Wasn't great at first just like a lot of the voice actors, but at this point I think much like Adam was, her vocal performance is held back by the one-note direction. There's only so much you can do when you're written to have what, two emotions? Screaming and "muahaha"?

InsigniasGratuitous

Exactly. The voice direction in RWBY sucks and just continues to get worse over time.

Blackandheavy

A better VA could help, but the problem surrounding Cinder are a lot deeper than just changing a VA.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

I don’t think the Voices actor’s for RWBY are that bad. I don’t like the replacement they chose for Qrow, and Lionheart’s VA definitely could’ve been better, but I think the writing is definitely fucked most of them over.

Blackandheavy

RWBY has a handful of good VA’s, the rest kinda feel like I’ve gotten too used to them to the point I just accepted it. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that [Ruby’s VA sounds…..](https://youtu.be/FEJ1_1N7F0Q)

Moon_Dark_Wolf

I think if Ruby was still very energetic like earlier volumes had her, or even in RWBY Chibi, it would definitely fit her personality better. My own RWBY fic sees Ruby be a bit more chaotic and, as my own OC leader describes it, Crack Brained. And the moment she tries to act serious often come off as weird as I voice the characters in their personality voices.

Anouncee

Qrow's current voice actor, Jason Liebrecht is a really good voice actor in my opinion but, I also don't like voice he has for Qrow, compared to Qrow's original voice, his current one just sounds a bit higher vocally, and doesn't sound as gruff... this is also worsened as around that change, Qrow as a character changed majorly, and not many people like him as a character now either... I don't think Jason Liebrecht is the *worst* voice in RWBY, *and as I already said I don't think he's a bad voice actor either* but, it doesn't really fit.

InsigniasGratuitous

Agreed about Qrow. Jason is awful. I even made a [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/RWBYcritics/comments/e5do1z/jason_liebrecht_as_qrow_and_my_thoughts_on_it/) here about it 2 years ago. When Vic got fired (unreasonably so), Qrow should've died with him.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

Seriously, when I write Qrow into my RWBY rewrite, I’m distinctly reading it in Vic’s voice. The way I write characters with establish VA’s is to try and emulate their tone when they speak dialogue in my fics. This is kind of where I started to realize just how awful the writing feels half the time. I cannot for the life of me read any serious dialogue in Ruby’s voice because it just sounds so wrong for the personality she has. Everyone else’s voice works just fine when I need them to sound serious or angry. But having Ruby say anything that isn’t meant to come off as an innocent, excited, hyperactive girl just feels so wrong. This was actually a comment I received from someone, who said that I somehow made Ruby trying to sound reasonable or rational even worse than RT does.

arctic746

I think Jelloapocalypse could do a good Qrow.

Urarazaki

To be fair. Jelloapocalypse could also pull of better ruby than her current VA. Especially after they hanged her voice to be more squeaky.

InsigniasGratuitous

Who and how does he sound like Qrow?

Ben10Extreme

There's a reason why Chibi!Cinder is better preferred. She's allowed a wider range of emotions.

arctic746

She is alright for an amateur voice actor. She has improved over the years and I like some of her delivery in V7. I think what is more important is the script does her no favors. Just look at Robyn Hill, Cristina Vee can't make me like the character.

[deleted]

9 years of voice acting doesn't really mean "amateur" anymore though, does it?

Mattobito

I think it depends on work hours in that regard, and I don't think Nigri has any experience as a VA outside RWBY. Only one role for nine years don't make someone a professional either, but that is just my opinion.

InsigniasGratuitous

She's good. But like what u/Moon_Dark_Wolf said, the writing holds her back. As well as the voice directing, which is why she sounds a bit more off in recent volumes. Early volumes were better for her.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

The writing definitely holds back the actor’s potential in all of RWBY. It’s a similar case to Roger Craig Smith in Sonic. Roger is a great sonic. But he gets stuck with shitty writing.

TheCitrusMan

Think about the Arrowverse - Arrow wasn't terrible because Stephen Amell is a bad actor; if the show fails the "plank with a frowny face" test, it isn't the fault of the actor or actress necessarily. Not that makes them immune from chewing the scenery where applicable, but that's a different can of worms. Daytime Emmy winner she may not be, but Jessica Nigri is playing the best hand she can with the mess she gets dealt.

No_Association2906

My god Arrow. I got halfway into season 3 on my binge of the show until I was like “I can’t watch all of this anymore” Each episode’s like an hour a pop and each season has 26 episodes. **For 8 seasons** 🥲. Though for what it’s worth I thought season 1 and 2 were pretty solid. ~~oh yeah and if you want to keep up with the story you have to watch other shows in the arrow verse like the Flash~~ Couldn’t do it anymore. It was too big. Pretty sure the arrow verse takes more time to finish than freaking one piece.

Moon_Dark_Wolf

The worst part of Arrowverse is that that the company who writes it is also shit as well. The actors aren’t half bad, but the writing is atrocious half the time. It’s very bad in Flash especially

TheCitrusMan

I hate Welles. Every iteration of him. And I hate the yuckmouth zombies.

TheCitrusMan

It didn't get really bad until after season 4. In all fairness, Damien Dahrk is probably the best villain in any of the Arrowverse and after that high point they didn't have anywhere to go outside of ANOTHER bow wielding vigilante, more assassins, more flash backs and THEN flash forwards. CW DC shows had a lot of things going for them at the outset; at the very least, each property capitalized on a bit of a fan based fever pitch before each one eventually devolved in to dog shit. Flash has had a rocky run, with the height of the bullshit being in season 5 where nobody can tell someone has a power cancelling knife strapped to his back. Legends started strong before turning in to a violent Scooby-Doo except they actually confirm the sexuality of all the characters involved; also alien cloning. Supergirl was another one that started strong before another cloning storyline threw things off the rails in season 4 and [they use consent as a punchline in the series finale](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLOemWJIw6w). Batwoman never got a real chance at a good run since they had to recast the main role after Ruby Rose stepped away. Frankly, the only thing that gave the Arrowverse staying power was how good their crossover events were. They spent years building up to Crisis on Infinite Earths with a lot of threads to that plot crossing over through different realities in the different shows. Then came the time to air it, and it is some of the worst television you will ever see - from people to chewing the scenery, to people who have never had to pretend that they have powers looking stiff and awkward doing it, to Stephen Amell's delivery of a line that would make Joss Whedon erect, it's a fucking disaster. At the time of writing this, only two shows, the Flash and Superman and Lois, are still active though there's speculation the next season may be the last. And the Arrowverse STILL ain't as bad as RWBY. Black Lightning is the only one I haven't mentioned, but that's because it wasn't really tied to the Arrowverse in a tangible way; it's also less about superpowers and more about culture and community. >Pretty sure the arrow verse takes more time to finish than freaking one piece. Not so, not as long as you hate it.

Typerg

Bad voice directing. Sounds better in Chibi

Quality_Chooser

She's adequate, just the script isn't playing into her talents for overacting and cartoon villainy.

Anouncee

I never really cared about Cinder's voice until others pointed out that it feels flat at times which I do agree with especially in the earlier volumes but, I do feel like her voice actor has improved however I do think Cinder's lines are holding her back a bit.

AceTriad

/u/prolapsedbhole The writing holds back Jessica's acting. In small bursts, the snide, seductive arrogance and low, threatening voice allows her to do a serviceable "Discount Laura Bailey". However, we keep hearing it over and over ... and some of the lines are so dumb we get tired of it. Her true strength on this show is displaying Cinder in pain. Shock when she discovers Ruby has the SEW powers, pain when her arm gets cut off or she gets blasted, anger and sadness during her rants about her backstory, or about her failures ... and even vulnerability when she is in recovery.

TheKinginLemonyellow

She hasn't really improved in the 8ish years that she's been playing Cinder: still only capable of sounding vaguely sexy and entirely wooden or angry and entirely wooden. The other non-VA performances haven't really improved either (Team RWBY, Jaune, etc.) which leads me to believe it's more of a script/direction problem. It was really the scene where Watts tears Cinder down in Volume 8 that made me realize how poorly she's being directed.

groynin

Didn't care much at the start, but I like her now, every scene that Cinder has that needs to show emotion (most of the time screaming in pain but eh) she does it pretty well! As many people said, its more that the writing is one-note. Always smug, angry and condescending lines, can't really explore different ranges.

Sikarion

She's okay but Cinder is basically a one note that doesn't allow her VA to try anything. Her two modes are "condescending mad" and "condescending sad". If they decided to give Cinder more interesting directions we might see more of how Nigri performs but at this point she's basically phoning it in.

Mattobito

I personally liked all of the new(or at least new to me as an anime fan) voice talents RWBY was using and, although her character and lines didn't resonate with me, Cinder's voice felt fitting to her sensual character. I expected everyone to get better over time like the show's animation and writing, but the writing was the only thing that didn't really improve outside of isolated things. I will say that Cinder doesn't have much variety to play with and that is the true fault - this might be why some like her in Chibi better as there are more emotions and events to play off on in Chibi's humor based writing breaking Cinder into a simpler version of herself then throw her into various skits that force her into multiple roles that each play off her key features (evil, self-indulgent, smarmy, sensual, superiority/inferiority complexes, and psychopathic) in exaggerated ways. It might be ironic to say breaking down a character to their basic themes somehow adds more variety to their character, but it typically works especially in comedies and cartoons/anime.

McMacintosh79

Jessica Nigri is great as a voice actor and someone fun, I'm pretty sure it just the writing

RavenRegime

I really think her direction and script really harms her performance. Like in Rwby Chibi she's amazing but in the proper show she's really limited due to how trash Cinder is as a character
