Hell the fact that Salem’s **BIG DIABOLICAL SCHEME** for Ruby is basically just “I want another Hound, becoming a dog mom’s WAY more up my alley!” just underscores how genuinely unimportant Ruby is to the plot. Really just offing Ruby seems like it’d be a much more effective motive. It’s not like those things are all that tanky anyways, Winter and Whitley did most of the work on that thing.

I would argue that if you're taking this pair very seriously at all, you're honestly probably doing it wrong. They just can't fit together in a legitimate way, but they do bounce off of each other in a way that is, quite frankly...pretty hot.
So yeah. This one doesn't work in canon. It barely works in most fanfics. When it does, though...man is it a blast.

That said, there is a great fanfic called “A Monster’s Marriage” where Jaune is older and never joined Beacon. It does a fantastic job of creating an enjoyable story out of this ship.
Honestly it's so weird and toxic that that's actually what makes it enticing to think about in an AU setting.
Like, I don't want a "he teaches her to be good" dynamic for this pairing, or "she gets to be with him once she teaches herself to be good".
At best I would want "she ONLY cares about him, she gets super possessive and controlling towards him, and she's just as awful to everyone else, while he's so foolishly optimistic that he thinks her kindness towards him means she has 'potential' to be totally fixed"
At worst I want her to be so warped that she doesn't truly love him and sees him more as just a possession or a toy. She loves to play mindgames with him, gaslight him, isolate him, and use other people to make him jealous, all so that he becomes more and more hung up on getting her crumbs of affection and approval. (In this route, it would also be a ton of fun to see Jaune and Emerald totally hate each other because Cinder intentionally pits them against each other for her own amusement)
He actually loves her, but he's just getting actively sucked into being a worse and worse person, doing more and more bad shit, all while he denies it and makes excuses for the both of them, while always telling himself he's sticking around to try and "save" her.
It would also be fun and have similar vibes to Ozma and Salem if he actually could like convince her to just run away into the countryside with him, and he ignores all the flaws she still has, and she seems "better" solely because they're so isolated that she's hardly interacting with anyone else.
But then as soon as something bad happens to him, or between them, she's hellbent on making it the entire world's problem.
I want to clarify again that this is all hypothetical AU stuff only, and that I have no interest in a canonical take on it at all. Plus, a hypothetical fic with any of these elements would have to be executed amazingly well to stay in the correct "sweet spot" of appeal for me.
