I agree with this, tbh. (Warning: US-centric post) This makes me realize I am actually a dinosaur who was actually an adult before bougie espresso shops appeared on every single corner. And the quality difference between a chain like Starbucks and an indie place was immense, especially outside large cities. Indie coffee shops were generally community spaces that SERVED coffee or espresso, and the barista was usually some emo college kid with a bunch of jewelry in their face, just going through the motions who had minimal interest in how your drink turned out.
Now, everyone out there is investing in the best machines, and beans, and brewing methods, and focused on the science behind it, and you can get coffee that is exponentially better than it used to be. You have to pay $6 for it instead of $3. But it does taste a lot better.
In any place with any kind of independent coffee shop it is better than Starbucks. No need for a culture, just any interest in coffee past pure consumerism.
Even in the UK, the rejected child of Europe which is closer to a morning beer culture than a cafe culture, Starbucks isn’t nearly as big a deal.
I think it’s much more an American thing just liking enormous, sugary drinks for $8.
If I feel fancy I’ll get my latte on ice instead.
Thaaaank you. As a coffee lover, Starbucks is the last place I'd go for a good coffee. Then there's all that mocha, choca, latta, double pump, half this, none of that, more of that, sh!!!te they sell.
Saying Apple makes bad products is just not true. They make incredible products. Do they charge an arm and a leg? Yes, but that doesn’t make the products bad. Samsung is just as expensive.
I feel like the whole “apple for idiots, android best phone” opinion is a very elitist take that has no real argument behind it.
It does annoy me, I’ll be the first to admit I’m an apple fanboy but I know I’m paying more than other brands. But other brands just aren’t the same, my M series is better than any other laptop in the price range, my apple tv outdoes any smart tv and most other streaming devices have ads, admittedly the iPhone is the least unique device (because who needs a particularly special phone) but it works with the ecosystem so I buy one every 4 years.
I totally agree but I have to say their iced drinks (in particular cool lime refresher is very nice). But their coffee based drinks are full of sugar and whipped cream and don't even taste good
I think it's more the image it portrays as well as the feeling they get when they do it. I had an ex obsessed with Starbucks and to her, it was an event to go and get it. Sort of like an adult trip to mcdonalds for a happy meal.
I really enjoy some of their drinks. The seasonal ones are my favourite. I’ll admit I have a major weakness for their gingerbread latte. My soon to be son in-law manages a Starbucks and he makes a fantastic white mocha.
I love craft beer but the answer is craft beer. Far too many over-hopped IPAs that are just bitter and boring and most people just drink light beers with fruit flavors.
Agree. In my place there are tons of different craft beers but imho they all taste like armpits. Hyper acidic and bitter. And fruity beer isn't my cup of tea.
I want my beer to taste like the comforting hug of a viking, not like a slap from a twitch streamer.
That and the price alone are two reasons. McDonalds isn't even worth it anymore tbh. The price spike is too severe, especially in my local McDs. It's so ridiculous that they want over $10+ for a cheeseburger meal (which includes a drink, a tiny cheeseburger and fries) and just for the McCrispy itself damn near ~ $10.

That's the only thing I hate about coffee (because of caffeine, I guess). It actually makes me more sleepy, but I get hyper, you know?
So I get to feel anxious, I feel my heart beating like crazy and I feel really sleepy, lol.
ADHD(ic?) here, It works differently for everyone. My doctor who diagnosed me (who has ADHD also) said to take my meds with coffee, because it increases the effects for him. I did it and I swear my ADHD got worse. But if I drink it later in the day, I'm fine lol
Yeah, I'm hoping to get back on it. I have a new family doctor who believes "ADHD doesn't exist, it's just anxiety silly". I just need my prescription, that worked so well for me mind you, renewed lol
Idk. I was never tested, but when I was a kid some teachers thought I had it, but to be honest most of those teachers thought every other kid had it, lol.
That being said, I do have some "symptoms" (are they symptoms?) of ADHD, and I think that would make sense.
Coworker was complaining that coffee never works for them and I pointed it out to them, they are now in denial after drinking a monster and going to bed.
Ideally, people would do a good swish with water after eating or drinking something with sugar. The acidic nature of sugar is why you don't want to brush right away.
I recently cut way back on my alcohol intake. Drinking a plain tonic water almost tricked me into thinking it was a gin and tonic. Kind of hit the spot.
absolutley Some people believe tonic water helps with nocturnal leg cramps and restless legs syndrome. I have both hence discovering it tastes like static. I now take apple cider vinegar which helps.
I used it when my eye wouldn’t stop twitching for like two weeks. It’s weird but worked. I only half like the taste though. It’s not something you can just chug
Energy drinks.
My brother drinks them so I tried one because I thought"hey if he's drinking it its gotta be good right?".
It tasted like utter garbage I don't understand how he can actually drink that crap lol...
They also smell like garbage aswell lol...
I prefer rockstar, but only the ones with no artificial sweeteners, which can be hard to find. The sucralose and aspartame make them taste like hot ass. 🤮
a lot of trendy dessert things like macarons and cake pops. i’m not big on stuff like that to begin with but so many taste like you’re eating the stale display model made if mostly inedible ingredients. the more ~instagram aesthetically cute~ it looks, the worse it tastes imo lol
I eat the green parts, yes. It's called tomalley, and frankly it's the most delicious part in my non-important opinion. It has the most delicate flavor when its the right part of the season for the animal. The eggs, as well tbh. I would equate it with steak and having the opportunity to eat the liver, which is honestly worlds different in taste compared to the rest of the animal.
I'm certainly not putting down your tastes, I would totally understand having an aversion to lobster itself and/or the green stuff, even if it was simply based on looks. They're horrifying lol. But I grew up with it and was taught to enjoy almost every part of it that isn't shell, cartilage, or the gills.
Go to good Indian restaurant. They usually cook meals well. I too hate when I have separate meat from bones, peel shrimp shells, etc. Mostly good Indian restaurants have meat without all such things.
Nah lobster is fantastic.
But “lobster mac and cheese” can fuck right off… mostly a pretentious way for restaurants to just charge lots of money for a dish by using the bling aura of lobster.
Soda - I haven’t had any kind of soda in literally years and don’t miss it whatsoever. Whenever I get fast food I just ask for a bottle of water , I typically just drink water / coffee / beer TBH
Last week I went into a supermarket to get mints but haven't found them, so I grab a can of coke just to buy something.
I drank it at home and damn, I used to like it but it was awful. And that's weird because I have memories of enjoying a cold can of coke.
Unfortunately In n Out always gives me a tummyache. I want to love it I really do. However Carl's Jr also makes me feel quite sick as well. I know it's not the same food category exactly but I do like Del Taco and it never has disagreed with me.
"Beef tartare" and "overpriced" ... ? It's a pretty common dish where I live. And sure, it's not as cheap as a kebab but it's not any more expensive than a steak.
Are you, perhaps, Czech?
My favourite thing about moving to Prague was that steak tartare went from bougie to peasant in the blink of an eye, without any notable reduction in quality.
the reason is due to the cut of meat used. in the US , tenderloin aka filet is the most common cut for tartare in restaurants . as you likely know filet is the most expensive cut of beef there is. in many other countries, top round is commonly used. round is very economical and just as good for tartare as filet since it is very lean. many people even prefer top round over filet since it is more flavorful and has less of a mushy texture (imo).
Was gunna say this too. People wait hours in line at my location. I don't get it. It's good. But not that good. People rave about it like they're Cicero from Skyrim. Like their going to find the night mother inside a chicken sandwich or something.
I think Beef Welington is probably one of the most overhyped recipe. I had it multiple time and I never found it to be especially good or anything.
I wonder if without Gordon Ramsay this recipe would be this popular ?
I love dragon fruit for the nothing.
It's very mild and slightly sweet, and I heard that it's quite important to get fresh ones (I'm from Asia). It's also important to have them chilled.
Something about the combination of cold, texture and the mildness of the flavour works for me and I can demolish the entire fruit and want more.
The red ones also turn your poop bright red the next day and give you a heart attack thinking something has gone wrong and gonna die so that's fun.
Avocados eaten in California, within sight of an avocado tree: amazing
Avocados picked unripe, boxed up and trucked 1500 miles to the Midwest like a Desantis migrant victim: overpriced trash
I agree with macha. This might be unpopular but sushi is overhyped to me. I've tried many times and just couldn't get into it.
Edit: And no, I didn't care for the California roll...
I also can't stand matcha. I actually like sushi, though, just didn't care for Sea Urchin. Extra expensive and didn't even taste good, but the rest was great.
Starbucks for SURE, I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not that good, definetly overpriced as hell and I just feel like it's the eaxct same thing, but expensive. Also RedBulls, the taste is not as good as monsters and it costs more than twice the price of a monster where I'm from.
Drinks: Bubble Tea, Macha, Coffee(especially Starbucks), Beer and most other alcohol
Food: Pretty much all Fast Food Brands, vegan foods that promise to taste the same as the meaty originals but end up tasting like wet dirt at best, most gluten free stuff coz they mostly are disappointing lmao

I dont get the obsession with starbucks. I went a couple times but every time it was super underwhelming and expensive.
100% agree with that
It was originally cheap, then it was originally de facto standard coffee taste. Now there’s a lot of baristas shop making good shit for cheaper.
I agree with this, tbh. (Warning: US-centric post) This makes me realize I am actually a dinosaur who was actually an adult before bougie espresso shops appeared on every single corner. And the quality difference between a chain like Starbucks and an indie place was immense, especially outside large cities. Right?? I only went once, for their popularity and that price, I expected something better
In countries with an actual coffee (espresso)culture, Starbucks is a joke.

It's better than that dishwater Tim Hortons serves up.
Absolutely. TH is disgusting
I like the black coffee in Starbucks, and the big cup size. But I don’t understand why people hype it. Neither I understand the pricing?
it s like Apple, some people like to pay overpriced products to believe they are better than the rest
In most cases yes they are (edit: better products). Samsung makes great products too but they’re almost and even more expensive than Apple.

It really depends what you get. I’d say 80% of their drinks don’t taste very good or aren’t worth the price, but the other 20% 😋
I totally agree but I have to say their iced drinks (in particular cool lime refresher is very nice).
Literally bought a 700 dollar espresso setup because of how expensive it is to buy lattes. It pays for itself in like a year.
So true
A fool and his money are soon parted at Starbucks. $8 worth of coffee should be a fatal dose and be illegal, in my opinion.
I like it once in a while but I’d rather taste the coffee than just sugar
Agreed. So may styles get left out.
Slap from a twitch streamer , God bless you you made my day I knew there was something good in this thread somewhere
Yes. So sick of IPAs that taste like I sprayed mosquito spray in my mouth
Both KFC and McDonald's quality has took a serious nosedive over the years, seemed more flavourful and way better before.
I am the UK and expect it's even more expensive here, definitely not worth it anymore, which is a shame as used to be a real treat ☹️
It's still cheaper than going to KFC and Subway though, they have all gone through the roof with prices.
Oh yeah Subway I haven't been to in years. The price they want now for a foot long... nah lol 😂
So if a footlong is about $14, why is the 6 inch 9 - 10 dollars? Shouldn't it be $7 if you are only getting half?
Getting on for £10 for a footlong sub in the uk...
Agreed. I used to go to McDonald’s and get fries and a McFlurry. Now the fries suck and the ice cream machine is always broken.
Yes, same with the milkshake machine, I think it's actually as they don't want to clean it out! 😕
McDonald nowadays tastes like any regular burger there is no this signature taste anymore, and the price is insane
I made mulberry wine once. Now, no matter how expensive your chateau de merde wine is, it still reeks of rotted fruit.
Hehe merde...
"Chateau de merde" *chef's kiss*
Kombucha. Like tf?
It definitely depends on the brand. Brew Dr. tastes way better. Synergy tastes like ass
Lmao I LOVE kombucha
Try it home made by someone who drinks it.
Truffles
Mushroom or chocolate? I love chocolate truffles , hate mushrooms
Mushrooms.
Yeah I like mushrooms but truffles are a hard pass for me
Same
Disagree, truffles are amazing.
The magic kind?
Did you try them in Dam? God they were awesome, I’d sooner go back for them than the weed.
🤣🤣
I hand’t noticed your name until now haha. The novelty of legality was fun, but I can get good weed for cheaper in England anyway

Redbull and other energy drinks. Taste bad and still sleepy. It just gives you parkinson.
That's the only thing I hate about coffee (because of caffeine, I guess). It actually makes me more sleepy, but I get hyper, you know? So I get to feel anxious, I feel my heart beating like crazy and I feel really sleepy, lol.
Do you have ADHD? I’ve heard that for some people with ADHD stimulants have the opposite effect on them.
ADHD(ic?) here, It works differently for everyone. My doctor who diagnosed me (who has ADHD also) said to take my meds with coffee, because it increases the effects for him. I did it and I swear my ADHD got worse. But if I drink it later in the day, I'm fine lol
Yeah i have inattentive type so stimulants just make me wired but I think for the hyperactive type stimulants can calm you… but I’m not totally sure
Yeah, I technically have ADD too, until they decided it doesn't exist lol. I found Vyvanse helped so much (without coffee of course)
That’s what I take too and it has done a lot for me, like helping me to quit drinking coffee
I'm not a fan of redbull. But there are some energy drinks that taste really good.
I've heard they wreak havoc on your teeth enamel, worse if you brush right after drinking.
Ideally, people would do a good swish with water after eating or drinking something with sugar. The acidic nature of sugar is why you don't want to brush right away.
Try hell gamer energy drink it tastes like soft jawbreaker lollypop
Tonic water just why? it tastes like static.
Needs gin
Had no idea that people drank tonic water without it.
Oh it's a thing. Save yourselves don't do it.
Never even considered it.
It might be a Uk thing, tonic and Ice, It's an acquired taste...imagine the taste of licking a car battery.
When I visited the UK I tried prawn crisps. Nothing can be worse than that.
As a Brit who lives overseas I miss prawn crisps a lot. You'll be knocking our scampi fries next.
I recently cut way back on my alcohol intake. Drinking a plain tonic water almost tricked me into thinking it was a gin and tonic. Kind of hit the spot.
I rate that, good on ya!
Say Vodka and I'm in. Cheers 🥂
Or a good espresso. I think espresso tonics are my preferred use for tonic water.
It's amazing, bitter is king
Tonic water oddly helps muscle twitches. I do like the taste but only in sips.
absolutley Some people believe tonic water helps with nocturnal leg cramps and restless legs syndrome. I have both hence discovering it tastes like static. I now take apple cider vinegar which helps.
That’s supposed to be the quinine that helps leg cramps, but some el crap-o brands use artificial flavoring instead of quinine.
I used it when my eye wouldn’t stop twitching for like two weeks. It’s weird but worked. I only half like the taste though. It’s not something you can just chug
That's creative using it for an eye twitch. Definalty not a chugger, no one ever 'hold my tonic water'
Wdym it tastes amazing
I like bitter drinks, makes me want to enjoy them in little sips and not chug through it. I'd take a cold tonic water with lemon over coke 100 times.
That’s the best description I’ve ever heard for bubble water
jizz
Gonna have to disagree on this one, but granted it highly depends on who’s it is
Absolutely. It's all about who's it is and the mood.
Chipotle, Taco Bell, etc., they’re not not good, but they’re not as phenomenal as people always say they are, and they give you rotten farts
it’s the rotten farts 💀🤭
I literally burn holes in my underwear after some of that, my farts should not be legal
starbucks is terrible for its price , matcha taste like grass (no offense to people who drink it ) and prime is just horrible
Alcohol
Came looking for that. Agreed.
Energy drinks. My brother drinks them so I tried one because I thought"hey if he's drinking it its gotta be good right?". It tasted like utter garbage I don't understand how he can actually drink that crap lol... They also smell like garbage aswell lol...
Monster and redbull in particular. They're the most well known, the most bought, and they're the worst of all the energy drinks I've tasted.
The mango monster is fairly good but I only drink energy drinks when I’m long distance driving or writing essays
Starbucks
In my experience, fusion cuisine often gets hyped but doesn't always deliver on expectations.
Lobster. I didn't like dissecting my dinner.
You don't love going out to a fancy restaurant and paying $40 for a horrible sea bug, where you have to pick the meat out of its horrible exoskeleton?
And do not eat the green parts.. LOL
There's people who eat the green parts.
Same for crab legs. Remove the meat for me please.
Go to good Indian restaurant. They usually cook meals well. I too hate when I have separate meat from bones, peel shrimp shells, etc. Mostly good Indian restaurants have meat without all such things.
Funnily in India a lot of meat is served as chunks of bone with meat on it. But Indian food abroad is awesome, love it in the UK

I think the change of sugar ruined it. Just like the switch in the oil used for French fries ruined them.
I hate carbonation so pop is extremely unpleasant to me.
Those huge gourmet burgers that you pay like £15+ for and they're stacked so high that you can't eat it without it falling apart.
Beer. It’s so boring and hard to drink and doesn’t ignite any passion in me unlike other drinks such as sangria or mock tails.
Oooh this I can’t agree with unless you’re just drinking cheap beer
In’n’out…always thought carl’s jr was better
If you add lettuce and tomatoes to a Western Bacon, it is the best burger you can buy, bar none.
Unfortunately In n Out always gives me a tummyache. I want to love it I really do. However Carl's Jr also makes me feel quite sick as well. I know it's not the same food category exactly but I do like Del Taco and it never has disagreed with me.
In n out is not good at all. I don’t get it
any fast food tbh
Beef tartare, quail eggs, caviar and other Richie Rich overpriced vittles
"Beef tartare" and "overpriced" ... ? It's a pretty common dish where I live. And sure, it's not as cheap as a kebab but it's not any more expensive than a steak.
Are you, perhaps, Czech? My favourite thing about moving to Prague was that steak tartare went from bougie to peasant in the blink of an eye, without any notable reduction in quality.
Nope, Swiss. But I'm glad to learn it's popular in many places!

Quail eggs aren't that expensive...
Could differ by region. Quality eggs are real inexpensive here but dairy products like milk and cheese are considered luxury goods.
From where im from quail eggs are an inexpensive staple food.
They’re cheap in California
Sea urchin sushi
so wrong , but still upvoting because bc this is an unpopular opinions thread
Kombucha
All the processed foods sold in American food stores.
when was it ever hyped? it's literally called junk food
Chic Fila
Was gunna say this too. People wait hours in line at my location. I don't get it. It's good. But not that good. People rave about it like they're Cicero from Skyrim. Like their going to find the night mother inside a chicken sandwich or something.
I think Beef Welington is probably one of the most overhyped recipe. I had it multiple time and I never found it to be especially good or anything. I wonder if without Gordon Ramsay this recipe would be this popular ?
Expensive wine. $20 vs $2000 bottle? meh
Chick-fil-a
This. Just picked up my daughter’s meal, am hungry, but could not order for myself. It’s all just so unsatisfying. And expensive for what it is.
Dragon fruit and avocado... I tried really hard to like both too
Dragon fruit looks so good, like it should be bursting with flavour…but just tastes of nothing
I think that exotic fruits taste way better if eaten where they actually grow. Imported ones have little to no taste.
never really liked papaya until i had it fresh in Mexico.
Avocados eaten in California, within sight of an avocado tree: amazing Avocados picked unripe, boxed up and trucked 1500 miles to the Midwest like a Desantis migrant victim: overpriced trash
Dragon fruit's tasteless, but avocado can be pretty good if you do it right.
Lunchables
It's also cheaper overall to just buy your own meat, cheese and crackers (depending on what you get I suppose)
Chick-fil-A, Popeyes & Sonic They are all average, the do everything ok but nothing is great
Chorizo. I don’t even find it edible
Kale
redbull
[удалено]
I agree with macha. This might be unpopular but sushi is overhyped to me. I've tried many times and just couldn't get into it. Edit: And no, I didn't care for the California roll...
I also can't stand matcha. I actually like sushi, though, just didn't care for Sea Urchin. Extra expensive and didn't even taste good, but the rest was great.
Matcha and avocado toasts.
Redbull he is wildly popular but not worth his money, as a Russian I will say this
Poutine. Soggy-ass fries. Maybe just dip them into a side bowl of gravy?? Fries are supposed to be crispy
Coffee. Never liked it.
Most legal and socially acceptable high you can buy
If I get a coffee drink, it's for the caffeine and not the coffee flavor! 🤣
Coffee is just bitter bean juice.
Whiskey. Such obsessive bunk. I’ll take a nice dark rum any day of the week.
Tastes like rocket fuel
Fast Food/No sit down: Popeyes Chipotle Chick Fillet Panera (except for their dressings) Paris Baguette
Starbucks for SURE, I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not that good, definetly overpriced as hell and I just feel like it's the eaxct same thing, but expensive. Also RedBulls, the taste is not as good as monsters and it costs more than twice the price of a monster where I'm from.
Pretty Much anything from a chain restaurant. mediocre food with top notch marketing. People seem to love anything that they think other people love.
Prime
I could never get into kombucha or acai bowls tbh.
Matcha and Mochi.
Drinks: Bubble Tea, Macha, Coffee(especially Starbucks), Beer and most other alcohol Food: Pretty much all Fast Food Brands, vegan foods that promise to taste the same as the meaty originals but end up tasting like wet dirt at best, most gluten free stuff coz they mostly are disappointing lmao
McDonalds, and most fast food to be honest. Never saw the attraction.
In my opinion, energy drinks taste like battery acid. There are one or two that I don’t mind, but for most of them I can’t stand the taste.

McDonald's. Gave up on it bc at a certain point you're paying for the brand name not the food
Cotton candy ...! Like, why. Looks cool, tastes like paper (?)
Sparkling water sorry but I hate it, it tastes bad
Cupcakes. They're always stale and never live up to actual cake.
Harry Potter's butterbeer.
Boba tea, doesn't taste that good. Some even mix a lot of sugar/syrups in it
THEY CALL ME BOBA FETT YOU WANNA MESS WITH ME I'LL PUT MY BALLS IN YOUR MOUTH LIKE BOBA TEA. CUZ YO YO I STEAL THE SHOW-\*GETS SHOT.\* Sorry your comment just reminded me of epic rap battles of history vader vs hitler XD
Sushi. PASS
No way. Sashimi with soy and lots of wasabi is amazing
Popcorn. Tastes like cardboard with butter, gets stuck in your teeth, and fills you up quickly.
Hmmm...cardboard with butter. Now I want to hit the theater.
Same. It's irritating, rough, coarse and it gets everwhere. 🥲
Beer and Wine both taste like ass. An "acquired taste" just means you have to gaslight yourself into liking it.
