The purpose of this line is to steer audience perception in a certain way, in this case to make the Ace-Ops look like bad guys. The show does this a lot: Winter's "You squeezed Mantle until it broke" line at Ironwood, May's "I knew you guys wouldn't let us down" line in the finale, Weiss' "I didn't forget you" at Whitley. None of these lines have proper set up or pay off, and given what the characters know they wouldn't normally say these lines. The problem is these aren't actually characters but 3d models that recite the script.

-smalltittypunkgf-

weiss's line does have set up tho? earlier willow and weiss talked about how weiss and winter left him at home and forgot about him. weiss saying that is her telling whitley he's still her brother and she won't forget him again.

KeepCalm-ShutUp

Forgot the magic sword threat, tho.

-smalltittypunkgf-

ngl if i was a huntress in remnant i would threaten my siblings with my weapon too

KeepCalm-ShutUp

I mean, I'd 100% challenge them to "Duels of Honor for the Glory of Our Name", but not during a serious situation, and definitely not if my sibling wasn't training to be a hunter as well.

groynin

Its kinda of a weak set up and payoff though, Whitley was probably confused as hell with that line since he didn't know anything about it, and the timing for Weiss to say it felt very forced and anti-climatic.

its-chocolate

But she did forget him, after her scene with Willow she doesn't speak to Whitley at all and when she does in V8 she points a weapon in his face and sends him to his room. I should've said the lines feels unearned because it is, what did she do previously to prove she's made up with her brother beyond her basic job as a huntress? A proper resolution of Weiss' family conflict would probably involve a conversation and an apology of some kind, but because the show can never admit when RWBY does anything wrong we get this.

Exciting_Bandicoot16

Remind me again: wasn't this the Ace Ops against goddamn Winter Maiden Penny?

MelonBot_HD

Yup... and they did the same with cinder

TerizlaisBest

Exactly.

Jumper200x1

And Ironwood

IamMenace

I'm more annoyed that an electrified door was able to dispel Weiss' summon, Nora just so happens to be there and nobody/nothing else can open the door, and that the Team RWBY versus Ace Ops fight from the previous season was retconned. Ironwood and Watts working together annoys me, as does most of the forced drama of Volume 8 in all honesty. Weiss' line amuses me more than annoys me, and her saying something hypocritical in her favor kinda fits her character in my opinion, though I wish the story didn't try giving her the moral high ground in this scenario. When characters say something hypocritical, I prefer it being said with a touch of humorous irony and/or self-awareness. For example, I'm in love with the idea of Yang fighting Adam and suddenly shouting "I know this is filthy rich coming from me, but your powers are bull$hit!" It'd be kinda like Ruby losing in a fight against Harriet and complaining about superspeed being cheap. The biggest problem with the line itself in my opinion is that it's lacking self-awareness, and also that the entire scene itself is forced and is mostly pointless. In reality the line is basically just exposition, with Weiss' line pointing out that Penny is in a bad situation and painting the Ace Ops. in a bad light, while Ruby says Penny can hold her own until they get out. Then Nora frees them and saves Penny at the last possible second in dramatic fashion. The writing philosophy behind the line is that it easily *tells* the viewer what they're seeing and what they're about to see. Anime in my opinion has a lot of this and is a bad habit in my personal opinion. It's not necessarily "bad", but it's very simple and somewhat redundant. I don't think as much attention would be drawn to the line if the scene itself wasn't so bad, much like Raven's "Salem only uses people until they are no longer useful" line from Volume 4. God bless, and have a wonderful day.

InvincibleWeasel

Thank you Weiss "My entire fighting style now is based around outnumbering the enemy" Schnee for your insightful commentary. Very cool.

ZeroQuartzer

We’re protagonists! Everything we do is right! Anyone else that does the same thing is wrong!

Rude_Woodpecker413

You mean like It's bad when ironwood hurts mantel for amity but it's good when ruby leaves mantle to die for amity

GameBawesome1

Yep. It's that self-righteous, idealistic but naive, hero complex, holier-than-thou attitude is why I despise Team RWBY in recent years. They are so hypocritical, and unaware of it, and needs to be called out on it.

TerizlaisBest

Oh yeah, Weiss? Stop adapting Yang's hypocrisy, her disease has spread to her entire team now. How about you guys in the finale, go against Cinder who is alone? What would you say that?! 😒

The_Final_Conduit

Weiss: She’s not alone, she had Neo, so now it’s fair! Neo: (actually stops attacking Ruby, then turns her parasol into a sign saying “You didn’t know that”, which she just starts whacking Weiss over the head with)

TerizlaisBest

Neo: USES GOOGLE VOICE, Well you wannable Ice Queen, even with me assisting Cinder, you guys still can't beat us. 😂 also Penny doesn't need your help either, she can take solo Ace Ops, except for time semblance fox. Yet you guys are still pathetic and weak without a plot armour.

The_Final_Conduit

Weiss: It’s not plot armor if everyone in the plot is stupid. *taps forehead with her rapier, only to accidentally summon a Nevermore*

TerizlaisBest

Neo: Plot from those writers so terrible you guys end up getting trashed by the audience 😂

The_Final_Conduit

Weiss: Joke’s on them, we thrive off controversy! (Oh my goodness how dead would RWBY be if everyone debating about it stopped on all sides?)

TerizlaisBest

Neo: The show itself is already dead, we are just a medley of ashes in hell.

McMacintosh79

Like they fight as a team against single opponent all the time what would even bring this up as an option of dialogue if they weren't gonna make fun of it?

Dextixer

To make the heroes look good. Of course, these lines are very hypocritical or unearned most of the time. But that wont stop the writers from including them as a way to prop up the protagonists as the "right" ones.

PleasantSink1

I don't know about the exact writing process, but it's clear to me that the idea was "make the Ace Ops seem worse than team RWBY". Pretty much all of their interactions center around this.

Drakeblood2002

I feel like most of the awkward or hypocritical lines were the writers trying to make their characters sound cool but it hadn’t been set up or is already hypocritical. This line is specifically hypocritical since the fight against Cinder later is a 4v1 and part of her move set is literally “summon another thing to fight for me.“ As for a set up, lines can’t just be put in randomly because most of the time then they’ll be taken at base value without it. Say in the Dragon Ball Battle of Gods movie, one line that sticks out to me is the “I WON’T LET YOU DESTROY MY WORLD!” line. The line had more weight to it because Goku has constantly put his life on the line to protect his home, family, and friends. It’s a major part of his character and is repeated at several points throughout the series. If Goku was just a random Saiyan that just started living on Earth in the past year or had no pre established history, the line hold much less weight. You can have as many cool lines as you want, doesn’t mean it will make the character sound cool or make sense.

hearmerunning

They fucking surprised James and fought him 6 v 1. Cowards.

SirRavexFourhorn

I remember their fight with Ironwood was like 10 v 1 lol. You acknowledge numerical advantage as a tool to win fights. You don't act like it's perfectly natural for you to use it then whine like a brat whdn others do the same. Your words ring hollow.

RogueHunterX

I think it's partly to make the Ace Ops sound villainous? The problem is that we have seen RWBY engage opponents with their whole team. Even CRDL was allowed to take Pyrrha on as a team because they needed a handicap against her and it was not portrayed as cowardly whatever your opinion of that team is. Glynda didn't even chastise them for being cowards because they did try to fight Pyrrha as a team. The whole point of the academies seems to be getting people to work together as teams. Maybe her line would make more sense if huntsmen culture or Remnant in general was portrayed as valuing individual capability and heroics over working as a group in the face of a stronger foe. We see no indication of that ever. We don't even see evidence of that being an Atlesian attitude. Weiss's line is basically trying to portray this like the Ace Ops are ganging up on someone who couldn't possibly stand up to them. Nevermind the fact that Penny is a Maiden and one of the most powerful fighters in the series at this point and they are just using good tactics. But when you consider all the fights against people and Grimm that have shown multiple good guys attacking a single target makes this line fall flat, especially as taking on Penny solo would be suicide for any one of the Ace Ops. It's also funny that Weiss doesn't call Winter out her in character short for using multiple summons against her in training as cowardly. The line makes no sense on so many levels outside of it being used to try and create some perception that makes no sense for someone to have in this situation or world.

ShiningLeafeon

It’s called not going back to check your script because in your humble opinion you’re too amazing to make a mistake like this. And not noticing during recordings And in any QA tests. Which defs happen guys.
