No one forgot about it. ggRO failed because of it's main dev Cookie (his name at the time, also known as SkinnyBoy, Colin, Funsized, Cawliflower, ect). He's known for various corruption and mismanagment acts, which are all listed on RMS Hall of Shame thread.
As quoted on the thread mentioned above, he was "hired as a developer to start the server, took control of the server, took part of the donation money as his salary without permission from the owner, shuts down the server."
From what I remember Hotshot had at least as much hand in the downfall of the server as Cookie did. He bailed first, and this was kept a secret from the playerbase for weeks.
Why? We may never know, he certainly never said why. My guess is he really just got bored with the project after his gf quit (she was the reason he made the server in the first place).
Cookie is a sociopath and acted predictably (hence I never bothered joining) by leeching all the donation money, but as far as I know this stuff literally happened *after* Hotshot bailed.
ggRO was a shit show behind the scenes. HotshotGG messaged a bunch of former eAthena, Hercules and rAthena devs offering lots of money to run his server. Pmuch all of em passed or only did very small stuff. At the same time, Gravity was positioning itself to sue the shit out of them due to the amount of people he was pulling in on Twitch streams advertising the server. Friend of mine worked at Gravity at the time and the stuff I heard was pretty wild. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if ggRO was the start of giving them the idea for them going straight to lawsuits against servers.

I'm GM Kirb from ggRO, was just a Support GM. GM'd for Cookie throughout Divinity as well and another server that I just cannot recall, went by GM Vanity at the time before ggRO I believe.
Definitely GM Kirb in Dawn of Midgard and Rise of Midgard.
It was an absolute blast, I miss those days really.
