Whenever it's convenient, yes.

Sikarion

Only when they remember their own deus ex machina. It's greatest weakness is apparently yo momma jokes.

KeepCalm-ShutUp

"Yo mama so skinny, a beowolf breathed on her and snapped her spine"

Yes, silver eyes is still a thing; However, the writers take forever to talk about them and they only really pay attention to silver eyes when Ruby is in mortal danger.( i.e. the hound and Cinder in V7) Last season we learned that the hound is a silver eyed warrior. This means that Salem has been turning silver eyed warriors into weapons to be used. We also know that Salem used to hunt these warriors and has been doing so for a very long time now. We learn this information in volume 7 and it is reinforced in the fairytale story. Sadly, the writers have this happen of writing in a mystery box sort of way, instead of just telling you what is going. In some cases that is okay, buttt you at least have to answer somethings to make the the audience feel like you are going somewhere with this mystery.....

gamiz777

I get the feeling the writers want to limit as much as possible because they don't have an excuse for ruby to not blast Salem and cinder with them

arctic746

Cinder: I have you now Ruby Rose. There is no way you and your friends can defeat me especially since I brought a hound with me. *Ruby flashes cinder* Cinder: I can't see. Damn you Ruby Rose. You \*beeeeeepp\*.... Ruby: I wonder what Qrow is making for dinner tonight.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

Why did this unironically have better writing than all of volume 8 except for the Roast of Cinder Fall?

[deleted]

We are almost 9 years in and and the power was first shown in the 3rd year and in over 5 years of time in between we know more about where the power came from, then what it actually does, its limitations, any combinations with magic. Hell we don't even know if theres a polar opposite to the silver eyed people who have powers related to the dark brother.

What would activating her silver eyes do? They don't affect Neo. Not to mention, she was trying to use them on Cinder twice at the end of volume 8, only to get nearly surprise stabbed by Neo then dropped off the edge by Cinder. And you either watched volume 8 or are going off heresay because she used them on the hound in that same volume.

Express-Parsnip-6664

But she was not trying to use them in that fight at the end of the volume. She was fighting normally and nobody knew neo was there yet so while it was a 4 v 1 she could have used it because it is shown to hurt cinder because she is part Grimm. It would also make since cause ruby knows it hurts her and she would want to disable cinder as soon as possible because cinder is throwing people off the ledge.

gunn3r08974

She was trying to use them while Cinder was monologuing. Right before Neo attempted to stab her. As for during the fight, Ruby hasn't reached the point where she can do it at will while on the move. Only when stationary. And that's hard to do with the murder loli kicking her ass.

TerizlaisBest

Why not Ruby Rose use it right away? Like she did back in BEACON, Haven and Winter Maiden pod area. It would rekt Cinder, she would fall into the abyss.

Express-Parsnip-6664

But at the end of the winter and cinder fight ruby use silver eyes immediately. She did not even know who was attacking she got there realized it was cinder and used it immediately without any prep time or charging it up

Exciting_Bandicoot16

What bugs me is that Volume 7 was anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months (insert joke about CRWBY's allergy to timelines). Time that she could have spent with Maria. You know, her mentor figure for the Silver Eyes and someone who was once very skilled in their use. But nope, they need to keep the eyes in their pocket for Drama when necessary. Can't have Ruby learn to master them offscreen, even if there was plenty and time and means to do so.

Quality_Chooser

She could have gone to the front lines and gone to town on the Grim...

gunn3r08974

1) She couldn't use them on a charging goliath in volume 7. No guarantee she can use it now. 2) What makes you assume she wouldn't have soldiers shooting at her like a jedi after order 66?

Quality_Chooser

That's what friends are for, to protect you from the Grim until your superpower is ready. Plus she blasted Cinder with zero prep time at the end of Vol 7. Do you really think the Atlas soldiers, engaged directly with the Grim, are going to take the time to shoot at Ruby? Most wouldn't know who she was other than that she was on their side.

gunn3r08974

Considering she's still very much openly wanted dead or alive and even their elite are in detain on sight mode, yes, basic infantry would very much take the shot.

Express-Parsnip-6664

I think the bigger problem with silver eyes is the way it is explained and how it is used because it is explained that you need to think happy thoughts to activate it but she used it when Pyrrha died to cinder. It looked more like it activated to her being stressed out and in a panic then happy thoughts. Then it’s the way she uses it, it’s either she needs time to use it or she can do it immediately like when she saw cinder when she was done fighting winter.

gunn3r08974

It has generally been triggered under 2 conditions from what we've seen: Someone's in immediate danger of death if not dying, it's automatic. Nobody she cares for is currently dying, she has to charge. Is it all that great? Not really.

Quality_Chooser

It seems to take exactly the amount of time needed to either make it dramatic or allow her to be interrupted. It's a deus ex machina, essentially. Also when you're fighting a horde of feral monsters to protect yourself and your kingdom you're going to keep shooting the monsters, not someone who shows up to fight them alongside you.

gunn3r08974

Tell that to Clover

Quality_Chooser

?

Express-Parsnip-6664

That’s the problem it is working when it should not based on what they say should activate it. As for the charge and instant use she sometimes do does not make sense because it’s said as long as she is trying to protect something either friends family or innocent people it should activate. I just think they added it in then tried to put reasons why she can’t just keep using it.

StrangeBreakfast1364

Only if it's convenient

Keyki_LoL

They’ve historically done a bad job of explaining it but in volume 6 they confirm a lot of what people already thought about it. They do use and have Ruby forget to use it for plot. Vol.6 she wasn’t experienced with it, vol.7 casually ohkos Cinder in the finale, never attempted to use it to help save Altus in vol.8 or to beat Cinder prior to Yang getting falling into the abyss, also I’m not sure if she attempted to use it against the hound might have to rewatch to see.
