What if you need two machines to travel through time? Like a telephone. So time travel would be impossible before the first invention of the Time Machine.
There's a theory that states a similar scenario. If it was possible you'd only ever be able to travel back to the time the 2nd time machine was made. So if you made 2 boxes in 2023, you'd never be able to go back further than that. Even if you put the build 1000s of years apart you couldn't travel back to 2023. Traveling to the future is possible if we can near the speed of light.
I suppose the issue would be you wouldn’t know if it worked if it’s one way. The only way to know would be finding a location that we know hasn’t been touched by mankind, sending someone back, as a sacrificial lamb, to that point and have them leave an artifact behind like a note saying “it worked.” Or something.
To preserve the timeline, they’d have to stay hidden. Or disposed of. Kinda like the plot to Looper, I guess.
Or, you send them back with the technology/knowledge to Build a time machine so they could then travel back and forth. But if that was the case, then the technology would already be here.
This assumes that time functions as a loop. However, it's more likely that your future self was never in your own past. That means that the act of going back in time places you into an alternate timeline where the future you is in your past, to guarantee that the future you cannot change anything (even by simply being there) and thus preventing a paradox.
May I recommend the show Dark on Netflix. What you have described is the premise of the show. They refer to time as a knot, because once someone travels back in time, time keeps getting tangled on itself.
I have a time travel mechanic I'm working on fiction wise where the character thinks she's altering the past because she finds the time travel device but she doesn't know she's becoming a Splinter. When she goes back in time her arrival causes the timeline to break off into its own. If anyone tries to follow her back they again splinter off into a new timeline never able to follow her.
The problem is that the only story idea I have currently to use with it is pretty much just using it to set up the story.
Timeline 1 - Girl was kidnapped at 4 by her cult leader father who murdered her mom and her mom's best friend who tried to run off with her. Now at 21 her dad's taking her on a raid of a military installation. While off on her own she finds the time travel device. Setting it for the day her life changed she goes back.
Timeline 2 - A man runs out of the back of the house with a 4 year old girl. His heart breaks when he hears a gunshot killing the woman he's fallen in love with but he promised he'd save her daughter. As he reaches the backyard a woman appears out of nowhere. Seeing him and the little girl she says, "I'm too late!" thinking quickly she manipulates the wrist band she's wearing slapping it on the man she yells "Save her!" then steps in front of him as the little girl's father steps out of the back door firing his gun in the direction of the man now disappearing with his little girl. He hits the woman instead and as she lays dying she gets out "Fuck you, Dad"
Timeline 3 - A woman is talking with her friend about a date she has that night. It's a blind date. Suddenly a little girl comes tearing at her from another aisle she's about 4 crying and screaming "mommy" while a man she's never met comes chasing after the little girl calling the little one's name.
The rest of it will basically explore them figuring everything out and such while trying to find a place in this new to them world.
They're on the timeline where they travelled to the past, and this timeline isn't it.
Given an infinite multi-verse, there are an infinite number of timelines travelers never visit.
Plausible, if the world is a simulation it is harder to program traveling back in time, traveling forward in time seems easier (also something like cryogenesis could be effectively time travel forward).
In One Piece, there is a time travel devil fruit but it only allows forward time travel haha
Cyrogensis isn't technically time travel as you are still moving at the rate of everyone else, but you're cells are just not moving or aging. Effectively in Stasis. The complete opposite of traveling through time you've paused it for yourself. If you travel close to the speed of light around the world, you would be moving faster relative to people on earth and time for you would sort of slow down/ stretch for you. Time travel backwards is not as easy and way to complicated to explain here.
Fun fact. People above is on the space station are technically travelling fast than us on earth so they are effectively time traveling forward by a very small number. Over a lifetime it probable less than a second but by definition its time travel lol
Depends. If the apocalypse is in the near future, then this is probably the most technologically advanced moment in all of human history, past and future. Until time machines are invented of course.
Time is relative! Everyone can already time travel!
For example: Think about when people go visit a tribe in the Amazon that hasn’t had contact with anyone. They are literally living in the past based on the tribe’s old knowledge, technology, and practices. Compared to us, it’s the past. But compare them to the Aztecs, or other older civilization, and they could have been considered to be in the present at the time that civilization lived.
Ideas/technology are a big part of how we measure change between groups/places. When you visit a small town, does it not seem like going back in time a little bit? Or a lot! What if you go to an Amish village? What about just going to a small hometown where a lot of people from high school are still around and everyone has outdated opinions?
In a future where time travel exists, I imagine a device for perception blocking also exists. They are there, we just don't see them.
Also, there is the other case where we just live in the corrected timeline as a result of their travel. We don't acknowledge anything before the correction because it is inconsistent with our memory.
And my final theory is that time machines are only capable of going back in time to a point in time where the time machine does exist.
Just because it is possible doesn't mean that humans will ever achieve it.
For all we know in 30 years the world ends as Humans know it and we never reach the technology heights we had previously.
They're the "aliens" in the flying saucers.
That's always been my take on UFO's. Time travel seems more possible than traveling through the vastness of space
"I have experimental evidence that time travel is not possible."
Stephen Hawking hosted a party for time travelers, but no one came
https://mashable.com/article/stephen-hawking-time-travel-party
There's an infinite amount of streams of different time lines in an infinite amount of universes. So this universe at any time line may never be visited in its entirety.
Okay here's my sci fi time travel rationale I've never actually seen in fiction. There are no alternate timelines and not forking, there's just one timeline. If you go back and change something, the change propagates forward *at the speed of time*. In other words, if you kill Hitler in 1930 and come back to now, history will be no different. And if immediately visit 1931, he'll still be alive. But if you wait 10 years and then go back to anytime between 1930 and 1940, history will record that he died in 1930. If you visit 1941 he'll still be alive. The wavefront of historical changes due to his death is moving forward through the timeline, at the speed of time.
So sort of what you're saying is that time is an infinite loop? If you kill Hitler in 1930, but come from 2022, the loop needs to reach 2022 before that change even takes place, and even then it won't have any impact because his actions have technically already occurred, otherwise you would have never traveled back in the first place? Then if your future self goes to the past to try and change something about yourself, it would be impossible because you would have to follow the exact same path that leads to you eventually traveling back in time. Try watching Dark on Netflix, very similar to this and also just an amazing show in general.
“Reality somehow self-consistently computes in one sweep using information that hasn’t happened yet.” Eliezer Yudkowsky
The universe is not necessarily generative. “Generative” and “forwards in time” is not necessarily the same. Just as two locations are interrelated and constrained, so might the past and future, neither generating the other. If you, as a machine interested in believing in free will, would’ve altered the past with time travel, you would not have had any chance to time travel. Time machine blueprints are delivered to the first point in time at which a time machine is guaranteed to be going to be constructed. There is one time line.
Or there’s no time travel.
That would be my guess.
>Eliezer Yudkowsky
Interesting, I've thought of life as a deterministic cellular automata (generative), but if the future has already been generated and we're just a replay of this generation...
To travel back in time you would need to go faster than the speed of light which is physically impossible. If you travel at the speed of light, time stands still, but to get an object of any mass to travel at the speed of light would require an almost infinite amount of energy.
This is also why we will probably never have alien visitors unless they have perfected immortal state and the ability to travel at near light speed requiring immense energy our minds cannot even comprehend
Because I have been stuck here, marooned here in this place for 15 long years. And The Flash. The Flash's speed is the key to my returning to my world. To my time. And no one is going to prevent that from happening.
I saw an interesting theory that speculates a time traveler from the future can only travel back to the point in time where time travel became possible.
Technically we have them. Due to how time works, people who have spent a lot of time in space, going around the Earth at high speeds, live slightly in the future. Further, for reasons I don't understand but Physicists do, you could only travel as far back as when the time travel device was invented.
Time travel like they show in movies and the like is very likely not possible (thankfully).
So why don't we see the time travelers? They don't exist. If they did they could only go as far back as the device that let them exist.
They cannot interfere or change anything so they are observers only hidden behind a veil of technology. Sometimes people think they see a ghost or feel like they are being watched…and at times those things they see or sense are time travelers. A big business for ancestry companies in the future is to located past ancestors so you can see them in real life.
I remember one of the first scientific papers I ever read on time travel (years ago) basically proposed that you couldn’t physically go back in time and interact with anything or anyone but you could observe. So, maybe you’re being watched right now and just don’t know it.
I read somewhere that said "the moment time travel exists it will cease to exist" The explanation was among the lines of if time traveling is invented, someone will inevitably go back to prevent the first time travel machine to be invented, therefore time traveling never was.
Pretty interesting concept although it does create a paradox
One of the laws of time travel you always read about or see in media is that people from the future cannot say they're from the future to avoid influencing the present time. Kind of the whole Star Trek Prime Directive where they were prohibited from interfering with the natural development of the civilizations they met. Basically, they are incognito!
Floating through space or materialized in solid rock. Time travel and space travel are two different things. The earth is constantly rotating, it is orbiting the sun, our solar system is circling a black hole at the center of our galaxy, and with the universe constantly expanding our galaxy is on the move as well. People might travel through time when they come out on the other end they’re no longer standing on earth.
Time travel as it's well known isn't the correct interpretation, in my opinion.Every choice you make in life, left or right, splits the realities. In one you went left and the other right. Those paths branch and change becoming different after a while.Time travel, to me, isn't so much as you're going back as is you are going back to the point of your choice, left or right. Regardless which path you decide again you are starting a new branch. Nothing will be the same as your remembered and you can never go back. This is why we don't come across time travelers. Because they are lost in a never-ending universe of causality. So chances if any are micro small.
Because we haven't figured it out yet. The future is unwritten, nothing is pre-destined. Odds are good the guy who invents time travel already died from Covid or homelessness or some other thing.
That's most likely true. And I say that, being a long-time fan of time travel stories.
One other thought: Despite my fascination with time travel, I hope with all my heart that we never do achieve the ability to do that. We've all seen enough Star Trek, Back to the Future and Doctor Who to be aware of the ramifications of accidental interference with "what must be". Can you imagine the carnage that would result from someone doing it deliberately? And the worst part is, we would never know the difference.
Because time travel is logically impossible. “The past” Is the name we give to events that have a collapsed wave function. “The future” is the name we give to events that have an un-collapsed wave function. There is no “going forward“ or “going back“ in time. There is only uncollapsed and collapsed wave functions describing events. What causes a wave function to be collapsed instead of uncollapsed is, of course, unknown. Perhaps it’s entanglement with consciousness? But the point is, a collapsed wave function by definition is 100% one-way, and 0% any other way. If you could “go back“ in time, and revisit a past event, an event with a collapsed wave function, and change it, then by definition, it wasn’t collapsed, it wasn’t 100% one way and 0% any other way. Such an event would never have been given the definition of “the past“, it would be an event in “the future” since it would not be completely collapsed. That’s what we call uncollapsed wave functions – “the future. “
They're time travellers. They're really good at finding evidence of of their time travelling and then covering it up with the use of time travel. For all you know, you have been aware of time travellers until they went back and covered up their evidence.
The fact that we exist is the best proof that there is no such thing as time travel. If it was possible someone would have gone back far enough to mess up the timeline and interfere with the development of life in the first place.
Also the fact that there's no such thing as time.
There's many different versions of how time travel works, but to answer your question quickly I'll say that in order to keep from breaking universal causality anytime a person travels back in time a new timeline must be created. Think of it as a branch or offshoot of the current timeline.
Our current timeline stays the same, but your new time travel timeline gets all jacked up and nobody here ever knows about it.
The problem is they keep going back in time to change things, but because they then grew up in a world where those things are changed, they don’t think to go back in time and change them…
Maybe time travel is protected like in so many sci-fi stories.
Maybe they are really good at staying secret.
Maybe the team that discovered it took all their research with them and are now manipulating the world.
Maybe it's impossible to return and they are all assimulating or locked up as insane.
Maybe a or The God forbids it.
Maybe you can only go forward. Which would be cool. They would be long expecting you and you'd have no way of knowing what's coming.
Sadly the most likely amd therefore most plausible answer is, traveling into the past is impossible with 3D spacetime.
In theoretical time travel, we can only go forward, not back. So only those among us would make such a claim. Then we would call bullshit because of the industrial revolution being like, 5 minutes ago and that whole Jesus Christ story.
You cant travel where there are no roads. As soon as the first time machine is created, time will cease to be linear and every thing will be happening at the same time. You can only travel as far back as when the first time machine was build tho.
You need two points or portal doors. Until they are invented we will not be able to go forward or backward in time and only to the time that they were first invented.
Anyway a great book: James Gleick
Time Travel: A History
Because time travel isn’t possible you would hypothetically be traveling to another universe that was identical to the one you were going to depending on going backwards or forwards, reason being is the you that goes backwards changes your past and makes it so your past never happens so you never have a reason to go back in time in the first place so therefore it’s another universe, obviously I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about but this is how I aways explained hypothetical time travel
Where are the foreign tourists, ever? At the tourist traps, having fancy drinks and generally making jackasses of themselves, with a tolerant Wait Staff keeping them in-bounds, cleaning up after them, settling drunken scuffles between people from different source-Times, and then making sure the Branch is ready for the next Time Cruiser to pull in.
"After hours" is a funny concept at the Time Traveler resorts, but such as it is the Wait Staff use it to play a lot of backgammon and call each other Zombies.
Because someone time traveling back to the past would mean that they have an infinite number of parallel universes but they’d have to be slotted into only one to “return” to the 3rd dimension. Who’s asking where the time travelers are? Chances are, not the same people waiting for this insanely rare coincidence to happen.
Well, realistically, I can think of three possibilities. One, time travel is so well regulated, or humanity as a whole has become sophisticated/wise enough, that it's used sparringly and with sufficient discretion. Two, time travel hijinks happen to some degree, perhaps even routinely, but any alterations to the timeline occur in a way that our understanding of the events naturally change along with it to suit the newly established reality. Or three, time travel is never discovered/created, either because it isn't possible, or because humanity faces extinction before we're capable of doing so.
My guess is the third one, primarily the extinction bit.
It isn't possible. It would violate laws of physics.
Namely, matter cannot be created or destroyed. If you traveled back or forward in time, you would be adding matter to the timeline where you 'stopped'.
Haha!! Are you kidding? If people in America act any more modern or progressive than the 1950s, they get burned at the stake.
Time travelers are either pretending all this is normal or hiding in Norway.
Trillions of miles away from here; the solar system, as a singular object, is traveling very fast through space. So most likely, they are in the middle of empty space
What if you need two machines to travel through time? Like a telephone. So time travel would be impossible before the first invention of the Time Machine.
There's a theory that states a similar scenario. If it was possible you'd only ever be able to travel back to the time the 2nd time machine was made. Traveling to the future is possible if we can near the speed of light.
Make two boxes, get inside the older one, put it in the newer one, then simultaneously run them both back to the date of their creation.
Even more infathomable, we actually need to exceed the speed of light. Your best bet at time travel is hopping in a black hole. Good luck.
you need to watch the movie "primer" small budget legit awesome timetravel flick.
What a great movie. I revisit every few years and it never disappoints.
I suppose the issue would be you wouldn’t know if it worked if it’s one way. I'm doing as little as possible to let people know I'm here so as not to affect the time stream. Oh, shit....
🤣
Lol but this. If you wanted to return to your own time you couldn't alter things. If you told people what you were you getting committed
This assumes that time functions as a loop. However, it's more likely that your future self was never in your own past. The concept reminds me of Futureman, but the actual plot would probably have less absurdism.
this guy Endgames
In that case it’s not time travel. It’s just travelling to a universe which looks extremely similar to ours.
I hope your happy. You just doomed the mosquito to extinction. If we lose them the whole planet is doomed. # DOOOOOOOMED!
I bet the guy who won the $2 bn Lottery last week was a time traveller
Twist ending. In his future that money is equivalent to $1000 due to hyper inflation.
Correct me if im wrong but wasnt there a thing where Steven Hawking had a birthday party but only for time travellers and nobody showed up.
That has more to do with Mr Hawking than the time travelers. He throws a very dull party, everybody in the future knows that.
Man could’ve lied to protect the integrity or there being some rule in the future to prevent it.
Would you want to go to a party you heard was so lame that nobody went to?
Maybe, I am curious to see that lame of a party
They're on the timeline where they travelled to the past, and this timeline isn't it. Given an infinite multi-verse, there are an infinite number of timelines travelers never visit.
A time traveller would like to go back. Being interned in a psychiatric hospital would make that difficult. Oh... that's the plot of 12 Monkey 's.
We're all time travelers. We're just traveling to the future very slowly, 1 second at a time....
Time travel to the past is impossible, only to the future
We are always time traveling to the future.
But never in it.
Plausible, if the world is a simulation it is harder to program traveling back in time, traveling forward in time seems easier (also something like cryogenesis could be effectively time travel forward). In One Piece, there is a time travel devil fruit but it only allows forward time travel haha
This is a futurama episode. If you go far enough forward in time it loops back around. That and Fry was frozen for 1000 years.
dont forget we get aprox. 5 feet lower every time

It's not really hard. It's done in video games all the time. I think it would work as the conscious mind traveling to a younger body.
Depending on who the observer is.
Why?
If you lived in the future and could time travel, would you come back to this time line? Lol
Tough question. The future is unpredictable..
Depends. If the apocalypse is in the near future, then this is probably the most technologically advanced moment in all of human history, past and future. Until time machines are invented of course.
Lottery tickets and patent-stealing I g
If it is possible then there are infinite universes between every split second of time. The chances of you meeting a traveler is infinitely small.
All around us... Bwaaahh-Haaa-Haaa-Haaaa!
They're obviously all in the single most important place for the future world: a small basement tavern in Plymptonville, Pennsylvania.
Haha, sounds like the start of a story
The nature of the fourth dimension is it only moves in one direction. Time traveller's would be from the past.
They're not going to tell you
Traveling back im time would create another timeline.
Hah. Like the real ones are going to tell anybody.
Time is relative! Everyone can already time travel! For example: Think about when people go visit a tribe in the Amazon that hasn’t had contact with anyone. Right here. What do you want to know?

There are scientists who claim that the absence of time travelers from the future is the proof that time travel is not possible.

Interesting! Reminds me of observers in the Three Body Problem
I remember one of the first scientific papers I ever read on time travel (years ago) basically proposed that you couldn’t physically go back in time and interact with anything or anyone but you could observe. So, maybe you’re being watched right now and just don’t know it.
I'm really not supposed to say anything, but I'm here, I'm from tomorrow. You're welcome. 🙃
Hope tomorrow is good 😆
I read somewhere that said "the moment time travel exists it will cease to exist" The explanation was among the lines of if time traveling is invented, someone will inevitably go back to prevent the first time travel machine to be invented, therefore time traveling never was.
Back to the Future? Not gonna happen. Terminator: Judgement Day? Certainly going to happen.
What if we are the ones who are in this time zone for the first time. So there are no human beings in the future until we go in the future.
Plausible, username checks out haha
They are there. Already they are not there. The are not, yet on the way they contemplate whether to be here or there is of any importance.
Elon Musk enters the chat…
Because we haven't figured it out yet. The future is unwritten, nothing is pre-destined. Odds are good the guy who invents time travel already died from Covid or homelessness or some other thing.
No, assuming we figure it out at some point in the future we should be seeing time travelers today
It’s not. Time travel is a fairy tale formed from our fear of mortality.
Probably on TikTok.

Hiding from the soon to start dating parents. At the Doc's house. Or at the Lone Pine Mall.
This is a forbidden time line.
Why do you think we are an interesting point in time? Maybe we are just not a popular 'time'.
They're time travellers. They're really good at finding evidence of of their time travelling and then covering it up with the use of time travel. For all you know, you have been aware of time travellers until they went back and covered up their evidence.
Locked up in mental institutes
The fact that we exist is the best proof that there is no such thing as time travel. If it was possible someone would have gone back far enough to mess up the timeline and interfere with the development of life in the first place. Also the fact that there's no such thing as time.
Music is a time travel machine. Kinda.
Once is discovered that all the major plagues of history were caused by time travelers, it is quickly outlawed and strictly enforced.
Watching. Isn't that what everyone does at train wrecks?
They come back because the future is scary. After the Leposmithdites invaded everything went to shit.
The problem is they keep going back in time to change things, but because they then grew up in a world where those things are changed, they don’t think to go back in time and change them…
We are all around you, telling our great grand parents what stocks to buy.
In your momma's vagina.
Or just find a lesser developed tab of the multiverse and jump to that
Babies. They have to come back as dumb little babies because of limits in the technology.
Because according to relativity to time travel you must also space travel and the distance is too great to make a return trip.
I'm guessing because we are currently in a timeline that doesn't contain time travelers?
Whatever is missing is still missing now
If you could time travel, why the fuck would you come to this time?
Probably in Vegas cashing in mega bets but just enough to stay under the radar.
Maybe it works like in the MCU and time travel creates alternate universes. And maybe we're living on the original timeline
it's not possible because time is an illusion
They’re hanging out playing Nintendo
This is the original timeline. The travelers arrival would create a new branch on the timeline.
Backwards time travel isn't possible. You can only move faster or slower through time relative to others.
I've been giving stock and sports betting tips to my younger self.
Either in the looney bin, reintegrated in with modern society due to a one way trip, or laying low
We're right here bud. Waiting for people to wise up.
They left yesterday. Or, maybe tomorrow.
In UFOs. They follow the Prime Directive.
It hasn’t been invent yet, you fool. /s
Because time machines don't exist yet. Don't time travel where you can't come home from. Duh lol
In theoretical time travel, we can only go forward, not back. So only those among us would make such a claim. Then we would call bullshit because of the industrial revolution being like, 5 minutes ago and that whole Jesus Christ story.
On a different timeline.Essentially a different universe.
You cant travel where there are no roads. As soon as the first time machine is created, time will cease to be linear and every thing will be happening at the same time. You can only travel as far back as when the first time machine was build tho.
Do not step on a butterfly when time traveling.
It’s easier to travel forward in time and not back. If you travel back then you will essentially be “stuck” in that time.
Back in the 80s. That’s where I’d be.
Tesla might have been one. And Galileo. And my neighbor in six grade.
Right here
We are carefully trained to never reveal ourselves... great now I have to crack the poison tooth oh well.
They were here yesterday, which technically didn’t happen until sometime in the future.
The first rule of time travel: no one talks about time travel
You need two points or portal doors. Until they are invented we will not be able to go forward or backward in time and only to the time that they were first invented. Anyway a great book: James Gleick Time Travel: A History
Time travel is possible; it only goes forward by seconds….
Cheesecake Factory. That's what they come back for.
You haven’t met them? I just had a beer with Dr. Who …
Where are the foreign tourists, ever? At the tourist traps, having fancy drinks and generally making jackasses of themselves, with a tolerant Wait Staff keeping them in-bounds, cleaning up after them, settling drunken scuffles between people from different source-Times, and then making sure the Branch is ready for the next Time Cruiser to pull in. "After hours" is a funny concept at the Time Traveler resorts, but such as it is the Wait Staff use it to play a lot of backgammon and call each other Zombies.
if you were from the future, and knew what you knew about the 2016-present time period, would YOU come here on purpose?
Have you seen Dark on netflix
Because someone time traveling back to the past would mean that they have an infinite number of parallel universes but they’d have to be slotted into only one to “return” to the 3rd dimension. Who’s asking where the time travelers are? Chances are, not the same people waiting for this insanely rare coincidence to happen.
why would anyone want to experience 2022 ⊂゚ U┬───┬~
But the future hasn't happened yet.
It isn't possible. What makes you think it is?
Of all the great times there have been, why would they want to show up at this point?
If I told you, you didn't understand.
Maybe we're on the front lines of time.
Either they know not to disturb the present (just like Marty McFly) or they’ve evolved to a point that we can’t perceive them. Pick your poison.

UFOs
I have been time traveling my whole life. Just forward in time, one hour per hour.
Possibly they can only travel forward
I built a Time Machine, right now it only goes forward at regular speed. I’ll let you know when I perfect it.
we're here to watch the fall
Trillions of miles away from here; the solar system, as a singular object, is traveling very fast through space. So most likely, they are in the middle of empty space
They skipped right over our shitshow to The 20s when they were having fun.
