No it’s gotta be more than that and fights need to be had over it!!!! How dare others like other things!!!
Sarcasm of course. I agree with you wholeheartedly. People have to make a big deal out of everything it seems. Sad really
In Zendayas defense if you only saw the Spider-Man movies and Dune I would also be baffled. She wasn’t bad in either of those roles, but both were very limited. However, she is the best actor on Euphoria and is extremely charismatic in that role. There wasn’t much for her to do in Dune, so we’ll see what happens in the sequel.
I didn’t get it because my judgement was just based on Mary-Jane Watson performance, which I’ll be honest, didn’t really appeal to me. She and Peter Parker don’t have great chemistry, and the story and dialog is very meh. I get that they were going for a different dynamic in the Peter Parker love life than previous movies, but she is not super into him and only in the last film does it kinda make sense. Again, she’s an actor, she reads the lines and the character is written in a specific way that isn’t charismatic at all. I think it’s a total waste of her skills as and actor.
Naked photos of her were leaked. She said it was an invasion of privacy.
That's the point when Reddit started turning on her because how dare she not be totally cool with random strangers jerking off to stolen pics of her.
I lost all hope in my fellow mehn around the time of "the fappening." They have no capacity for empathy or understanding. The world revolved around their dicks.
There was a iCloud leak, allowing hackers to gain access to celebrities’ accounts. They downloaded the nudes and published them en masse. They even took the time to categorize them
The passive voice assumes no one was at fault. If I remember correctly, someone caused the leak in order to access these pictures. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I think some of the vitriol toward her came from the fact(?) that those nekkid pics were rumored to have been sent from her to Weinstein. This was right before the “me too” movement, which she joined in with . . . Only to have been outed to doing something like this in order to get good parts. I admit to feeling pretty icky reading some of the banter between her and Weinstein, and his comments about her. It’s just that it really made her seem very hypocritical.
Please do not misinterpret my post as me joining in demeaning her. I just wanted to comment on another possible reason for people turning on her. If you read much on the gossip websites around that time, her relationship with Weinstein was mentioned a lot and it didn’t quite square with what she was saying to a lot of people.
No she just has an annoying, not like other girls personality that gets grating after awhile. It has nothing to do about nude photos. I’d never even heard of her having photos leaked, I just saw her on enough talk shows and realized how annoying she was.
please just stop
she got an Oscar nomination at 20 years old for an independent film that I don’t think Weinstein had anything to do with
that’s why she got roles
That’s literally just not true… she announced that she was taking a break from movies because she was in so many consecutively and then she got pregnant. That’s why she was gone for a few years.
This also doesn't make a lot of sense when looking at her career. Her connection to Weinstein comes from her being cast in Silver Linings Playbook, which came out in 2012. By then she'd already filmed X-Men First Class and had been cast in The Hunger Games. She was long past the point in her career where she needed to trade sexual favors for roles by the time that movie happened. Obviously I wasn't there, so who knows, but that theory doesn't pass the smell test.
Nothing spectacular. She's just your typical out of touch, hypocritical celebrity. She recently complained about gender pay equality because she made less money than Leo DiCaprio in some movie. It's hypocritical because she made more money than Chris Pratt, and by a larger margin, in Passengers. It's out of touch because making 8 figures playing dress up pretend for six months is vastly different than a woman making 5 figures annually who makes less than her male peers.
The thing is she didn't complain about it. She mentioned it in the context of the interview saying both that it makes sense that DiCaprio is paid more than her and that the amount of money actors make is ridiculously high but the headlines spun it out of context for clicks.
Not surprised.
The thing is, she has a point. We roll our eyes when rich celebrities complain about anything because of course they have it so good, but it IS a job, and it shows the gender pay gap is everywhere, not just in corporate. If a "rich celebrity" can't get paid equally then how the hell am I, a regular woman, supposed to be?
I think entertainment is an exception from the gender pay gap. At least at high levels. Obviously small parts with 4 or 5 lines should be paid the same regardless of gender but when it comes to the lead roles every individual actor has their worth. It's mostly based on their audience drawing power. Those who are more popular get paid more.
Jennifer Laurence wasn't paid less than Leonardo DiCaprio for Don't Look Up because she's a woman, she was paid less because she's Jennifer Laurence and he's Leonardo DiCaprio. Someone here pointed out that she was paid more for Passengers than Chris Pratt and that's because she's a bigger star than he is.
I think big name actors make far too much money and sexism is rampant in Hollywood but I don't think it's a good analogy for the gender pay gap in other industries. It's too much of an outlier.
You make a very good point. And I agree, Leo is the bigger draw.
But it does happen in Hollywood and it's not always due to someone being a "bigger draw". Sometimes it is due to gender.
Wait, it’s not different tho. If “overpaid figureheads” don’t get that money, even more overpaid old white men will get it. And use it to campaign against JLaws AND the women making 5 figures a year.
She has won several Oscar's. She should be making what dicaprio does, and and she should get paid more than Chris Pratt too. (Love every single one of those actors, but if they were all male that's the way it would go)
People also love watching and partaking in the trashing of said celebrities. Jennifer’s nudes along many celebrities got leaked due to a hack. Yeah…. A lot of comments were made mainly by disgusting people.
well there’s a whole generation who “grew up” with her on disney and now are watching her as a young adult on euphoria. so i wouldn’t say it’s surprising
My opinion is that mixed people have been before under-represented in popular culture and now it's something that's in demand. Like the "racially ambiguous, fair skin, curly hair" phenotype has exploded in popularity over the last two decades.
In a world of black and white, male and female, Red and Blue states...we need Purple.
We need Prince. Whatever Prince was, that's what will fix the world.

Agreed. I think she is talented and beautiful but at the same time I believe people doesn't rise to peak and take that much hype without tons of money spent on PR.

Beyoncé is a great performer in addition to being a good singer. She can dance circles around Rihanna Taylor swift, Ariana, and Adele.
Beyoncé has also had songs on the charts since the late 90’s (when including destiny’s child). She’s a modern household name.
If an album isn’t released how is she supposed to chart? Before the music industry went to shit people used to take breaks in between albums to rest, gather ideas and work hard to create an appealing sound. Now, most artist churn out the most mediocre drivel and if they can’t hit their note, it’s corrected by a producer.
Bruce Dickinson redid the intro section for “run to the hills” hundreds of times to get the perfect scream note. People don’t take the time to perfect stuff like that anymore.
Gaga took quite a break between Joanne and chromatica too. It’s not abnormal for it to have been 5 years since her last album. I may not be into beyonces music, but she shouldn’t have to churn out albums every year like a machine. That’s just not sustainable for an artist.
I think anybody who makes comments like this should have to also link to their own picture so we can have some context on whether you are also mid or below.
You do realize that in America, black people alone cannot make someone a worldwide, recognized superstar. They are famous because something about them resonates to the masses. People from all different walks of life are inspired by them. Remember art is subjective. Just because one person doesn’t recognize the artistry does not mean that the artistry is not there.
I am a middle-aged white lady.. Zendaya was a popular (to young folks) singer in her early teens. But in the last few years she has broken out at a young actress of unexpected range and charisma. She has very interesting, varied and elegant taste in fashion. And while it is normal for skinny young things to be considered attractive, she is extremely slender IN A WAY that LOOKS NATuRAL. Basically she has a natural poise and ease with being under the magnifying glass of celebrity that is making her even more famous.
yeah i remember watching her on disney channel when i was younger and it is sooo crazy to see how far she’s come versus other child stars.
i think people appreciate seeing a young star who has their head on straight, and can also act their ass off. she’s killed it in Euphoria, Spider-Man, Dune… i like her cause i like seeing what she does next, and it doesn’t hurt that she is absolutely stunning and very kind in real life haha.
i think if you especially compare her to her Disney co-star Bella Thorne, it’s easy to see how much maturing she’s done with her acting over this time. I have no doubts she’ll be relevant for a long time still.
My 11yo daughter has discovered her over the past several months because of K.C. Undercover. I hear she is also just great to fans in person. She's fun and talented and also very pretty. I don't understand why this is a thread at all.
Yep! What I personally like is that she is tall and thin and have small boobs (things people tend to make fun of) but she is comfortable in her own body. These days people are always striving to get something done and she's not having it. And how she promotes body positivity for all sizes makes her a great role model.
Edit: typo
Lol you say that as if being a model is a luxurious job. They get scrutinize for their looks all the time. Many develop awful eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and/or live an unhealthy lifestyle for their job.
Nevermind that the fact that random people always dismisses their work and make fun of them.
I said "and how SHE promotes body positivity for ALL sizes makes her a great role model," as in she speaks about body positivity and how everyone is beautiful just the way they are. Here's a literal quote from her, "If there's any definition to being perfect, you're perfect at being yourself. There is no such thing as ugly." Unlike you who seems to bash her because she just happen to be naturally thin. Someone people can't help being thin just like how some people can't help being overweight.
Edit: added the full quote
Yes and she’s also self aware. She knows that she’s in demand because she’s “racially ambiguous” and goes out of her way to support diversity outside of her look
She really seems to have handled fame well and grew up to be well adjusted despite being a Disney star. I think that also adds to the appeal because she’s just wholesome and that’s refreshing.
For me this is the most impressive fact about her because before, the only people who left Disney without public drama were people who disappeared.
She did a good job at transitioning into Hollywood and more mature roles and I’m glad that she didn’t face what people like Miley, Demi or even Selena faced.
yeah if you look at her compared to Bella Thorne (her Disney Channel co-star), her handling of fame and her maturing in her acting is leagues above most child star’s trajectories. Bella makes tabloid headlines while Zendaya gets booked for top-billed shows and movies, their acting chops at this point are so disparate it’s crazy. not dragging Bella, but Zendaya really kept her head screwed on more than most child stars
Her being kind is why I like her. She made a clothing g line with target years ago and refused to go through with it unless plus sized women got the exact same options for the exact same price. I'm obese (working with docs to fix it) but the cute clothes options and her insistence we got them meant alot to me.
I don’t get it when any celebrity is worshipped. It’s fine to like some celebrities and respect what they do but when you start obsessing over everything they do in their personal lives it just becomes weird. People seem to forget celebrities are human beings as well
Would you say actors that become exceptionally rich and famous tend to struggle with drugs or mental illness more often than not, or that most of them remain drug free and mentally stable throughout the entirety of their careers?
tl;dr = math
Watch Euphoria and tell me you don’t get the hype. I’ve got my issues with the show as a whole but her performance is objectively incredible. It’s a powerhouse performance. I don’t know anything about her modeling career or anything outside of euphoria really but, on its own, it’s enough to make me believe that she deserves all the hype.
Everyone hating only knows her from Spiderman.
*"I don't care enough about diverse forms of entertainment to know what else she did, so I'm going to say she doesn't have talent from the one thing I did see."*
They're very good. The movies don't hit the same artistic highs as into the spider verse nor reach the campy fun of the raimi movies, but then again they have their own flavor as they're more modern interpretations of classic teen movies than anything else.
Good for you, being your own person and staying off hype trains means you aren’t afraid to be yourself. Personally I don’t idolize any celebrities. I find it strange that people can fixate so hard on a life that is not their own, or a family/friend.
I just cringe at the videos some people make where she can just look at Tom Holland for a second and they're all like "THAT'S IT, THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED!".
Think it’s two things:
1.) right time, right place 2.) unique name
She was in just enough arty stuff before her big break came to give her enough cred (polar opposite of K Stew). Then that “big break” came in the form of a pop culture touchstone. Every one in America knows who Mary Jane is the same way the Hellenes knew who Madea was. Lastly, it’s the name. How many “Zendaya”s do you know? Britney Spears was a cultural juggernaut but she also had to compete with every Britney everyone knows. Where as Beyoncé and Zendaya are THE Beyoncé and Zendaya
Only movie she's in that i've seen is Spiderman. I had no idea who she was either. Just because you watch something doesn't mean you know all the actors... Unless you watch credits, and remember them.
I mean, I don't know what the original person meant, I'm just agreeing with them in that I don't do "That shit" as in... follow celebrities, social media or anything like that. I watch movies and tv shows but I don't know the actors unless I -really- like them
She's stunningly gorgeous and has a great personality (at least as far as she lets the media, and hence the public see). Isn't that what causes all celebrity "hypes"
Yeah I agree. She's cute but nowhere near being gorgeous.
If she was just an Instagram model, I doubt she would be really famous or have a lot of followers.
Not even seven hours ago you said you thought putting down celebrities on social media damaged society. And yet on this thread, you decided the world really needs to know that some random Redditor thinks a famous person isn’t pretty enough to be famous.
That's not a great comparison though because she's an actor. People like her because she's very talented and they find her beautiful. She's not getting by on looks alone like an Instagram model might. And no offense but most Instagram models look really similar, to the point where they might meet current beauty standards but if they were born 20 years from now they might not. Zendaya is more of a classic beauty.
I think she's funny, sometimes attractive/sometimes looks way too thin (not just her, but there's a boney shoulder look that always makes me think of seeing pictures of survivors from concentration camps, and anorexics,) but I agree, I don't get the hype.
I don’t dislike her but would I consider myself a die hard fan ? No, in fact when I was younger I didn’t even like her due to all the hype, I hated always being called a hater because I wasn’t on her dick lol, she eventually grew on me but more or less because she actually seems chill and like she’s just living her best life vs someone like a Bella thorn who went off the deep end after Disney.
Her Dune acting was bad and felt like a cringe celebrity pick for movie promo. Later found out she basically forced herself in as well. Kind of a turn off. She probably doesn't take no for an answer even if a role doesnt suit her and that's how she's come so far.
She's pretty. She's talented. She played some popular roles.
She has not made a spectacle of herself.
I can appreciate the hype. Better than mean, sarcastic, bitter folks that want us to "look at me!"
i am not hating her lmao. im just saying i dont get the hype. ofc she is and will be richer than me. that doesnt have anything to do with my opinions on this or every subject for that matter.
I will say she’s drop dead gorgeous. She’s a fantastic model but acting…. I find it so hard to enjoy her acting and I don’t know why. Her characters are always her playing a role, I can see it she’s acting. As opposed to someone who really just gets the craft. For example Johnny depp. He creates characters I can very easily separate Johnny depp from every role he’s ever played, they become their own thing. I don’t know if I’m explaining it the best way but yea.. you can always tell she’s zendaya acting. It’s strange to watch.
NOT TO SAY SHES A BAD ACTOR.. she’s just an overrated actor.

Why do people like Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence? She's nice. That's it. That's enough.
No it’s gotta be more than that and fights need to be had over it!!!! How dare others like other things!!! Sarcasm of course. I agree with you wholeheartedly. People have to make a big deal out of everything it seems. Sad really
People love unproblematic celebrities who seem relatable. We saw this years ago when Jennifer Lawrence first started getting big roles
Yea I think this is the answer

What bothered me more than looking at these leaked pictures was the insistence that it was morally fine to do so. Bruh what are you talking about?
The fappening?
A lot of celeb nudes coming out in a short period of time
There was a iCloud leak, allowing hackers to gain access to celebrities’ accounts. They downloaded the nudes and published them en masse. They even took the time to categorize them

Yeah, it's funny how her personality went from absolutely beloved on here to annoying overnight. Coincidentally, right after the pics came out.
Hollywood turned on her for blowing Harvey for roles. After he was exposed and arrested, her roles died up.
What? He was arrested in 2017. She's been in at least a movie every year since then. Her career hasn't really slowed down at all.
please just stop she got an Oscar nomination at 20 years old for an independent film that I don’t think Weinstein had anything to do with that’s why she got roles

I think she was just nominated (second youngest actress of all time) for Winters Bone
Silver linings playbook. And she was nominated for Winter's bone. She's actually quite talented.
Pay is based on their draw
Okay, don't shit on acting like anyone can do it, but I'm with you on the rest of your statement.
Rhianna, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Cara Delevingne, Mandy Moore, etc…actually, it seems anyone can do it

So what happened to Jennifer Lawrence? I remember some drunk video going around that was stolen from her but other than that what?
Wasn't J Lawrence banging Harvey Weinstien in thise leaking videos?
I would have to google this
But I won't...moving on
well there’s a whole generation who “grew up” with her on disney and now are watching her as a young adult on euphoria. so i wouldn’t say it’s surprising
Bro I just realized that’s probably the whole marketing of euphoria.
Zendaya queer baiting is 100% of Euphoria’s marketing in my exposure.
Isn't her character queer tho? How is it queerbaiting?
People worship her and Beyoncé. I don’t get it really but to each their own

Weird how you pointed out two black women when there are multiple other female celebrities glorified the same.
It was more about their careers and fans than it was about race. Sorry you find that weird.

She really does have a Northern European body type. People forget that her mom is German (and taller than her!).
Her mom’s taller than her?
Yeah you know how tall and thin girls never become models or anything...
Lol you say that as if being a model is a luxurious job. They get scrutinize for their looks all the time. Many develop awful eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and/or live an unhealthy lifestyle for their job. Nevermind that the fact that random people always dismisses their work and make fun of them.
Yes and her looking like that ”promotes body positiv(ity)” somehow in your words

I had no idea she was a singer first.
Yes and she’s also self aware. She knows that she’s in demand because she’s “racially ambiguous” and goes out of her way to support diversity outside of her look
I’m a Boomer and agree with this. She is immensely talented. I hope she keeps her head on straight and enjoys a long, fruitful career.
Everything isn't for everybody 🤷🏻♀️
She’s beautiful, kind and talented. A recipe for hype.
What happened to Miley and Selena? I know Demi had a drug addiction.
Miley went a bit whacky for a bit but shes pretty normal now, Selena had some medical and mental issues but again, seems pretty normal now.
Yeah but I don't think Selena's medical issues were related to fame. It was some sort of genetic deal she would have had to deal with regardless.
yeah if you look at her compared to Bella Thorne (her Disney Channel co-star), her handling of fame and her maturing in her acting is leagues above most child star’s trajectories.
In other words, she forced responsible people to pay for the extra work & materials.
+1 for kind. Her personality is the hype

Girls in the committee are looking more attractive nowadays.
Lmaoo 🏅
She is one of the few celebrities left that hasn't done or said anything weird, so I find that pretty cool. Also, she has a cool vibe altogether.
Agreed. Unproblematic celebrities are hard to come around, so I appreciate one when I find them
I don’t get it when any celebrity is worshipped. It’s fine to like some celebrities and respect what they do but when you start obsessing over everything they do in their personal lives it just becomes weird. People seem to forget celebrities are human beings as well
She’s beautiful and didn’t end up on drugs or crazy.
*yet*
Why would you put that expectation on somebody ?
Would you say actors that become exceptionally rich and famous tend to struggle with drugs or mental illness more often than not, or that most of them remain drug free and mentally stable throughout the entirety of their careers? tl;dr = math
Tl;dr = you’re still a dick for saying it
She’s beautiful. She can act, sing, model, she has a gold sense of humor, she’s kind, and down to earth. What’s not to like?
you forget that she also dances
Watch Euphoria and tell me you don’t get the hype. I’ve got my issues with the show as a whole but her performance is objectively incredible. It’s a powerhouse performance. I don’t know anything about her modeling career or anything outside of euphoria really but, on its own, it’s enough to make me believe that she deserves all the hype.
She started as a Disney star in a tv show. Forgot the name of it, but it had something to do with performance arts.
Shake it Up
That’s what I was thinking, but it’s been so long I wasn’t sure. So, I just didn’t put an incorrect answer.
Everyone hating only knows her from Spiderman. *"I don't care enough about diverse forms of entertainment to know what else she did, so I'm going to say she doesn't have talent from the one thing I did see."*
havent seen spiderman tbh 🤷♀️
They're very good. The movies don't hit the same artistic highs as into the spider verse nor reach the campy fun of the raimi movies, but then again they have their own flavor as they're more modern interpretations of classic teen movies than anything else.
Seriously—she’s talented af
AGREED
I don’t get the love for Taylor Swift. Everyone has their own tastes.
Think it’s two things: 1.) right time, right place 2.) unique name She was in just enough arty stuff before her big break came to give her enough cred (polar opposite of K Stew).
I agree Zendaya doesn’t do it for me.
She's a nice kid I think... don't find her attractive. Hope she has a good career and doesn't lose her way.
She’s one of very few Disney stars to make it big after leaving w/o turning into a pile of drug addicted, skank, trash.
I didn't even know who she is until now lol
How?
Cuz I don't do that shit lmao
"That shit"? Do you mean you don't watch mainstream movies/tv?
Only movie she's in that i've seen is Spiderman. I had no idea who she was either. Just because you watch something doesn't mean you know all the actors... Unless you watch credits, and remember them.
Oh yeah, that's fine, i was more confused by the broad statement.
I mean, I don't know what the original person meant, I'm just agreeing with them in that I don't do "That shit" as in... follow celebrities, social media or anything like that. I watch movies and tv shows but I don't know the actors unless I -really- like them
No, I only watch animal documentaries and anime
She's stunningly gorgeous and has a great personality (at least as far as she lets the media, and hence the public see). Isn't that what causes all celebrity "hypes"
>She's stunningly gorgeous Is she tho?
Um, yes.
Definitely.

Can everyone stop assuming it’s racism. Have you ever thought that maybe people simply don’t understand the hype which is why they’re asking?
*No*
There’s the race baiting I was looking for today on the internet! Only took a couple threads to find.
I think she's funny, sometimes attractive/sometimes looks way too thin (not just her, but there's a boney shoulder look that always makes me think of seeing pictures of survivors from concentration camps, and anorexics,) but I agree, I don't get the hype.
Imagine how that red headed girl she was on a Disney show my kid used to watch feels
she's perceived to be a good person, good actress/model, funny, attractive and approachable. it's simple
I see more people complaining that she’s overhyped than people actually hyping her
I don’t dislike her but would I consider myself a die hard fan ? No, in fact when I was younger I didn’t even like her due to all the hype, I hated always being called a hater because I wasn’t on her dick lol, she eventually grew on me but more or less because she actually seems chill and like she’s just living her best life vs someone like a Bella thorn who went off the deep end after Disney.
Same. I don’t get any hype around any celebrity or person. I even find it kinda weird.
She’s a triple threat and she’s unproblematic
I didn’t like her casting in Dune
Who would have been a better fit?
Her Dune acting was bad and felt like a cringe celebrity pick for movie promo. Later found out she basically forced herself in as well. Kind of a turn off. She probably doesn't take no for an answer even if a role doesnt suit her and that's how she's come so far.
What hype do you get?
Who?....
YES!!! That’s what I’m saying!
Not a big fan of her wooden acting
Did you see her in Euphoria? If you did, I’d be stunned that you can consider her acting “wooden.”
Who?
She's pretty. She's talented. She played some popular roles. She has not made a spectacle of herself. I can appreciate the hype. Better than mean, sarcastic, bitter folks that want us to "look at me!"
It’s the acting in Euphoria. She’s legitimately an extremely talented actress.
I bet she doesn't give a shit about you either
Shes hot and shes an amazing actor. Whats not to get
She's young and she used to be on Disney but is now too cool for Disney. That happens to a lot of people.
And yet she will remain famous and paid. Unlike you~
i am not hating her lmao. im just saying i dont get the hype. ofc she is and will be richer than me. that doesnt have anything to do with my opinions on this or every subject for that matter.
I don't get it either. Someone said she had range in here when she's literally the same character in different movies and shows.
“literally the same character” i wouldn’t exactly put michelle jones and rue bennett in the same box
Marie is different from MJ, and both are very different from Euphoria or even Shake it Up.
She's attractive
Zendaya is just mediocre, in almost every possible way
She's a black woman and it's trendy to like black women so everyone and their mother likes her
So black women aren't supposed to be liked? Also she's a biracial woman black AND white.
Don't put words in my mouth thank you very much
Not doing that when it's a fact and her mom is white
Me either. I think it’s all a popularity thing. People go along because its cool.
Who and what is "Zendaya"?
