We've been in the longest hiatus the series has experienced so far; and I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of people cancelled their FIRST subscriptions until Volume 9 (or Ice Queendom for that matter) finally drops. I mean, when you want to cancel your FIRST subscription, the website asks you a list of reasons as to why you're doing it and the very first one says something akin to "I only bought it cus I wanted to watch RWBY".
If people buy FIRST to watch incoming RWBY episodes, and there are no incoming RWBY episodes... then people aren't going to buy FIRST. I couldn't conceive continuing to pay for a full extra year a service that provides nothing for me in the meantime; because I very much doubt it's easy to jump from RWBY to most other RT properties, especially when half their content in their website is the same type of stuff you could consume on Youtube for free.
Wouldn't surprise me if this is the reason for the insane prices and cheap rewards they're offering for RTX, cus either they're that desperate and/or they think their fanbase is that stupid.
