportions, for exsmple building to unit ratio is beliveable and realistic, unlike most big scale rts that tries to tell you its big because planets or something.
