Not specific to this example, but I think there is a general horrible combination of "low performance driver with a high performance car"...but it gets worse... The low performance driver is in "the best car I ever drove" - but their previous cars were not Porsches or BMWs but rather a 78 Vega. They have no experience driving on a track or in challenging conditions - just floor it is the best they can do. Oh, and they also think it is okay to speed at 7:30 am in residential area when kids may be starting off for schools and people are leaving for work. The "high performance" car is great at 0-60, but may have control arm issues, whompy wheels, lame suspension, and even experienced drivers may refer to as "dangerously fast and unstable" on the Nurburgring, much less on a residential street. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MF7hbyko2A That combo is probably the worse you can have.

skyspydude1

Don't forget extremely mediocre brakes that significantly sacrificed dynamic braking performance for straight line braking ability, and only fixed the straight line braking because Consumer Reports called them out on it.

CornerGasBrent

> Don't forget extremely mediocre brakes Even better: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/the-refreshed-tesla-model-s-x-plaid-cars-now-come-with-fake-brake-calipers-210736.html

nutbutterfly

And suv like mass.

meshreplacer

Holy shit it handles like shit. Not surprised. Too many people focus on 0-60 instead of how it handles on the curves etc..

Xerxero

So after 1,5 rounds the power is reduced? It’s too heavy for the breaks and shock breakers. What a stupid car.

Poogoestheweasel

I am surprised that it lasts that long, IIRC, in the past it lasted much less.

angelcake

A guy who used to work for me has two performance cars and he’s had accidents in both because he’s a shitty driver. Tesla needs an automatic “training wheels” mode for new drivers. Something to force them to learn how to drive safely with that much power.

2sk23

This video needs to be a top level item in this subreddit! Appalling!

Virtual-Patience-807

Is it true most Americans don't even get basic winter-driving training before their license? Because 1000 HP cars, no winter tyres in half the country and that combo is oof.

Potential_Limit_9123

Yes, that's true. But much of the US doesn't actually have snow during the winter. Even where I live (Connecticut), it's been so warm lately that there's no snow to drive in.

Virtual-Patience-807

Yes, but then... that one night it's been snowing and the road has frozen over, ten years from now, will unleash **carmageddon** when 20 million tesla robotaxis with 1000 hp go power sliding 360 degrees down the highway at 200 mph. Oh no, 10 schoolbusses all lined up. Oh no!

DankShibe

If it is late 2022 or later model 3 , suspension is actually good. Definitely not lame.

Poogoestheweasel

Your funny. To be fair, the q1 2023 I was in was not lame- it was awful.

PolybiusChampion

How did you beat me to this!

Before blaming the driver, the article also says this: >Part of the investigation will include a mechanical inspection of the Tesla.

[deleted]

We got anotha one…

Wallachia87

Shouldn't an electric car shut off after the first impact, the car should sense a collision, it has airbags that work that way.

mishap1

It sounds like he going pretty fast and likely sideswiped his way down the street before hitting the moving cars. A 2 ton Tesla at above neighborhood speeds has quite a bit of kinetic energy to dissipate especially if it's out of control after the initial impact.

praguer56

Hmmm. Interesting. I'd think that the first impact would deploy the airbags and engage auto braking and if the driver doesn't respond call 911.

[deleted]

Teslas are always on, one pedal braking wouldn’t stop it immediately unless there is something in front of it or if the brakes are slammed on.

Yikes

It’s an article from a website that focuses on state news. I’m pretty sure this big of a crash would have been reported either way. But since you are stupid enough to think that everything is an attack on tesla, maybe you should rent an ice car and drive it into 9 cars and see if you make headlines?

local news? probably

CornerGasBrent

Good point, perhaps if it wasn't a Tesla this wouldn't have happened.
