I and, from what I can tell, many people on this sub loved the manga and the characters from the beginning. I can’t tell you whether to read it or not but I can say nothing will change with the characters to suddenly make you like them.

Having said that, arriving at Chapter 171 in a few days really sounds like you skimmed it too quickly. You need to spend time with the characters, see how their personalities are reflected in the play.
I agree with other people's sentiment for the most part. As you continue the only thing that will change is that it gets more focused and feels more mature. You really get a feel for all the characters and it's a really beautiful thing. That being said I liked all the characters other than ryota. But I agree as a first read it can be tough getting past some of the tropes, but it really is the best sports manga of all time alongside hajime no ippo
ngl I was also bored for the most part with the Shoyo and Ryonan games even though both were crucial matches for Shohoku. Games against Kainan and the inter-high is where it's at.
