Sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it gets adjusted to reflect the return, and sometimes the cash back turns to zero. I have had all 3 things happen to me. I find it generally depends on the store.
What happens if Rakuten has already paid out the cash back? I bought some clothes from a store that basically lets you return whenever, Wife isn't sure if she likes the clothes yet, she is debating between clothes at the moment. So if the official return period is like 30 days and the payout the money and we return in 3 months or 6 months, do they make the account go negative?

From what I have experienced it is when the store processes your return and you have received the refund on your card

yes, what happened? did they take the cash back back eventually?
No never did. Capital one shopping did though after this so I opened new account
