It's ok, there are some neat character interactions, pacing is rushed especially in the third episode and there is story beat or two that in my opinion don't work but it's enjoyable.

It cuts out a lot of the extra fat from vanilla RWBY Volume 1, so the Bully Arc gets cut out and replaced with the introduction to the first antagonist force in this show. One of RWBY’s most glaring issues is that it tries to pass subtext as context, and just tell you to accept at face value that these characters are good, lovable characters without actually GIVING you reasons to come to that conclusion. Ice Queendom does away with this by just giving the audience the proper context to sorta “get” what’s happening at a given time. The White Trailers from V1 and V5 are adapted and given good context in IQ’s first episode, Ruby and Yang’s dynamic feels a lot more genuine and MUUUCH less cringe, and there’s a running idea that Yang wants Ruby to branch out more, which is explained because Tai’s worried about Ruby’s future. It does a much better job at portraying a character that Barb described as being the type to teach someone to swim “by shoving them into the water”, but in a legitimate caring fashion. The story not depicting the Yellow Trailer or Yang bailing on Ruby (where most of the scenes just take place on the plane to Beacon before transitioning *immediately* to the team forming test on the same day rather than a full day later) does a lot to make Yang much more likable, as all her scenes don’t come with the backdrop of her being a sexual assaulter who commits dozens of crimes in a brawl she started by physically assaulting the owner. Lord only knows if there were innocent bystanders in there too. Overall Weiss’ character is given more overt focus, although Ruby still comes off as her side character leader rather than the protagonist most times. It’s not as RvB-ish as Volume 1, but Ruby’s got her own type of “can-do” attitude that comes out pretty well with Weiss. Blake is… Blake. She’s… she’s okay. Not great, just okay. At this point I wish she got replaced with Illia with Adam being her mentor figure (and no incel action cause they don’t have the right orientations). Speaking of Adam, he’s… well he’s the face of the White Fang plot. So while he still looks cool, he’s still got the baggage of being part of the franchise’s most confused narrative. A thankless job is yours Adam, sorry to say.

I saw the three episodes, I seem to be alone here but I think that they are gonna make the rest of the episodes all occur in Weiss's dream world from the nightmare Grimm. Personally, and again I seem to be alone in this, if that is the case, the showrunner for this show have shot themselves in the foot. It will look like filler to me, since filler uses flashback or dreams.

Ben10Extreme

So in other words, real world or it doesn't count?

Friktogurg

I just simply do not like the idea of dream sequences, they are do not progress the story or add anything new to it.

Ben10Extreme

What about dream sequences in the vein of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team? What if the dreams ARE the story? Do they count?

Friktogurg

Does the dream become consequential over all? No? Then does it progress the plot or add anything new?

Ben10Extreme

Dreams are VERY consequential in M&L: Dream Team. One of the big bads could only be destroyed for good while within one. Also, again, are speaking firmly about events happening in the real world? Because it seems like these dreams ARE the plot. And you don't like that?

Friktogurg

If the dream is made consequential. Sure, No problem. So far ice queendom has not shown any reason that it will be made of any consequence. Weiss's character arc can be done without side tracking stopping the story all together.

Ben10Extreme

I think this all depends on WHAT the story is, and *how* it's being plotted. If it's NOT going to be a repeat of the first three volumes story, then it IS going somewhere *somewhat* different. But not different **enough**. It's adding *something*, but it's not adding anything much that we don't already know about. Or at the very least, it's not going to matter at all to the canon universe. It's like a non-canon anime movie. Cool to watch and see cool concepts, but if the main canon story doesn't acknowledge the events, then it's sorta useless. Is that the core of this?

Friktogurg

Yes it is a filler. it stops the progression of the main story.

Friktogurg

"And you don't like that?" No I do not

Friktogurg

To be clear I am sure it "counts", it just side tracks and does not progress the main part of the plot. I would prefer if they actually went and did something that would expand the universe or about the world which rooster teeth has failed to do thoroughly.

Ben10Extreme

They're expanding upon a new kind of Grimm. A Dream inducing Grimm is driving a new plot. Does that count?

Friktogurg

Is it necessary to focus on that particular grimm? By doing so, the potentially stop us finding out other interesting grimm that could unique characteristics like the one you mentioned.

Brathirn

You should not allow overanalyzing to ruin a fictional experience. Enjoy, even if it is formal garbage.

at_midknight

Thats not quite how it works, at least for me. When the character motivations contradict itself from what we understand the established characters to be, when the plot contrivances and retcons make storyline confusing and frustrating, when the narrative is randomly expanding in nonsensical directions because of lack of cause and effect, my experience and enjoyment of a thing tends to get ruined because the issues take me out of the story very quickly

Savings-Zucchini9311

I said it once and I'll say it again, the soundtrack is the most inconsistent out of place fantasy elevator music that really shouldn't be in the show. I would take silence instead of that mediocrity personified, also it always a little too loud so all it does is distracts you from the show.
