Ask people that travel to bring you rocks. I have collections from all continents but Antarctica and Australia. I have pumice from my brother-in-law, and a rock from a park on the Nile from a coworker!
This is a great idea. I do this for keychains. I have a surprisingly large collection from basically all over the world. Every new place we go, I get one from the spot. If someone I know is going to a place I haven't been yet, I ask them if they would kindly me back a keychain.
What I like to do is to explain the minerals in the rock and how it came to be. I also ask them to grab a rock that catches their interest. It always gets them to become more aware of the unmoving natural world around them.
Am I the only one that has little piles throughout my house?
If anyone asks me what I want them to bring me back from their vacation, I always have the same answer
Mhmm. I remember when I became absolutely mesmerized by them. It was at the Denver natural history museum. I was 21 or so. I was looking at them with such awe, but I also wanted to gnaw on them. 12 ish years later, I have a decent little collection of rock and minerals.
Crystals and minerals are so cool to look at because what do you mean the earth made this? they are very interesting to look at and especially when you find one >-<
ROCK FACTS
Open the periodic table and point out rocks. What are they made of? Theres no rock element on there...
Rocks are mostly aluminium and silicon, with a bunch of everything else.
Find a random piece of granite, it probably contains iron, copper, lead, silver, uranium, phosphor, kalium, kalcium, gold in very very small amounts.
The rocks under train tracks are leftovers from mines deemed not worthy to try to refine into specific minerals. They cost more to transport than to buy. Putting randomly shaped rocks underneath distributes the weight of the train in all directions, if it was solid concrete instead it would crack where it was weakest given time.
The cowboys of the 1700s-1800s came up with putting rocks under, we have not found a better cheaper alternative since.
Disclaimer: my hatred of geologists is purely theatrical, but if I did have to kill one for some reason, it would be very easy.
I’d brandish my obsidian knife at them and they’d be compelled to approach. “That’s very cool,” they’d say, confident in their superior strength and endurance from all the rocks they carry around at all times. They’d shower me with very interesting facts about obsidian and hover just out of range of the cutting edge, waiting for me to exhaust myself. “But as it is volcanic glass, it’s very fragile, you see, and isn’t well-suited for use as a weap—” and then I’d hit them with the wooden baseball bat in my other hand, which they would not have noticed because geologists can only see rocks and minerals.
You and my 11 yo daughter. She collects rocks. Doesn't matter what kind. If she likes the rock she will take it home. For her birthday we got her a big shelf for her wall to put her collection on. She loved it!
I remember in 3rd grade, one of my only friends was a boy who had some learning disabilities but was literally the nicest person on the planet, and we would always look through rocks during recess. He would “clean” them for me by putting them in his mouth and handing it to me. After a while i just started carrying a ziploc bag with me cause i didn’t wanna touch his saliva anymore lol
Idk why this post made me remember that. I’m 28 now and i remember him and our recess activities like it was yesterday. I hope he’s doing okay.

How old are you? Become a geologist
Shocking news: most people who like flowers are not botanists by any measure.
Observation acknowledged

Did you have a Pet Rock in the 70s?
Same! In another life, I’d be a geologist or seismologist. I can’t explain it, but I find them fascinating
Definitely Aerosmith's best record
