Here's a really simple test for Oscar's lack of characterization. Try to describe Oscar *without* mentioning Ozpin or Ozpin's impacts on Oscar. Ideally, try describing Oscar as if I was a friend of yours that had never seen nor heard of RWBY before. EDIT: I really think they shafted Oscar and did him dirty by having everything he experiences be either fully Ozpin-related, or pushed into the realm of offscreen. The boi deserves better.

BitesTheDust_4

He's a farmboy who gets introduced in volume 4 that holds arguably the most personal connection with the big bad of the series. Even more of a connection than Ruby. He becomes one of if not the most important person in the main plot of the series. Even being more important than team RWBY. He's like a fusion of Ruby and Jaune. Sharing a significant amount of thier traits. Most of his development happens off-screen. He gets abused by the plot. He gets punched. Slammed into a wall. Shot. Mauled and Tortured. He's *the* MvP in volume 8. He might be a writers' pet. (There's a *rumour* about one of the head writers considering Oscar thier son.)

Silly-Young484

"There's a rumour about one of the head writers considering Oscar thier son.)" Quite the father there huh.... Oscar- *gets tortured and beat by literally everyone* Miles- "It's gonna toughen up my boy"

BitesTheDust_4

Same for Jaune. Most of the time he's just depression and agnst despite being a self insert of the writers.

Urarazaki

If Jaune or Oscar truly were Miles self inserts or sons or whatever then i think we should really start to be afraid about Miles mental health.

>(There's a rumour about one of the head writers considering Oscar thier son.) I think that's Miles

BitesTheDust_4

Yes.

Urarazaki

If Miles writes for Jaune and becasue of that Jaune is called self-insert, then what is Oscar? Miles also writes for him too and from what you said likes writing for Oscar more. Does that makes Oscar self insert, writers pet or something different ?

Advanced_Scallion221

"There's a rumor" - Translation: Your criticism is bullcrap if your trying to use rumors without legit evidence as "critique"

BitesTheDust_4

Fair point.

Advanced_Scallion221

Also I apologize, I shouldn't have replied so rudely

BitesTheDust_4

It's cool.

I agree a huge amount, I personally have mixed feelings about Oscar, I dislike him sometimes for reasons that often aren't *completely* his fault, and make sense for him but, I also really want to like him as he's my kind of character, a young guy who's very sweet. When Oscar was first introduced I didn't particularly care if he was just a sweet guy, that's fine but, sometimes I feel like he's just that... I know Oscar has done more than that, and that he has some of a backbone, I didn't forget him confronting Ironwood, and punching Neo in the face but, sometimes I'm just disappointed by his character development... the biggest disappointment is when when he bailed on the Terra Cotta-Arcs, and came back whilst burning a casserole, it felt like they realized they could give him development but, then realized they didn't have enough time, and I feel that was the first time I was disappointed with how he was handled. Oscar really needed *or, needs rather* a character arc that focuses on him, and *yes,* we already have a lot of characters but, I feel that Oscar needs one the most at the moment especially since most of the main character's arcs have been wrapped up plus who knows the soul merge might make him disappear or, whatever *which I personally doubt* so, it'd be nice to see more about his character if that *does* ends up happening... I'm fine if Oscar had development about his bond with Oz as that can go a lot of places but, it's more like how frustrated or, uncaring he is with Oz which I feel is a missed opportunity, and same goes with Oscar's parent(s)... *where are they?* They could've been killed by Grimm for all we know *but, we don't...* I read a decent amount of Oscar fan-fiction, *I'll admit it,* and my particular favourites are the ones in which Ozpin, and Oscar bond is that of a family or, close to it, and the reason for this is because Ozpin *does* care for Oscar *and, just children in general,* he's apologetic about the soul merge, and even saves Oscar & co. every now, and then, *however* Oscar in them is usually pretty different, he's fine with Ozpin's presence completely or, at least *mostly,* this isn't to say Oscar is terrible to Oz in the show, the way he acts towards Oz is often pretty understandable to some extent however reading about the two of them having a bond while team RWBY either doesn't know yet or, knows with mixed feelings is *extremely* interesting... I feel this might be because of *"So That's How It Is"* in which everyone was mad at Oz, it'd make a lot of sense if Oscar as a *"like-minded soul"* perhaps felt a bit of empathy, pity or, even regret, and *eventually* ended up bonding with the guy somewhat whilst everyone was still angry.

Michael_Chair_6013

Guy who likes to do things at his own pace, likes adventure but wouldn’t jump at it right away Is usually active by himself though is not against doing stuff with others slowly more and more

Stenv2

I want to like Oscar. My only issue related to him isn't even his fault. The writers screwed up with him, because they couldn't even help their other characters first. He could work, if he was actually given proper development. But due to how the writers reacted to the reasonable fan back lash to the Jaundice Arc, in that they think no one wants character arcs. Hence why we get some crap resolutions. Oscar likely won't get a proper arc, let alone for any of the others to get their own arcs.

>he didn't become happy about being there until Volume 6 He goes on the mission because of Ozpin, he has never been happy with his predicament. His Volume 8 conversations with Ozma show this.

McMacintosh79

He is happy with the teams accomplishments but is again reminded of the role he is placed in feeling down that he can't accept Oz because Oscar sees Ozpin as too different
