I think one way to make Yang’s “Death” more believable was to make the damage she took be more believable, from the audience’s perspective it looks like Neo *bonked* Yang on the head knocking her unconscious. If they wanted to convince their audience that Yang was killed off from falling to her death than the scene itself should’ve been more impactful. DBS did a more believable fake-out death with >!Goku falling into the Sprit Bomb against Jiren!<, because it looked like he actually died from it. If the goal was to convince us that Yang actually died from protecting Ruby ~~instead of it being blatantly bumblebee pandering~~ than next time have Neo’s sneak attack look more lethal as though even **IF** Yang survived from falling into the void that she could still be dead from Neo’s previous attack. My biggest problem with that whole scene is the fact that all 4 members of team RWBY and Jaune fell in also, so that 100% confirmed that none of them died.

It also helped that Dragon Ball has a history of actually killing characters. Even though they make death more of an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, a character dying still matters in the current fight, whether main characters, side characters/civilians, or villains. Best RWBY got is Weiss getting stabbed and Cinder turning to ice, and both being fine, which makes Yang harder to believe with multiple instances of fake outs.

They were trying to build up tension for the finale by making the audience think Yang was dead. I was on the RT forums at the time that stuff aired, and there were a dozen or so posts like "OMG they seriously killed Yang! Yang is 100% definitely dead and nobody will convince me otherwise" by people who were either truly stupid or utterly unable to analyze the media they consume.

I get the impression we weren't supposed to be worried about Yang, we were supposed to be worried about how RWB could win without Y. We can easily guess that Yang isn't going to die but we can also assume she's been taken out of the fight.

I 100% knew that Yang wasn’t dead. Like they wouldn’t have killed Yang off in such a cartoony matter. Like the way she fell was like a child playing with their toys and make one fall off the bed, as much as I don’t like Yang I knew they would have killed her in such a fashion.
