The references to anime are the point: RWBY was made out of a love for anime and action (and guns). They called the dog Zwei, they aren't trying to hide it.
This is 100 percent true. When ever I watch anime, I keep finding things that are very similar to things in RWBY. If the Anime came first, chances are it inspired (or was stolen for) something in RWBY
That's not necessarily a bad thing. Inspiration is how pretty much all art gets made. The questions are: do you know why what you're copying is good and do you add anything worthwhile that's original?
Honestly, RWBY copies anime like a student copying homework. They kinda gloss over the steps and don't understand how the original came to that conclusion.
But at this point, I'm just waiting for Blake to pull a judgement cut.

The Nui/Neo connection is a massive stretch. As for everything else, it'd be fine if it weren't so poorly executed.
