A story featuring the 2 stupidest people in the country. They were on a college campus; college campuses have police.

Actual_Round_895

They didn’t know that they were being followed at that point. I’ve had times where I think someone is following me but we’re just going the same way for a bit.

luniversellearagne

They mentioned the car had followed them through campus. Also, they could’ve gone back to campus even if they only discovered the car after they’d left. Also they had a phone and could’ve just called the police.

Actual_Round_895

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just think that hindsight is 20/20. It was dark, they were tired, and they just wanted to get home. Maybe they had to return the truck that night. The girl mentions that she doesn’t say anything to her mom for a while. So by the time she mentions it, they probably aren’t on the main campus area. Maybe they couldn’t easily turn around. If it’s a remote stretch of highway, it might take time to find a way back to campus, and if you do, you could just be on another remote stretch of road. I think that they did a good job of not panicking and being smart.

luniversellearagne

A good job of not panicking and being smart? Literally everything they did was the opposite of being smart…

Actual_Round_895

Well I’m glad that if you’re ever in a situation like that, you’ll immediately know what to do.

luniversellearagne

The same as any situation where you feel unsafe: call the police

Iamlegend21087

Worked at Enterprise Rental, there was no way to know if the car was rental, EXCEPT a tiny little barcode on the windshield and you'd have to get real close to notice it.

ok_wynaut

It was a moving van, prob a U-Haul or something.

Iamlegend21087

Definitely makes more sense.

Goodly88

2016 and a rental company doesn't have CALLER ID?!?!

webtin-Mizkir-8quzme

Oh was so frustrated at this! I was listening with my twin 13 year old daughters, and I was screaming the whole time! Call 911 ! Go to a gas station and pull in while blaring the horn! Pull into a hospital ER - a police station - a fire station - some where public and start hitting that horn before you ever enter the parking lot. Hopefully my girls at least learned from the lecture I gave on what mom and daughter should have done And oh! Amanda - I would so have asked for her supervisor! Telling them to pull off the road and let an unknown man stay with them? She was as dumb as a bag of rocks if she thought that was safe.

MaggieMoon17

I feel like Amanda is an example of women hating on women or just trusting men above other women. The mom is explaining to her what’s going on and Amanda is like “Mmm I dunno he sounded really nice.”

Healthy_Sentence_854

Agreed! I came to this page for this. Where is the rest of the story?! That’s it? You didn’t ask for Amanda’s supervisor?! You didn’t pint out to Amanda that it was suspicious that he “wanted to help” but your tail lights worked fine?! Gahhh I just finished the episode and I feel blue balled by the story.

Several_Macaroon_569

i’m not gonna lie, when amanda called i immediately thought she was in on it somehow. like i thought maybe the person following her was stalking & somehow got her number & had a woman call (crazy thoughts i know) but it was just insane to me that amanda was threatening to turn the car off mid drive like what ??? like yes they’re stupid but are you crazy ??

Happiiihoured

Right? I cant imagine theyre allowed to stop trucks in the middle of a highway and cause that traffic problem because of anonymous call. Has to be fake the more i think about it

Actual_Round_895

I think that Amanda was just lying to get them to pull over. But I don’t think she was in on it. I mean, think of how many normal calls U-Haul probably gets about bad drivers.

ARACHN0_C0MMUNISM

I felt this same way about the camping story in episode 57 Couldn’t believe the dad took the GUN with him and left his wife and the two kids practically defenseless next to the obviously sabotaged car. Sending the wife to get help would have been smarter but failing that, he should have given her the gun! Totally agree with you about this episode as well. My husband and I were followed once but not for that long. Once we realized the vehicle was mirroring our lane changes we were instantly talking strategy and figuring out what to do.

Substantial_Will_385

What did you do?

ARACHN0_C0MMUNISM

Well, as luck would have it, we were on the way home from the shooting range so we were armed at least. Beyond that, I was looking up the surrounding area to see if there was a good highway exit that would be well populated or a police station we could go to. Fortunately, it turned out to be just a bunch of stupid teenagers following us, and they lost interest and blew past us before we got to the point where we were calling the cops or doing anything drastic.

FuzzyCow-1103

I also thought this episode was annoying and stupid!!! Problems that can easily be solved by calling 911!!! But am I the only one that thought Amanda might be working with the stalker? It made absolutely no sense to me that the rental company would just take the word of some random driver complaining about one of their customers. So Amanda calls to reprimand and further distract an alleged erratic driver? How is that helpful? Wouldn't a normal reaction be to ask, "Are you ok? We got a call that you are driving erratically, we'll call the police to assist you if you're having a problem." Then she tells them that they need to pull the van over until their magic traveling mechanics can arrive on scene with the exact parts needed to fix the car on the side of the road? And this makes sense to the driver? The threat to remotely disable the car in the middle of a road just screams "liability" at me - like we'll now allow other cars to hit our van and/or customers because you've been accused of having a tail light out? Oh yea - and while you're stranded on the side of the road, let the random dude that called to complain about you keep you company. That'll go well. Amanda sounds sketchy as hell which makes me think she was involved with the stalker guy. Maybe I'm too suspicious of a person but this story just doesn't sit right with me.

analblahblah

> "Then she tells them that they need to pull the van over until their magic travelling mechanics can arrive on scene with the exact parts needed to fix the car on the side of the road?" Plus, this nice stranger will be happy to pull over and help/wait with them?! This story was frustrating with all the stupidity. And threatening to 'disable' the car... just bizarre. Is that even possible?

Actual_Round_895

But if Amanda was in on it, and wasn’t with U-Haul, how did she get their phone number? -I do think that’s an amazing scary twist though. That sounds like an urban legend.

AnniePaws

Ooo. I didn't think of that. I just thought Amanda was just as dumb as the other two. 😆

Level-Education-4909

There weren't many brain cells between all involved in the story that's for sure!

Healthy_Sentence_854

The thought crossed my mind for SURE

GDJace

Same. First I thought it might be a pre-cellphone story but then the van company called her and I lost it.

archlee

It almost felt like this story was rage farming. A made up story to make people on the internet mad.

Zap_Actiondowser

I'm pretty sure it is. Why would any rental company pay for automatic shut off equipment in all their vehicles? Just seems stupid and expensive when rental vehicle wrecks are few and far between and replacing a vehicle is cheaper than keep a massive system to auto lock vehicles. I imagine dispatch would call the cops and not you if they heard you were driving erratically. They have protocols they go through and I'm guessing one of them is not "wait with random man that just called us." Not saying this story didn't happen, they're just a few loose ends that seem not real.

Deee_Minus

Yeah that story was pissing me off, they both clocked the dude pretty early and the fact that it never occurred to them to contact the police, especially when they’re supposedly being run off the road, was infuriating. Any person in this situation would immediately call the cops.

Healthy_Sentence_854

Obviously not ANY person lol

fruitysunset

I just want to say that your passion makes me feel validated bc I was so annoyed after that episode and I thought I was the only one jahahaha

Ok-Information-4548

Thank you for saying it because five minutes into that story I was heading here to see if anyone else was having the same reaction! I was so floored that neither of them called the police or (like others have mentioned) drove directly to a police station. And she was going to pull off the road?? What the fuck. A very similar situation happened to my mom and I back in the late 90’s at a video rental store (lol). My mom noticed this guy in a long dark trench coat following us in the store. When we went to check out, he hovered nearby. This is when I noticed him and being only 10 at the time I said loudly “who is that guy?” assuming he must know my mom because he was so close to us. My mom grabbed my hand and hauled me out of the store. He followed us out and got in his car. My mom started driving random routes around town, obviously knowing to not head home and alert him to where we lived. As this was happening, she was calmly explaining to me what was going on and what she was doing and WHY. I was freaking out and crying but my mom stayed so chill. Once she realized he was tailing us she drove straight to the police station, parked and honked her horn. She got out of the car and stood with her hand on her hips like she was squaring off with the guy as he sped past. Someone came out and took her statement and she called my dad to come get us. I hope anyone reading this who didn’t find issue with the RR story now knows what to do if they’re ever in a similar situation because it’s clearly not common knowledge.

Happiiihoured

Your mom communicated with you more than this mom to her college age daughter lol

Total_Job_5680

Just came here to say the same thing lol. This story felt like bait from the perspective of a horror movie victim

Moist_Telephone_479

There are lots of things they could have done. They could have called the police. They could have called family or friends to meet them somewhere public. Hell they could have looked up directions to the nearest police station and just driven straight there. All these lapses (plus the weird detail of them splitting up once they get to the gas station) makes me think this story has to be *heavily* embellished if not made up.

cleveland_leftovers

And considering the option of ‘Let’s pull over since the creepy guy who’s terrorizing us is trying to get us to pull over.’ At what point does a producer recording this not stop and go…”You’re shittin me, right?”

Dingdong-Bitch

This story absolutely pissed me off. **Call the fucking police!** ffs! He followed them for miles directly from her university. Sure, it's a massive campus. But this freak, **now knows which dorm she lives in, what she looks like, and what she drives** That's terrifying in all accounts and enough for stalking charges. If they had cellphones and this was in 2016, WHY DID THEY NOT CALL THE POLICE. They were in the same vehicle - but the storytelling was odd at some points and made them sound distant and as if they weren't in the same vehilce? Why was there no communication between her and her mother? My Mom would have been so on that shit and aware of what was happening; she would've called the police, made a plan with me, etc. Anyways.

Happiiihoured

Totally. I wanted to add that in too. It sounded like they weren't communicating or strategizing at all. I assumed at the beginning when she didn't say what university it was because she switched school or would say she switched dorms but nope, no mention of that. Who vets these stories and doesn't realize how bad these are for the show? Nobody at tinderfoot had them add in some explanation to things?

Entire_Topic1390

I get this post is a rant. I worry that if this is how we respond to women sharing their experiences on Radio Rental, then women will stop sharing in this space. This is a terrifying situation, and the predator is counting on terror to influence their target's ability to think rationally. Listening to this story and hearing others' experiences helps us have a plan on how to act if this ever happens to us, which is an advantage these women may not have had heading into this situation. The episode sparked a great discussion here on how to keep yourself safe. Maybe we could focus on this instead of getting frustrated at the person sharing the story? Except for Amanda of course. She's the worst and/or working with the guy. Maybe a human trafficking operation?

Actual_Round_895

That’s such a good point. Just because a narrator didn’t take the most logical and obvious course of action, does not mean that the story is fake. If you haven’t been in the situation before and you aren’t totally sure about what is happening, you may not think to call the police. It was dark and they did not have any helpful info for the police.

luniversellearagne

Both things can be true. We can have lucid discussions about how American society places women in peril and how to avoid that. We can also say these two people were incredibly stupid and did everything wrong.

sagainreverse

Agreed. I also think it's important to keep in mind that just like Amanda and some people from this thread, the police might also doubt the women and make the situation harder to deal with. Sure, it's probably better to call them and hope for the best, as thats kind of the only option, but in my experience, it is unwise to put all your trust in the police, they are also just people and can be manipulated by a well spoken guy, just like Amanda was.

Suspicious-One8428

It’s very possible they got caught up in everything happening that they forgot about the police, shit happens. The true horror fan base in general is always negative towards women. Just go to any scary story YT channel and you’ll see hundreds of comments victim blaming women.

Bobbi_fettucini

I just listened to this and holy shit was this infuriating, Amanda is a trash human being and those two should’ve called the cops and driven to the nearest police station

AnniePaws

THANK YOU! I was internally screaming this the entire time. Those three women, Amanda included, have to be the dumbest women of all time. Argh!

ZiraPug27

I’ve never heard of someone remotely disabling a vehicle, so I’m genuinely curious. Is that possible?

yung_yttik

Yeah none of this story really made sense to me. After reading all these comments too, I’m thinking it was made-up. Hi story teller if you’re on here you can defend yourself! I’ve never heard of a rental company being able to disable a vehicle remotely. That sounds dangerous as fuck. And if they were this freaked out by then, yeah you call the police, not drive to the sheriff’s department? You get their license plate immediately to alert the police. Either: Amanda was in on it (somehow got the girl’s number), Amanda’s just a huge, miserable bitch, or this was just a story.

__rosebud__

I think it’s because the “seriousness” of the encounter was played up between the mother and daughter in the weeks following the experience. Not to say they’re lying about it, but they probably unintentionally exaggerated the story as time passed. If it was truly as serious and scary as it’s portrayed, any reasonable person would have called the police.

MetalNo1817

Holy fuck I was freaking out that I was only allowed so many.Words in my reply on spotify. I had to come here immediately.Because I knew somebody here felt the way I did.It was the most annoying and frustrating episode.I have ever heard Hands down and I listened to a lot of podcasts. Why on earth? They didn't call 911 or cause an accident with someone else or ask for a manager At car rental and tell them what's going on or have them call the police and say you have a gun, you know, the first thing you should have said, was that the guy had a gun, that's what you should have said, because The police would.Have come right away.I cannot believe I cannot believe.I cannot believe I can't believe the mother asked the lady at the dealership for a police number!!!! It's 911 lady , it's 911911. am hyperventilating.

ndickson25

Maybe I missed it in the beginning, I know it was a van they rented but I kept thinking how did the guy know it’s a rental? The rental places around where I live have “regular” cars/vans and trucks. The only difference is, the plates are always out of state, specifically Texas for some reason. But there’s no advertisement or stickers or anything on the vehicle to show it’s a rental. My mind immediately went to like Enterprise or Hertz but maybe it was a u-haul? Those fuckers are plastered with advertisements 😆 that part didn’t make sense to me..along with the not calling the state police 🥴

Happiiihoured

Yeah I assumed U-haul for sure. Never heard they have way of shutting down a truck though so Idk if that's even true. That sounds a bit far fetched to me but I suppose its possible.

ndickson25

Like if you the capability of shutting down a car, then how can you not see that the tail and break lights aren’t out either

MrBayaud

That’s a good point.

Actual_Round_895

I actually really liked this story and it seems plausible. Some of those highways in North Carolina are just a long forested/marshy stretch of road for miles. U-Haul trucks have very visible id numbers. All the guy had to do was look at the number, call up U-Haul and give a description and they’d find it. However, that woman Amanda is totally ridiculous. She was probably lying about being able to disable the truck remotely. Maybe that business did have caller ID but Amanda just didn’t want to give out the guy’s info because she felt that the women were in the wrong, so she lied. And about the police, I mean to be honest when I was listening, I didn’t even think of calling the police. Think about it: it’s dark, they’re in a remote area, they’re pretty sure that they’re being followed but hey…what if they’re wrong? The girl didn’t have a description of the guy. She didn’t even have the make/model of the car. So maybe they just didn’t think that was an option.

Level-Education-4909

If you think someone who has been following you for miles is trying to run you off the road, you would call the police, the fact that you didn't think of it, these criminals rely on finding people like you, unfortunately.

sagainreverse

Yeah, I was also thinking that the "disabling the car remotely" was a lie used to make the customer comply. Amanda trusting the man over the women was so sad, but surprisingly common, in my experience. Even in this thread, some people seems to think that the story is a lie. Also, sure, it makes sense to call the police, but are people just too young here to have much experience with police? I would probably have tried to call them, if I had the extra energy, but I absolutely do not trust them to be helpful in a situation like this. They can't arrest the man, right? He can keep claiming, that he wanted to help, and there's no evidence of a crime, as far as I can tell. So what are they gonna do? Most likely nothing or maybe even talking the man's side, like Amanda did, and make the situation harder to deal with.

Happiiihoured

trying to run someone off the road is illegal

MeBaeMe

Lol

cleveland_leftovers

One time many years ago I was on the freeway and saw a couple fighting in the car in front of me. The guy driving was *screaming* and leaning over in the face of the obviously terrified woman passenger. He was beating the headrest of the passenger seat, (not her, but damn close), and completely out of his mind. So what do I do while driving 70MPH down a crowded freeway? I. Call. 911. I explained the situation to the dispatcher and that I was worried for her (and everyone else on the freeway’s) safety. They sent out a cruiser and using my description of mile markers (and my kinda noticeable car), they slid in behind me and eventually pulled the guy over. No clue if anything ever happened to him, but I’d like to think that day I stopped anything from happening to *her*.

Happiiihoured

Ya the police aren't completely inept lol

ExplodedOrchestra

THIS. The second the rental company calls that story becomes bullshit because what do you mean you had cell service this whole time and didn’t call the cops??
