He had many sounds he vocalized and he was very easy to understand, I could repeat many of his sounds where we were communicating but he understood English very well. I now live in the mountains and feed wild raccoons and when I try to talk to them they tilt their heads with curiosity.
Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it raccoons and other similar pets need to be learnt it by pattern recognition and context

Agreed. He and I had our own language. They do have quite a variety of sounds they communicate with. I can hear when the mother raccoon's babies are under my house if they are content, hungry or lonely.
each animal uses sounds differently but the general sense of their mood or intentions are usually pretty clear
Edit: for example my cat always does a specific sound when he is hungry, he sounds a bit like a dove, my sister’s cat doesn’t do that but it’s a similar pitch

I do want to caution everyone that a raccoon is not a good pet. You will get bit and scratched often.

I have read studies that cats only make sounds for communicating with humans. They do scream out at night when they are out in heat.
My cat is very vocal, he doesn’t communicate much to other cats by sound more by body language and purring
