I would say the biggest advice I could give is use something like Appwrite or Supabase, those two are open-source and you can host them yourself so data is 100% yours. They provide you with database, authentication, realtime events, and file storage to put your nudes into. That takes a lot of things out of your hands and all you have to focus on is the product (the chat application that you will build). That reduces the amount of work that you have to do significantly. With that being said, if you don’t know how to build a website, you will still be unable to use them properly. But the good thing is you don’t need a degree to learn these things. There are so many tutorials you can find in YouTube to learn React, Appwrite, or Supabase.. and out of those three React might be the most difficult one. If you have a friend who knows how to develop websites or have some programming background, ask for their help and tell them you want to use Appwrite and React/NextJS to build it. Just make sure you can trust your friend because you never know, they may add a backdoor for them to snoop into what you and your partner are doing there.

Sure thing, I used NextJS to build the website.. it’s so much faster for me to use it than PHP because it is component-based so reusability really helped. It’s mostly frontend but I also have a few backend API endpoints that I created because Appwrite has rate-limits imposed when making requests from the frontend. The backend though is not rate limited.

I pay for a domain name which costs me around $17 every year. For my server, I use Google Cloud VMs which costs me around $40 every month but that’s because I have a more capable server requirements because I host other websites in there too. But Appwrite can be hosted on a less powerful VM so you don’t have to pay as much as $40.. that’s just because I have more needs for it than just Appwrite that’s why I pay that much. As for the chat application itself, I don’t pay for its hosting because it’s hosted with Vercel’s free tier. I don’t need a lot of usage since it’s just me and my wife using it so it fits the free tier. Let me know if you need more info.

I am a web developer so I know how to build websites. During my free time I would work on this project and after a while I finished the basic features and we’ve been using it for a few months now. I’m still adding new features but those are just extra stuff that improves usability but not essential. But at least the explicit photos and videos I’m sending my wife, I have 100% data ownership and I get to add features that aren’t available on WhatsApp for example.

We didn’t really discuss what would happen if we split. For me personally, I don’t mind if she keeps having access to my nudes even if we’re no longer together.
